  • Surface Characterisation Using ToF-SIMS, AES and XPS of Silane Films and Organic Coatings Deposited on Metal Substrates
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work focuses on the surface and interfacial characterisation of silane films of a non-organofunctional silane, 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane (BTSE), and an organofunctional silane, γ-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS), deposited on Al, Zn and Al-43.4Zn-1.6Si (AlZn) alloy coated steel. Furthermore, a tribological study of a vegetable oil coupled to an aluminium surface pre-treated with γ-MPS is presented and, finally, the tribological response of thin organic coatings exposed to a sliding contact as evaluated by surface analysis is discussed. The main analyses techniques used were time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results presented in this thesis show that the combination of ToF-SIMS, AES and XPS analysis can be used in order to obtain useful and complementary information regarding the surface and interface characteristics of silane films and organic coatings deposited on metal substrates. The major result regarding the silane films is that the silane film composition/structure is not dependent of pH-value during deposition or type of metal substrate. The presence of Si-O-Me ion fragments in the ToF-SIMS spectra is a strong indication that a chemical interaction between the silane film and the metal substrate exists. Furthermore, it has been shown that it is possible to bond a vegetable oil to a thiol functionalised aluminium surface and to produce a coating thick enough to obtain desired friction and wear characteristics. Finally, the use of ToF-SIMS analysis makes it possible to distinguish between mechanical and tribochemical wear mechanisms.

  • Novel design for diode-pumped miniature lasers using microstructured silicon carriers
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Advanced Solid State Lasers. - : Optica Publishing Group.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new design concept for compact diode-pumped solid-state lasers is presented. The design is based on a microstructured silicon carrier with etched v-grooves. This silicon microbench provides efficient thermal management at 10W pumping level, as well as compact integration and alignment of all active and passive optical components of compact diode-pumped solid-state lasers. In initial experiments, a Nd:YAG laser built on the microbench delivered a continuous-wave output of 3W.

  • Safety Culture Onboard Ships
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEA 2000/HFES 2000 Congress. ; 4, s. 4-322
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A project focusing on identifying and describing maritime risks is being conducted in the heavily trafficked water area of the Sound, situated in northern Europe between Sweden and Denmark. This paper reports of a test of a first version of a questionnaire constructed for measuring safety culture onboard vessels.48 crew members on a Swedish registered passenger/cargo ship completed and returned the questionnaire. The crew members were able to complete the questionnaire with few unanswered questions. Acceptable homogeneity was obtained for all but one of the nine dimensions of safety culture. Significant differences on several of the safety culture dimensions were found between deck/engine vs catering personnel, men vs women and different age groups, while little differences were found for supervisors vs non-supervisors or people with varying number of years onboard. Such safety culture dimensions need to be studied in relation to reports of accidents and near-misses, to further study the true relevance of safety culture.

  • Molecular basis of the globoside-deficient P(k) blood group phenotype. Identification of four inactivating mutations in the UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine: globotriaosylceramide 3-beta-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase gene.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 277:33, s. 29455-29459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The biochemistry and molecular genetics underlying the related carbohydrate blood group antigens P, P(k), and LKE in the GLOB collection and P1 in the P blood group system are complex and not fully understood. Individuals with the rare but clinically important erythrocyte phenotypes P(1)k and P(2)k lack the capability to synthesize P antigen identified as globoside, the cellular receptor for Parvo-B19 virus and some P-fimbriated Escherichia coli. As in the ABO system, naturally occurring antibodies, anti-P of the IgM and IgG class with hemolytic and cytotoxic capacity, are formed. To define the molecular basis of the P(k) phenotype we analyzed the full coding region of a candidate gene reported in 1998 as a member of the 3-beta-galactosyltransferase family but later shown to possess UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine:globotriaosylceramide 3-beta-N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase or globoside synthase activity. Homozygosity for different nonsense mutations (C(202) --> T and 538insA) resulting in premature stop codons was found in blood samples from two individuals of the P(2)k phenotype. Two individuals with P(1)k and P(2)k phenotypes were homozygous for missense mutations causing amino acid substitutions (E266A or G271R) in a highly conserved region of the enzymatically active carboxyl-terminal domain in the transferase. We conclude that crucial mutations in the globoside synthase gene cause the P(k) phenotype.
