    • The Astrid-2 mission has dual primary objectives. First, it is an orbiting instrument platform for studying auroral electrodynamics. Second, it is a technology demonstration of the feasibility of using micro-satellites for innovative space plasma physics research. The EMMA instrument, which we discuss in the present paper, is designed to provide simultaneous sampling of two electric and three magnetic field components up to about 1 kHz. The spin plane components of the electric field are measured by two pairs of opposing probes extended by wire booms with a separation distance of 6.7 m. The probes have titanium nitride (TiN) surfaces. which has proved to be a material with excellent properties for providing good electrical contact between probe and plasma. The wire booms are of a new design in which the booms in the stowed position are wound around the exterior of the spacecraft body. The boom system was flown for the first time on this mission and worked flawlessly. The magnetic field is measured by a tri-axial fluxgate sensor located at the tip of a rigid. hinged boom extended along the spacecraft spin axis and facing away from the Sun. The new advanced-design fluxgate magnetometer uses digital signal processors for detection and feedback, thereby reducing the analogue circuitry to a minimum. The instrument characteristics as well as a brief review of the science accomplished and planned are presented.

  • Initial stability of ankle arthrodesis with three-screw fixation. A finite element analysis

    • Objective. Compare the initial stability at the fusion site of ankle arthrodesis fixed with two and three screws. Design. Finite element models of ankle arthrodesis were developed from computed tomography images. Two-screw constructs were augmented with a third screw in different orientations and Subjected to loads likely to affect the ankle postoperatively. Background More stable fixation seems to increase the chance of fusion, as it minimises the motion between the tibiotalar interfaces. Methods. Non-linear elastic finite element analyses were performed in external torsion and dorsiflexion. The micromotions at the tibiotalar interface were computed to compare the two- and three-screw fixation in intact and flat-cut arthrodesis. Results. Adding a third screw reduced the micromotions at the fusion site. Inserting the third screw anteriorly predicted lower peak micromotions than inserting the screw posteriorly, except for the intact arthrodesis tested in dorsiflexion. Three-screw intact arthrodesis predicted lower peak micromotions than flat-cut arthrodesis. Conclusions. Better stability was predicted for three-screw ankle arthrodesis. In flat-cut arthrodesis, a third screw inserted anteriorly performed better than a posterior screw. In intact arthrodesis, a posterior screw seemed a better option when flexion stability was the main concern. Even with three-screw fixation, the configuration of the first two-crossed screws may still be important to improve the stability at the fusion site. Relevance The optimal number and placement of screws in ankle arthrodesis has yet to be determined. The differences in stability predicted between various screw configurations and Surface preparation techniques presented here may be the difference between success and failure. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd.   • The effect of bone quality on the stability of ankle arthrodesis. A finite element study

    • Background: Despite uniform operating techniques, lack of fusion still occurs after ankle arthrodesis. Differences in the biological healing potential may be a factor but the mechanical performance of the arthrodesis construct because of varying bone quality also may be important. Internal compression techniques are preferred because of higher union rates, shorter fusion times, and fewer complications. A three-screw configuration has been shown to be more stable than a two-screw configuration, but it is not obvious when it should be used. Methods: Three-dimensional finite element models of intact and flat-cut ankle arthrodeses were built, using two and three screws in different configurations. Poor bone quality was simulated by decreasing Young's modulus of the bone. The constructs were loaded in torsion and dorsiflexion, and micromotions at the fusion site were measured. Results: Bone quality had a marked effect on the stability at the arthrodesis site. Inserting two screws at 30 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the tibia in an intact arthrodesis seemed the best option, especially as bone quality worsened. The addition of a third screw increased the stability at the arthrodesis site. Conclusions: Overall, intact joint surfaces and three-screw fixation, with the lateral and medial screws inserted produced the most stable arthrodesis constructs when bone quality was poor. Clinical Relevance. Ankle arthrodeses are technically demanding because of the shape and small size of the talus. Preoperative planning is an absolute necessity to determine placement and number of screws. This study shows that poor bone quality decreases the stability of the arthrodesis constructs, suggesting that an attempt should be made to create the most stable three-screw configuration. Finite element models can be used as an effective preoperative tool for planning screw number and placement.

    • SDS wormlike micelles in water with NaBr are studied using small-angle neutron scattering. SDS concentrations ranging from 0.08 to 8.6 % vol in NaBr aqueous solutions at salinities from 0.6 to 1.0 M are covered. The scattering data are analyzed using a novel approach based on polymer theory and the results of Monte Carlo simulations. The method makes it possible to give a full interpretation of the scattering data, even for the entangled micellar solutions occurring at high concentrations and high salinities. Analysis of the scattering data at zero scattering angle demonstrates that the length of the micelles increases according to a power law as a function of concentration in the studied interval. The analysis furthermore shows that the length of the micelles increases exponentially with increasing salinity. The scattering data in the full range of scattering angles are analyzed using a model for polydisperse wormlike micelles where excluded volume effects are taken into account via an expression based on the polymer reference interaction site model (PRISM). This part of the analysis show that the micelles become more flexible as the salinity increases, which is due to an increased screening of the ionic micelles.

    • The structure of aggregates formed in aqueous mixtures of a single-chain anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a double-chain cationic surfactant, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), has been investigated at 38 degrees C using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Several overall surfactant concentrations [SDS] + [DDAB] between 0.1 and 5 wt % were measured at the two SDS-rich compositions [SDS]:[DDAB] = 90:10 and 95:5. Samples with a concentration above about [SDS] + [DDAB] = 1 wt % at [SDS]:[DDAB] = 95:5 contained only somewhat elongated tablet-shaped micelles (triaxial ellipsoids) with typical values of the half-axes a (related to the thickness) = 14 Angstrom, b (related to the width) = 23 Angstrom, and c (related to the length) = 27 Angstrom. When a sample at [SDS]:[DDAB] = 95:5 is diluted below about [SDS] + [DDAB] = 1 wt %, an increasing amount of small unilamellar vesicles forms, and in the samples below about 0.2 wt %, only vesicles are observed. The average radius of the vesicles [R] increases from about 90 Angstrom at 0.3 wt % to 110 Angstrom at 0.1 wt %. The transition from micelles to vesicles with decreasing surfactant concentration was also observed in the samples at [SDS]:[DDAB] = 90:10 in which, however, an additional amount of bilayer sheets was seen to be always present. Compared with the micelles at [SDS]:[DDAB] = 95:5, the micelles formed at [SDS]:[DDAB] = 90:10 were considerably longer (c approximate to 40 Angstrom), but with similar cross section dimensions, and the vesicles formed were seen to be somewhat larger than the corresponding aggregates at 95:5. The relative standard deviation sigma(R)/[R] of the (number-weighted) vesicle size distributions was in the range 0.2 < sigma(R)/[R] < 0.3.

    • The internal structure of the solid phase formed in mixtures of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and a range of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes with different side chains and charge density has been investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering. Polyelectrolytes with short side chains ([3-(2-methylpropionamido)propyl]trimethylammonium chloride, MAPTAC, and poly{[(2-propionyloxy)ethyl]-trimethylammonium chloride}, PCMA) form a 2-dimensional hexagonal structure with SDS, whereas a polyelectrolyte without side chains (poly(vinlyamine), PVAm) forms a lamellar structure. The hexagonal structure of MAPTAC is retained either when a neutral monomer (acrylamide, AM) is included in the polymer backbone to reduce the charge density or when a nonionic surfactant is admixed to the SDS/polyelctrolyte complex.. The unit cell length of AM-MAPTAC increases with decreasing charge density from a=47.7 Angstrom (MAPTAC, 100% charge density) to 58.5 Angstrom (AM-MAPTAC, 30% charge density). The unit cell length in the lamellar SDS/PVAm complex (a=36.1 Angstrom) is significantly smaller than for the different hexagonal structures. It is conjectured that the cylinders in the hexagonal structure and the bilayers in the lamellar structure are based on self-assembled surfactant aggregates with the polyelectrolyte mainly located in the aqueous region adjacent to the charged surfactant headgroups.
