Fracture Toughness of a Laminated Composite

- The fracture toughness of a polymer-metal laminate composite is obtained by mechanical testing of a specimen containing a pre-crack. The laminate is a material used for packaging. It consists of a thin aluminium foil and a polymer coating. A centre cracked panel test geometry is used. Each of the layers forming the laminate is also tested separately. The result is compared with the measured fracture strength of the individual layers. It is observed that the load carrying capacity increases dramatically for the laminate. At the strain when peak load is reached for the laminate only aluminium is expected to carry any substantial load because of the low stiffness of the LDPE. However, the strength of the laminate is almost twice the strength of the aluminium foil. The reason seems to be that the aluminium forces the polymer to absorb large quantities of energy at mmall nominal strain. The toughness compares well with the accumulated toughness of all involved layers. Possible fracture of the interface between the layers is discussed.

Treating these approaches as complementary, Sexuality, Gender and Power fosters critical conversations about sexuality across disciplinary, cultural, national and ideological boundaries. Underpinned by a broad editorial commitment to intersectionality, the chapters deploy approaches that range from historical materialism to queer theory, and from contract theory to theories of the gendered sexual self to address recurrent questions around agency, power, identity and self-hood. Theoretical debates inform and are informed by more empirically oriented chapters focusing on topics such as gay identity in contemporary Croatia, sexual politics in the Commonwealth Caribbean, western "tango tourists," sexual violence in war, prostitution, femme fashion, changing sexual norms in China and Taiwan, and feminist politics in the 2008 US presidential campaign. Each chapter is interesting and important in its own right; taken together, they advance gender theory and research by developing a complex conception of sexuality that explores intersections between and amongst theories, levels of analysis and identities, linking case studies to international trends and theoretical debates to everyday experiences.

- The purpose of this article is to present a theoretical overview of what makes a leader effective using the theoretical lenses of behavioral and contingency theories and the theory of transformational leadership. We then analyze these theories from a gender perspective. The presence and effects of gender discrimination in the workplace, managerial and subordinate preconceptions and attitudes as identified in the current body of literature and the possible consequences for potential female leaders are discussed. Finally, the article turns to discuss the interaction between national and organizational culture and gender in terms of leadership opportunities. The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion on the above areas and to provide a bringing together of perspectives so as to facilitate future research. This is a review article where we theoretically examine the gender context in leadership theory and practice with some illustrations from observation and experience.

Teoksessa analysoidaan väkivaltaa, intiimiyttä ja sukupuolta haavoittuvuuden ja kulttuurin virtualisoitumisen näkökulmista. Haavoittuvuus ei aina oikeuta suojeluun, vaan yksilöiltä itseltään odotetaan kykyä riskien arviointiin ja väkivallalta suojautumiseen. Sitä mukaa kun intimiteetti asetetaan näytteille ja väkivalta näytösluonteistuu, satuttaminen arkipäiväistyy tavalla, jota emme helposti edes tunnista väkivallaksi. Teos tarkastee heteroseksuaalisen intiimin väkivallan muotoja kuten parisuhdeväkivaltaa, seksuaalista väkivaltaa, sukupuolista häirintää ja ahdistelua sukupolvieron, performatiivisuuden, viranomaisten ja oikeuden käytäntöjen kautta. Teoksen kirjoittajat ovat yhteiskunnan, oikeuden ja kulttuurin tutkijoita, joita yhdistää väkivallan kokemuksen tutkiminen osana väkivaltaa normittavia käytäntöjä. - Introduction: Caring for people affected by dementia is a collective effort that involves public health, primary care, and informal care. The third mainly comprises the efforts of spouses.Aim:This study aimed to describe spouses' experiences of living with a partner affected with dementia.Method:The study has a descriptive phenomenological approach based on a reflective life-world perspective. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted with spouses of persons affected with dementia. The interviews were audiotaped and analysed using the procedures described by Giorgi (2009).Findings: The essence of living with a partner affected by dementia formed a comprehensive theme: from togetherness to loneliness, which along with three descriptive categories—changes in their partner's behaviour, changes in everyday life, and a changed future—describes the phenomenon.Conclusion:The theme 'From togetherness to loneliness' reflects the spouses' descriptions of their life-world. Daily life changed gradually in line with their partners' personality, and their role became that of a care provider rather than a spouse. Information and knowledge about dementia should be provided at an early stage. Health care has a major responsibility to meet their needs, thus ensuring that all parties are satisfied.
