  • Status of design and construction of the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:1-2, s. 131-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS Inner Detector consists of three sub-systems, the Pixel Detector at the innermost radius, the Semi-Conductor Tracker at intermediate radii, and the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) at the outermost radius in front of the electromagnetic calorimeter. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift-tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on radiator fibres or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the current status of design and construction of the various components of the TRT: the assembly of the barrel modules has recently been completed, that of the end-cap wheels is well underway, and the on-detector front-end electronics is in production. The detector modules and front-end electronics boards will be integrated together over the next year, the barrel and end-cap TRT parts will be assembled and tested with their SCT counterparts during 2005 and installation and commissioning in the ATLAS pit will take place at the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006. • Decreasing rate of fatty involution at screening mammography
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Academic Radiology. - 1878-4046. ; 9:8, s. 895-898
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to document the perceived decrease in fatty involution at screening mammography during the past decade and evaluate the influence of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In December 1996, the mammograms of 261 consecutive screening patients with a comparison study obtained 5 years earlier were evaluated, and their breasts were categorized according to Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System categories for breast density. The women, aged 50-59 years, included 119 who had been receiving HRT for 0.25-15 years (mean, 3 years). From the files, 261 age-matched screening mammograms from 1986 were obtained; these patients also had comparison mammograms from 1981. Analysis of variance was used to determine differences between the 1980s group, the 1990s group receiving HRT, and the 1990s group not receiving HRT. Scheffe tests were used for post hoc comparisons. Stepwise regression analysis was used to evaluate the relative influence of age, decade, score of the first mammogram, and HRT. RESULTS: Breast density for the 1991 mammograms did not differ significantly from that in 1981 (P < .05). Initial breast density was the best predictor of final breast density in both decades (P < .001), regardless of HRT status. The change in breast density (toward fatty) over the 5-year interval in the 1980s (mean, 0.48) was significantly greater than that in both 1990s groups (mean for HRT group, 0.11; no HRT, 0.30; P < .05). CONCLUSION: These results confirm that breast density at screening mammography in the 1990s did not decrease with age at the same rate as in the 1980s, even in patients not receiving HRT.

  • Total levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 in plasma yield high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in patients with colon cancer
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Clinical Cancer Research. - 1078-0432. ; 8:1, s. 156-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure total levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1) by ELISA in plasma from blood donors, patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and patients with cancer and to correlate the results to patient diagnosis. Experimental Design: Total TIMP-1 plasma levels were measured by ELISA in blood samples from two different blood donor populations from IBD patients, and preoperative samples from patients with primary colon cancer (CC), rectal cancer (RC), or breast cancer. Results: There were no significant differences in plasma TIMP-1 levels between healthy donors and 1131) or breast cancer patients, whereas patients with CC or RC had significantly elevated TIMP-1 levels. Total TIMP-1 levels identified patients with CC with a sensitivity of 63% at 98% specificity, patients with early CC (Dukes' A+B) with a sensitivity of 56% at 98% specificity, and patients with right-sided CC with a sensitivity of 72% at 98% specificity. Combining carcinoembryonic antigen and TIMP-1 measurements increased the sensitivities obtained from TIMP-1 measurements alone. Conclusions: TIMP-1 was significantly elevated in plasma from CC and RC patients, including those with early-stage disease. Sensitivity and specificity were both sufficiently high to consider TIMP-1 as a marker for the early identification of CC patients, in particular, those with right-sided CC.

  • Aging studies for the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT)
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 515:1-2, s. 166-179
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A summary of the aging and material validation studies carried out for the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) is presented. Particular emphasis is put on the different phenomena observed in straw tubes operating with the chosen Xe/CF4/CO2 mixture. The most serious effects observed are silicon deposition on the anode wire and damage of the anode wire gold plating. Etching phenomena and active radical effects are also discussed. With a careful choice of all materials and components, and with good control of the water contamination in the active gas, the ATLAS TRT will operate reliably for 10 years at the LHC design luminosity. To demonstrate this fully, more work is still needed on the gas system purification elements, in particular to understand their interplay with the active species containing fluorine created in the avalanche process under irradiation.
