  • Evaluation of a new X-band weather radar for operational use in south Sweden

    • The performance of a new type of X-band Weather Radar (WR) for Sweden during a pilot run is studied. Compared to the conventional C-band WRs, the X-band WR covers a smaller area but with a higher spatiotemporal resolution, making it suitable for urban hydrological applications. Rainfall estimations from different elevation angles of the radar (levels) are compared at one-minute and single-event timescales with the observations of several rain gauges at different ranges using hyetographs. In general, the estimations aligned well with observations and the best match appeared for ranges as long as 5–10 km. Seemingly, radar estimations suffered from overshooting of lower lying showers by higher level scans in longer ranges (19–30 km) and from the reflectivity contamination due to moving objects in short ranges (<1 km). Also, the effective range of the radar dropped sharply for the moments when a cloudburst was located over the radar. Although various sources of error could affect the X-band WR rainfall estimates, higher resolution spatiotemporal rainfall monitoring for wider areas will benefit from an integration of data from a network of X-band WRs.

  • Social and moral psychology of COVID-19 across 69 countries

    • The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

  • Autonomously Improving Systems in Industry : A Systematic Literature Review

    • A significant amount of research effort is put into studying machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) technologies. Real-world ML applications help companies to improve products and automate tasks such as classification, image recognition and automation. However, a traditional “fixed” approach where the system is frozen before deployment leads to a sub-optimal system performance. Systems autonomously experimenting with and improving their own behavior and performance could improve business outcomes but we need to know how this could actually work in practice. While there is some research on autonomously improving systems, the focus on the concepts and theoretical algorithms. However, less research is focused on empirical industry validation of the proposed theory. Empirical validations are usually done through simulations or by using synthetic or manually alteration of datasets. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we conduct a systematic literature review in which we focus on papers describing industrial deployments of autonomously improving systems and their real-world applications. Secondly, we identify open research questions and derive a model that classifies the level of autonomy based on our findings in the literature review.

    • The antibody conjugate gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO; Mylotarg((R))) provides targeted therapy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), with recent approvals for patients with CD33-positive disease at diagnosis or relapse, as monotherapy or combined with chemotherapeutics. While its clinical efficacy is well documented, the molecular routes by which GO induces AML cell death warrant further analyses. We have earlier reported that this process is initiated via mitochondria-mediated caspase activation. Here we provide additional data, focusing on the involvement of caspase-2 in this mechanism. We show that this enzyme plays an important role in triggering apoptotic death of human AML cells after exposure to GO or its active moiety calicheamicin. Accordingly, the caspase-2 inhibitor z-VDVAD-fmk reduced GO-induced caspase-3 activation. This finding was validated with shRNA and siRNA targeting caspase-2, resulting in reduced caspase-3 activation and cleavage of poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP-1). We previously demonstrated that GO-induced apoptosis included a conformational change of Bax into a pro-apoptotic state. Present data reveal that GO-treatment also induced Bid cleavage, which was partially reduced by caspase-2 specific inhibition while the effect on GO-induced Bax conformational change remained unaltered. In mononuclear cells isolated from AML patients that responded to GO treatment in vitro, processing of caspase-2 was evident, whereas in cells from an AML patient refractory to treatment no such processing was seen. When assessing diagnostic samples from 22 AML patients, who all entered complete remission (CR) following anthracycline-based induction therapy, and comparing patients with long versus those with short CR duration no significant differences in baseline caspase-2 or caspase-3 full-length protein expression levels were found. In summary, we demonstrate that GO triggers caspase-2 cleavage in human AML cells and that the subsequent apoptosis of these cells in part relies on caspase-2. These findings may have future clinical implications.

  • Antiviral treatment associated with reduced risk of clinical Alzheimer's disease : A nested case-control study

    • Introduction: In this nested case-control study, we investigated if antiviral treatment given prior to onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) could influence incident AD.Methods: From a large population-based cohort study in northern Sweden, 262 individuals that later developed AD were compared to a non-AD matched control group with respect to prescriptions of herpes antiviral treatment. All included subjects were herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) carriers and the matching criteria were age, sex, apolipoprotein E genotype (ε4 allele carriership), and study sample start year.Results: Among those who developed AD, 6 prescriptions of antivirals were found, compared to 20 among matched controls. Adjusted for length of follow-up, a conditional logistic regression indicated a difference in the risk for AD development between groups (odds ratio for AD with an antiviral prescription 0.287, P = .018).Discussion: Antiviral treatment might possibly reduce the risk for later development of HSV1-associated AD.

  • A Longitudinal Study of Medial Temporal Lobe Volumes in Graves Disease

    • Context: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are common features of Graves disease (GD) in hyperthyroidism and after treatment. The mechanism behind these symptoms is unknown, but reduced hippocampal volumes have been observed in association with increased thyroid hormone levels. Objective: This work aimed at investigating GD influence on regional medial temporal lobe (MTL) volumes. Methods: Sixty-two women with newly diagnosed GD underwent assessment including magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in hyperthyroidism and 48 of them were followed up after a mean of 16.4±4.2 SD months of treatment. Matched thyroid-healthy controls were also assessed twice at a 15-month interval. MR images were automatically segmented using multiatlas propagation with enhanced registration. Regional medial temporal lobe (MTL) volumes for amygdalae and hippocampi were compared with clinical data and data from symptom questionnaires and neuropsychological tests. Results: Patients had smaller MTL regions than controls at inclusion. At follow-up, all 4 MTL regions had increased volumes and only the volume of the left amygdala remained reduced compared to controls. There were significant correlations between the level of thyrotropin receptor antibodies (TRAb) and MTL volumes at inclusion and also between the longitudinal difference in the levels of free 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine and TRAb and the difference in MTL volumes. There were no significant correlations between symptoms or test scores and any of the 4 MTL volumes. Conclusion: Dynamic alterations in the amygdalae and hippocampi in GD reflect a previously unknown level of brain involvement both in the hyperthyroid state of the condition and after treatment. The clinical significance, as well as the mechanisms behind these novel findings, warrant further study of the neurological consequences of GD.

    • In this research report, a new methodology has been developed in order to integrate several X-band radar data sets in to one complete set. Furthermore, a direct and an indirect evaluation have been conducted compared to stationary rain gauges and C-band radar. In the indirect analysis, the input data sets were integrated into runoff models for Ellinge and Lundåkra WWTP where the results were compared to measured incoming flow to the sewage plants.

  • Rain data crowdsourcing for improving urban flood risk management : Exploring the potential in Sweden

    • &lt;p&gt;Urban flooding causes considerable societal damage and necessitates increased climate adaptation measures. Extreme rain events' rapid and local character make them difficult to observe, assess, predict, and warn about. One example is the flood event in Malm&amp;#246; in 2014, not only in terms of rain intensities and volumes but also the fact that the more intense parts of the rainfall fell across central Malm&amp;#246; with adverse consequences (approx. SEK 100 million for 1400 claims). &amp;#160;These extreme hydrological events are generally predicted to become more frequent and damaging in Sweden due to the warming climate.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The overarching aim of this study is to develop an approach to improve urban rain safety by establishing a participatory system for collecting data to support urban flood risk modelling for the adaptation of cities to intense rainfall. Nowadays, meteorological information to improve flood risk modelling can be obtained from non-traditional sources such as privately owned weather stations and social media. Crowdsourcing techniques linked to public engagement via citizen science are frequently used across different scientific areas to supplement traditional data collection.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Our analysis compiles data from available platforms (WeatherObervationWebsite (WOW) by SMHI, Netatmo platform and WunderMap website) for different case studies. The data will be organised in databases; and validated with SMHI-certified automatic rain gauges, municipal gauges, radar data and integrated gridded products.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The approach presented opens up insights into the measurement accuracy and issues in operational crowdsourcing of private rain measurements. The new type of rain data will be used for testing their applicability with flood models. The particular focus in the testing will be on the effect of model output from added spatial resolution in rain measurements.&lt;/p&gt;
