  • Colloidal processing of Al2O3-based composites reinforced with TiN and TiC particulates, whiskers and nanoparticles
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 21:8, s. 1027-1035
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A colloidal processing route has been developed for the preparation of dense and homogeneous Al2O3–TiN/TiC composites. The dispersion and rheological properties of mixtures of TiN or TiC particulates and Al2O3 particles were investigated using electrokinetics and steady-shear rheology. We found that well-dispersed aqueous suspensions with low viscosity could be prepared by adding a poly(acrylic acid) dispersant and controlling pH in the alkaline range. This processing scheme was also suitable for preparation of whisker and nanoparticle composite suspensions. The alumina-based composite suspensions with a secondary-phase concentration of 25 vol.% were freeze-granulated and hot-pressed, and the resulting bodies were fully densified with well-dispersed secondary phases. Homogeneous Al2O3–TiN nanoparticle composites could only be prepared with additions of up to 5 vol.% nanoparticles; higher additions resulted in agglomeration and subsequent grain growth of the nanoparticles.

  • Intranätboken : från elektronisk anslagstavla till dagligt arbetsverktyg
  • 2002

  • Novel biochemical markers of psychosocial stress in women.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PloS one. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Prolonged psychosocial stress is a condition assessed through self-reports. Here we aimed to identify biochemical markers for screening and early intervention in women. METHODS: Plasma concentrations of interleukin (IL) 1-alpha, IL1-beta, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, interferon-gamma (INF-gamma), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), epidermal growth factor (EGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), total tri-iodothyronine (TT3), total thyroxine (TT4), prolactin, and testosterone were measured in: 195 women on long-term sick-leave for a stress-related affective disorder, 45 women at risk for professional burnout, and 84 healthy women. RESULTS: We found significantly increased levels of MCP-1, VEGF and EGF in women exposed to prolonged psychosocial stress. Statistical analysis indicates that they independently associate with a significant risk for being classified as ill. CONCLUSIONS: MCP-1, EGF, and VEGF are potential markers for screening and early intervention in women under prolonged psychosocial stress.

  • Influence of graphite contamination on the optical properties of transparent spinel obtained by spark plasma sintering
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scripta Materialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-6462 .- 1872-8456. ; 60:3, s. 164-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The optical properties of transparent spinel sintered by spark plasma sintering have been investigated for incident electromagnetic radiations with wavelengths in the range 0.2-2 mu m. It is shown that residual porosities and second-phase graphite particles have a strong influence on the in-line transmittance. Because of the graphite particles, the in-line transmittance measured does not approach that of monocrystalline spinel for wavelengths above 1 mu m.

  • Phenomenological analysis of densification mechanism during spark plasma sintering of MgAl2O4
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Research. - 0884-2914 .- 2044-5326. ; 24:6, s. 2011-2020
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spark plasma sintering (SPS) of MgAl2O4 powder was investigated at temperatures between 1200 and 1300 degrees C. A significant grain growth was observed during densification. The densification rate always exhibits at least one strong minimum, and resumes after an incubation period. Transmission electron microscopy investigations performed on sintered samples never revealed extensive dislocation activity in the elemental grains. The densification mechanism involved during SPS was determined by anisothermal (investigation of the heating stage of a SPS run) and isothermal methods (investigation at given soak temperatures). Grain-boundary sliding, accommodated by an in-series {interface-reaction/lattice diffusion of the O-2(-) anions} mechanism controlled by the interface-reaction step, governs densification. The zero-densification-rate period, detected for all soak temperatures, arise from the difficulty of annealing vacancies, necessary for the densification to proceed. The detection of atomic ledges at grain boundaries and the modification of the stoichiometry of spinel during SPS could be related to the difficulty to anneal vacancies at temperature soaks.

  • Thermal Properties of Nitrogen-Rich Ca-α-Sialons
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : Elsevier BV. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 29:16, s. 3409-3417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nitrogen-rich Ca-α-Sialon (CaxSi12−2xAl2xN16 with x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8, 1.2 and 1.6) ceramics were prepared from the mixtures of Si3N4, AlN and CaH2 powders in a hot press at 1800 °C using a pressure of 35 MPa and a holding time of 4 h, and then were investigated with respect to reaction mechanism, phase stability and oxidation resistance. In addition the sample with x = 1.6 was prepared in the temperature range 600–1800 °C using a pressure of 35 MPa and a holding time of 2 h. The α-Sialon phase was first observed at 1400 °C but the α-Si3N4 and AlN phases were still present at 1700 °C. Phase pure Ca-α-Sialon ceramics could not be obtained until the sintering temperature reached 1800 °C. The phase pure nitrogen-rich Ca-α-Sialon exhibited no phase transformation in the temperature range 1400–1600 °C. In general, mixed α/β-Sialon showed better oxidation resistance than pure α-Sialon in the low temperature range (1250–1325 °C), while α-Sialons with compositions located at α/β-Sialon border-line showed significant weight gains over the entire temperature range tested (1250–1400 °C). The phases formed upon oxidation were characterized by X-ray, SEM and TEM studies.

  • Densification and properties of zirconia prepared by three different sintering techniques
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Ceramics International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0272-8842 .- 1873-3956. ; 33:8, s. 1603-1610
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Densification of nanocrystalline yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powder with 8 mol% Y2O3, prepared by a glycine/nitrate smoldering combustion method, was investigated by spark plasma sintering, hot pressing and conventional sintering. The spark plasma sintering technique was shown to be superior to the other methods giving dense materials (>= 96%) with uniform morphology at lower temperatures and shorter sintering time. The grain size of the materials was 0.21, 0.37 and 12 mu m after spark plasma sintering, hot pressing and conventional sintering, respectively. Total electrical conductivity of the materials showed no clear correlation with the grain size, but the activation energy for spark plasma sintered materials was slightly higher than for materials prepared by the two other densification methods. The hardness, measured by the Vickers indentation method, was found to be independent on grain size while fracture toughness, derived by the indentation method, was slightly decreasing with increasing grain size.

  • The Negotiable Child : The ILO Child Labour Campaign 1919-1973
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation examines the Conventions and Recommendations to regulate the minimum age for admission to employment between the years 1919 and 1973 – the ILO minimum age campaign. The adoption process has been studied in its chronological and historical context. The dissertation has three points of departure: that childhood is a historical construction and that the legal material is part of that construction; that the minimum age campaign suffered from a ‘hang-over-from-history’, namely, the history of Western industrialisation during the 19th and early 20th centuries; and, finally, that children had a subordinate and weak position in the minimum age campaign. The study was organised around five central themes: (1) the over-all theme of predominant conceptions of children and work; (2) the relationship between industrialised and colonised and developing nations; (3) the relationship between the child, the family and the state; (4) minimum age; and (5) the importance of school. The most important results of the study are that: (1) In view of the revolutionary changes during the 20th century the continuity in the minimum age campaign was remarkable. In 1919, the ‘child labour problem’ was an issue mainly for the Western industrialised word. By the end of the campaign, in 1973, the transformations in societies during the century had made ‘the child labour problem’ an issue mainly for the developing world and with different conditions and implications in many respects. The content and ‘grammar’ of the minimum age campaign was however never really challenged.(2) The study has verified that the minimum age campaign suffered from a ‘hang-over-from history’. The campaign built directly on the Western industrial experience during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Western dominance in the ILO, the legal transplants, and the roots in the labour movement all contributed to the ‘hang-over’. (3) The minimum age campaign was modelled on the ‘norm of the Western industrialised childhood’. The norms and realities of childhood in other parts of the world were neglected of considered as provisional and inferior phases in relation to the Western ‘norm’. In this way, there were two separate childhoods in the minimum age campaign: ‘the normal’ childhood conceived for Western conditions and ‘the other’ childhood conceived for the ‘imperfect’ conditions of poor children in the colonised and developing nations.(4) In the minimum age campaign the ‘best interests of the child’ was negotiable and was subordinated in case of conflict with other interests.

  • An Inter-University Platform for Sharing and Collaborating in English Studies: Creating SEED (Sweden's English Educational Database for tertiary education)
  • 2009. - 1
  • Ingår i: Language and Learning. - Uppsala : Swedish Science Press. - 9789187884221 ; , s. 127-140
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Abstract: SEED is a two-year nationally-funded Swedish project (2006-2008) intended to establish a bottom-up, self-sustaining inter-university Internet-based network among active teachers and students of English in Swedish universities. This report describes its concepts, organization, failures and successes, and the general lessons that can be learned from the experience of creating and implementing such a network. SEED provides university students and teachers of English with two components: (i) a collaborative space for joint projects and exchange of ideas and (ii) a database repository of learning objects in the field of English studies. The interactive collaborative section is currently hosted by the Stockholm University version of the Sakai VLE (“Mondo”), and via guest logins is available to researchers, teachers and students at all levels. The repository in database form (currently less developed) uses the MIT/HP system called DSpace, which permits full integration with international library practices for documentation and retrieval. Once fully launched, SEED may serve as a model for similar networks in other fields of language studies, or other university areas.
