  • Process for continuously cooking chemical cellulose pulp : Kontinuerlig kokning med extra uppehållstid för avdragen vätska utanför kokaren
  • 2001
  • Patent (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Process for continuously cooking chemical pulp in a digester system consisting of at least one vessel for impregnating and cooking comprising an inlet into which a mixture of chips and process liquid is fed. The chips are impregnated at a predetermined impregnation temperature Timp, and cooked at a predetermined cooking temperature Tcook, after which dissolved pulp is fed out at the outlet of the digester system. Process liquid which is continually extracted is retained outside the digester system during a dwell time, t, of at least 30 min, without any heating above 140 DEG , and thereafter returned to the digester system to a position which is substantially at the same level as the extraction, or downstream thereof, and thereby constitute part of the process liquid in the subsequent treatment zone. The process results in improved tear strength, beatability, bleachability and reduced colour reversion, and increased yield across the digester.

  • A prospective 5-year multicenter study of the Cresco implantology concept
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Prosthodontics. - 0893-2174 .- 1139-9791. ; 16:5, s. 554-562
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiographic outcome of a prospective 5-year longitudinal multicenter test of a simplified implantology concept comprising an abut-ment-free implant system (Cresco) and a new method for fabrication of passively fitting superstructures, the Cresco Ti Precision method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tests were carried out at three different centers. Sixty partially or completely edentulous patients were restored by fixed implant-supported superstructures fabricated according to the Cresco Ti Precision method. In all, 215 Cresco implants were placed for the support of the superstructures. For various reasons, eight patients (13%) could not be followed through the 5 years. The radiographic measurements were recorded from radiographs exposed perpendicular to the implants. RESULTS: The initial implant failure rate (during the healing phase) was 2%, and the survival rate after loading was 98%. The mean peri-implant bone loss was 0.29 mm (SD 0.57). Of the measured sites, 71% showed a crestal bone loss of less than 0.5 mm. Very few mechanical complications were observed. This was attributed to the passively fitting superstructures. CONCLUSION: The results from the present multicenter test demonstrated that the abutment-free Cresco implantology concept is a reliable alternative method for implant-supported fixed prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous and partially edentulous jaws.

  • From preservation to creation of value
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report asks the question how to balance thepreservation of cultural built heritage against other publicand private interests in local planning. The aim of the studyis to contribute to knowledge about how different actors valuethe built heritage and how they interact in planning. The studydiscusses how this knowledge can be taken into account inplanning practice. As society develops further into a knowledgesociety, the valuation of local environmental qualities seemsto be more complex than during previous decades. For thatreason the maintenance of cultural built heritage is moredifficult to handle than before. The planning process has bytradition been characterised by a strong public sectorinvolvement and by strict procedural links to the regulationsystem. However, private initiatives have come to play anincreasingly important role in the planning process. Thesechanges have led to a situation where decision-making becomesinformal. The question is if planning functions in such waythat all values represented by different interests areconsidered carefully when decisions are made for preservation, renewal or change of the builtenvironment. There are reasonsto question the notion of citizen representation by localpoliticians and experts of various kinds. The theoreticalfoundation for the study is economic valuation theory, andespecially environmental economics, in combination withnegotiation theory and planning theory. These theories are usedas a starting point for an analysis of different actors’understanding of the cultural built heritage, their incentivesfor participating in planning, and, hence, for understandingthe interaction which determines preservation practice.Empirical findings are based on a case study of planning andheritage management in the municipality of Umeå. Itincludes studies of five recently completed planning processesconcerning specific real estate properties, as well as, aquestionnaire directed to a random selection of 1000inhabitants in the municipality. The study concludes that theoutcome of planning to a substantial part is depending of theinteraction and relations between the stakeholders, and, hence, structured by what has developed as the intellectual traditionand context of the city. The study shows that the builtenvironment seen as a public good in general is not fullyacknowledged and understood. Consequently, the private goodcharacteristic of the built environment is stressed inplanning, not only by private actors, but also by the publicsector. Furthermore, the study concludes that one importantissue in the management of the cultural built heritage is todraw on the actors’incentives for preservation, hence, paying more attention to the question of future direct andindirect use of the built heritage. An actor who primarilyfocuses on existence value runs the risk of being situated inthe margin of planning, with no real influence on decisionsconcerning heritage management.

  • Process for the manufacturing of cellulose pulp : Förfarande och kokerisystem för framställning av cellulosamassa
  • 2002
  • Patent (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The invention concerns a method for the production of cellulose pulp, in which wood raw material that principally comprises softwood, preferably in the form of cut wood chips, is treated in several stages in various treatment steps, whereby one of the stages comprises cooking the material in an alkali cooking fluid, with the aim of obtaining improved quality with respect to tensile strength, and of obtaining higher yield, whereby a controlled addition of wood raw material in the form of hardwood at an amount corresponding to 1-20% of the amount of softwood, preferably 3-15%, and more preferably at least 5%, takes place.

  • Compact design of a transmission electron microscope-scanning tunneling microscope holder with three-dimensional coarse motion
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 74:11, s. 4945-4947
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with a compact, three-dimensional, inertial slider design is presented. Inertial sliding of the STM tip, in three dimensions, enables coarse motion and scanning using only one piezoelectric tube. Using the same electronics both for scanning and inertial sliding, step lengths of less than 5% of the piezo range were achieved. The compact design, less than 1 cm3 in volume, ensures a low mechanical noise level and enables us to fit the STM into the sample holder of a transmission electron microscope (TEM), while maintaining atomic scale resolution in both STM and TEM imaging.
