Epidemiological typing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) : spa typing versus pulsed-field gel electrophoresis

- Molecular methods based on sequencing, such as spa typing, have facilitated epidemiological typing of bacterial isolates compared to the gold standard pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), a technically more demanding method. We studied methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in 4 Swedish counties from 2003 through 2005, and compared spa typing and PFGE results to epidemiological data. Of 280 MRSA isolates, 91 were from sporadic cases and 189 were associated with 35 outbreaks. A total of 50 spa types and 74 PFGE patterns were detected. 60 (21%) of the MRSA isolates carried the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes. 12 of the PVL-positive MRSA were healthcare associated. 25 of the spa types and 31 of the PFGE patterns were associated with outbreaks. In 1 of the outbreaks we found isolates with different but closely related spa types, and in 6 of the outbreaks we observed isolates with different but related PFGE patterns. In this low-endemic setting, with outbreaks limited in time and place, we found spa typing to be a useful tool for epidemiological typing of MRSA, due to its rapidity, accessibility, ease of use, and standardized nomenclature.

- Närsjukvård är ett centralt begrepp i ett förändringsarbete som för genomförs i nordöstra Skåne för att utveckla hälso- och sjukvårdsväsendet. Det ingår därmed som en av de centrala delarna av Region Skånes vision om hälso- och sjukvård: Skånsk livskraft – vård och hälsa. Syftet med denna rapport är att ge en bakgrund till begreppet (Del A) och att presentera en del preliminära rön beträffande hur olika aktörer i nordöstra Skåne uppfattar begreppet (Del B). Del A ger en översikt kring ursprunget till begreppet Närsjukvård inom ramen för de förändringar i hälso- och sjukvården som sker i Sverige i stort. Den beskriver sedan vilka slags förändringar som har planerats på politisk nivå och som nu håller på att genomföras under detta paraplybegrepp, nationellt, regionalt och lokalt. För detta syfte används statliga dokument och publicerade utvärderingsstudier i stor utsträckning som källmaterial. Denna del ska därför inte ses som en heltäckande översikt. Del B inriktas på att belysa hur långt förverkligandet av idén om Närsjukvård har kommit inom regionen. Avsnittet är en kartläggning av olika aktörers förståelse av Närsjukvård i den nordöstra delen av Region Skåne. Forskningsfrågorna inriktades på hur folk pratade om Närsjukvård, det vill säga på hur de förstod och använde begreppet.

- The SEAMLESS project has high ambitions both concerning its scientific goals and its aim to create an impact assessment tool that can be useful in future policy making in the agrienvironmental area. Interaction between researchers and the society therefore is a crucial component of the project. In the last phase of the SEAMLESS project the dissemination of knowledge produced in the project becomes particularly important. The general objective of this Deliverable is to present the aim, topic, form, timing and responsible persons of different dissemination activities, aiming at assembling information from the policy community and at enhancing the use and dissemination of knowledge produced by the SEAMLESS project. The report covers the following main themes: • Interaction with the policy community where we separate between interactions with the User forum, targeted meetings with specialists, National Ministries and regional authorities, European Organisations as well as other users, such as Farmers organisations. • Interactions with the scientific community where we outline the SEAMLESS contributions to conferences, SEAMLESS related publications and the final Symposium that the project will organise at the end of the project. • Cooperation with other projects and how it can be strengthened during the last phase of the project. • Communication tools implemented by the project such as the SEAMLESS portal and website, the Newsletters as well as other means of communication.

Road Friction Estimation

- This project is part of the Swedish IVSS program. The aim of IVSS is to stimulate research and development for the road safety of the future. Road conditions with low friction have been identified as a frequent cause of traffic accidents. Therefore, technology to automaticallydetect changes in road conditions and alert the driver or take proper actions with active driver support systems would be a key contribution to increased road safety.The aim of this project was to investigate the possibilities to estimate the tire to road friction.Three different approaches have been developed and evaluated, from concept to early prototypes in test vehicles. In the first method, the estimation of the coefficient of friction is based on the forces and torques that are produced at the front tires at cornering maneuvers.The second method is based on a physical model of the tire behavior and estimates road friction from information on the forces that are produced at straight driving. The third method is based on an optical sensor that classifies the road surface ahead of the vehicle.The three methods have been successfully evaluated in proving ground and public road tests in summer and winter conditions with different tires, and have been compared with reference measurements. The conclusion is that all three methods can be used for tire to road frictionestimation and are recommended for further development and industrialization.

- Background: Recently, unexpected or cryptic barriers to gene flow causing genetic discontinuities have been found in a number of animal taxa, even in apparently highly connected areas such as aquatic environments. Goal: Investigate the temporal stability of previously documented microgeographic genetic structure in a fish. Organism: Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) Method: We sampled four locations over a period of 2 years. We used six microsatellites to investigate population differentiation. We compared within-year to between-year differentiation. Results: The significant genetic differentiation found between locations in 2004 was still present in 2006. The strongest barriers to gene flow in the lake were consistent over both sampling periods. Furthermore, temporal differentiation existed within each site between the years. Populations of perch appear to cluster in different patches in the lake that harbour genetically differentiated groups of fish. Hence, limited migration and barriers to dispersal can persist over time, even at a very small geographical scale and in an open aquatic environment.
