  • z-GAL: A NOEMA spectroscopic redshift survey of bright Herschel galaxies: I. Overview

    • Using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA), we conducted a Large Programme (z-GAL) to measure redshifts for 126 bright galaxies detected in the Herschel Astrophysical Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), the HerMES Large Mode Survey (HeLMS), and the Herschel Stripe 82 (HerS) Survey. We report reliable spectroscopic redshifts for a total of 124 of the Herschel-selected galaxies. The redshifts are estimated from scans of the 3 and 2-mm bands (and, for one source, the 1-mm band), covering up to 31 GHz in each band, and are based on the detection of at least two emission lines. Together with the Pilot Programme, where 11 sources had their spectroscopic redshifts measured, our survey has derived precise redshifts for 135 bright Herschel-selected galaxies, making it the largest sample of high-z galaxies with robust redshifts to date. Most emission lines detected are from 12CO (mainly from J = 2 1 to 5 4), with some sources seen in [CI] and H2O emission lines. The spectroscopic redshifts are in the range 0.8

  • The wait time to primary surgery in endometrial cancer - impact on survival and predictive factors: a population-based SweGCG study

    • Background Poor survival rates in different cancer types are sometimes blamed on diagnostic and treatment delays, and it has been suggested that such delays might be related to sociodemographic factors such as education and ethnicity. We examined associations of the wait time from diagnosis to surgery and survival in endometrial cancer (EC) and explored patient and tumour factors influencing the wait time. Material and methods In this historical population-based cohort study, The Swedish Quality Registry for Gynaecologic Cancer (SQRGC) was used to identify EC patients who underwent primary surgery between 2010 and 2018. Factors associated with a wait time > 32 d were analysed with logistic regression. The 32-d time point was defined in accordance with the Swedish Standardisation Cancer Care programme. Adjusted Poisson regression analyses were used to analyse excess mortality rate ratio (EMRR). Results Out of 7366 women, 5535 waited > 32 d for surgery and 1098 > 70 d. The overall median wait time was 44 d. The factors most strongly associated with a wait time > 32 d were surgery at a university hospital (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.34, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-1.66) followed by country of birth (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.10-1.55) and year of diagnosis. There were no associations between wait time and histology or age. A wait time < 15 d was associated with higher mortality (adjusted EMRR 2.29,95% CI 1.36-3.84) whereas no negative survival impact was seen with a wait time of 70 d. Age, tumour stage, histology and risk group were highly associated with survival, whereas education, country of origin and hospital level did not have any impact on survival. Conclusions Surgery within the first two weeks after EC diagnosis was associated with worsened survival. A prolonged wait time did not seem to have any significant adverse effect on prognosis.

    • The measurement results agree with those of previous investigations. The course of the tympanic portion is S-shaped and has an impression on its upper surface. High resolution CT reproduces dehiscences of the bony canal in a percentage similar to that of microscopical methods and in relevant sites. Pneumatization does not influence the dimensions of the 2 portions.

  • Very high cycle fatigue of high performance steels

    • Many engineering components reach a finite fatigue life well above 109 load cycles. Some examples of such components are found in airplanes, automobiles or high speed trains. For some materials the fatigue failures have lately been found to occur well after 107 load cycles, namely in the Very High Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) range. This finding contradicted the established concept of fatigue limit for these materials, which postulates that having sustained 107 load cycles the material is capable of enduring an infinite number of cycles provided that the service conditions are unchanged. With the development of modern ultrasonic fatigue testing equipment it became possible to experimentally establish VHCF behaviour of various materials. For most of them the existence of the fatigue limit at 107 load cycles has been proved wrong and their fatigue strength continues to decrease with increasing number of load cycles.   One important group of materials used for the production of high performance components subjected to the VHCF is tool steels. This study explores the VHCF phenomenon using experimental data of ultrasonic fatigue testing of some tool steel grades. The causes and mechanisms of VHCF failures are investigated by means of high resolution scanning electron microscopy, and in relation to the existing theories of fatigue crack initiation and growth. The main type of VHCF origins in steels are slag inclusions. However, other microstructural defects may also initiate fatigue failure. A particular attention is paid to the fatigue crack initiation, as it has been shown that in the VHCF range crack formation consumes the majority of the total fatigue life. Understanding the driving forces for the fatigue crack initiation is a key to improve properties of components used for very long service lives. Finite element modelling of VHCF testing was added as an additional perspective to the study by enabling calculation of local stresses at the fatigue initiating defects.

    • In this paper, we present a numerical simulation of a laminar, steady and Newtonian flow of f-graphene nanoplatelet/water nanofluid in a new microchannel design with factors for increasing heat transfer such as presence of ribs, curves to enable satisfactory fluid mixing and changing fluid course at the inlet and exit sections. The results of this study show that Nusselt number is dependent on nanoparticles concentration, inlet geometry and Reynolds number. As the nanofluid concentration increases from 0 to 0.1% and Reynolds number from 50 to 1000, the Nusselt number enhances nearly up to 3% for increase in fluid concentration and averagely from 15.45 to 54.1 and from 14.5 to 55.9 for geometry with and without rectangular rib, respectively. The presence of ribs in the middle section of microchannel and curves close to hot walls causes a complete mixing of the fluid in different zones. When the nanoparticles concentration is increased, the pressure drop and velocity gradient will become higher. An increased concentration of nanoparticles in contribution with higher Reynolds numbers only increases the fraction factor slightly. (The fraction factor increases nearly 37% and 35% for Re = 50 and 1000, respectively.) The highest uniform temperature distribution can be found in the first zones of fluid in the microchannel and by further movement of fluid toward exit section, because of decreasing difference between surface and fluid temperature, the growth of temperature boundary layer increases and results in non-uniformity in temperature distribution in microchannel and cooling fluid. With decrease in the concentration from 0 to 0.1%, the average outlet temperature and FOM decrease nearby 0.62% and 6.15, respectively.

  • Emerging Themes and Future Directions of Multi-Sector Nexus Research and Implementation

    • Water, energy, and food are all essential components of human societies. Collectively, their respective resource systems are interconnected in what is called the "nexus". There is growing consensus that a holistic understanding of the interdependencies and trade-offs between these sectors and other related systems is critical to solving many of the global challenges they present. While nexus research has grown exponentially since 2011, there is no unified, overarching approach, and the implementation of concepts remains hampered by the lack of clear case studies. Here, we present the results of a collaborative thought exercise involving 75 scientists and summarize them into 10 key recommendations covering: the most critical nexus issues of today, emerging themes, and where future efforts should be directed. We conclude that a nexus community of practice to promote open communication among researchers, to maintain and share standardized datasets, and to develop applied case studies will facilitate transparent comparisons of models and encourage the adoption of nexus approaches in practice.
