  • The Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage Study : objectives and design
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 278:6, s. 645-659
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cardiopulmonary diseases are major causes of death worldwide, but currently recommended strategies for diagnosis and prevention may be outdated because of recent changes in risk factor patterns. The Swedish CArdioPulmonarybioImage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imaging technologies, advances in large-scale 'omics' and epidemiological analyses to extensively characterize a Swedish cohort of 30 000 men and women aged between 50 and 64 years. The information obtained will be used to improve risk prediction of cardiopulmonary diseases and optimize the ability to study disease mechanisms. A comprehensive pilot study in 1111 individuals, which was completed in 2012, demonstrated the feasibility and financial and ethical consequences of SCAPIS. Recruitment to the national, multicentre study has recently started.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Dagens nyheter (DN debatt). - 1101-2447.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • DN DEBATT 15/3.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imaging technologies, large-scale proteomics/metabolomics/genomics, and epidemiological analyses to extensively characterize a Swedish cohort of 30,000 men and women aged between 50 and 64 years. Its main aims are to improve risk prediction and to optimize our ability to study mechanisms of cardiopulmonary diseases. SCAPIS is currently recruiting at six sites in Sweden, and a pilot study was conducted in 2012 to test the feasibility of the comprehensive study protocol. In the planning phase, it was recognized that the detailed phenotyping used in SCAPIS would identify a large number of clinical findings in need of medical attention. This was confirmed by evaluation of results from the pilot study. Here we focus on pulmonary nodules and asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis. These clinical features were observed in a large number of participants, and the clinical handing and prognosis related to these observations are unclear. They thus posed great challenges for the study in their practical and ethical handling. This chapter describes how we developed procedures to handle these findings based on existing evidence and expert consensus as well as deliberations on ethical issues.

  • Compression analysis for assessment of pellet plasticity : Identification of reactant pores and comparison between Heckel, Kawakita, and Adams equations
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Chemical engineering research & design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-8762 .- 1744-3563. ; 110, s. 183-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The issue of accurate derivation of a granule yield stress by the traditional procedure using the Heckel equation in addition to the Kawakita and Adams equations has been addressed. The accuracy of the derived parameters was assessed from comparison of single-particle yield pressures from uniaxial compressions. The single-particle yield pressure was nearly four-fold higher for microcrystalline pellets of low (LP) compared to of high (HP) porosity. Heckel profiles were derived using in situ (in-die) and ex situ (out-of-die) global porosities and ex situ voidage porosities derived from mercury porosimetry of pellets and retrieved pellets from tablets. The voidage Heckel profiles enabled a clear distinction between the LP and HP pellets in contrast to the global Heckel profiles. Thus, the voidage was concluded as a better descriptor of the effective porosity of the reactant pore system than the global porosity for calculations of the Heckel numbers. Due to the challenging and tedious work of deriving precise voidage data, derivation of Kawakita b(-1) and Adams parameters remains an interesting approach for assessing granule plasticity. These clearly differentiated between the HP and LP plasticity, thus suggesting that both parameters can be used as a descriptor of pellet plasticity in analytical powder compression analysis.

  • The (misconceived) distinction between internal and external validity
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Against boredom: 17 essays on ignorance, values, creativity, metaphysics, decision-making, truth, preference, art, processes, Ramsey, ethics, rationality, validity, human ills, science, and eternal life to Nils-Eric Sahlin on the occasion of his 60th birthday. - 9789187935374 ; , s. 187-195
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Researchers often aim to make correct inferences both about that which is actually studied (internal validity) and about what the results generalize to (external validity). The language of internal and external validity is not used by everyone, but many of us would agree that intuitively the distinction makes a lot of sense. Two claims are commonly made with respect to internal and external validity. The first is that internal validity is prior to external validity since there is nothing to generalize if the findings obtained in, for instance, the experimental setting do not hold. The first claim is explicit in many writings. See for instance Francisco Guala’s influential book The methodology of experimental economics (2005). And it is often implicitly relied on. The second claim is that researchers have to make a trade-off between internal and external validity. When one is increased, the other will decrease. The second claim was made already from the start by D.T Campbell in his classic Factors relevant to the validity of experiments in social settings (e.g., Campbell 1957, 297). There is a certain tension between the first and the second claim. It has been argued before that it might be difficult to combine them. We intend to make the stronger point that both claims are misconstrued. Our hypothesis is that the relationship between internal and external validity has to be re-conceptualized, and we will briefly indicate how.

  • Numerical Study of Reduction in Vibrations Induced by Water-Pipe System
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Dynamics of Civil Structures. ; 2, s. 407-419
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In certain buildings such as synchrotrons and large ground telescopes, strict requirements are stated regarding the vibration levels. Both external and internal vibration sources, for example traffic and indoor water pumps, can have an appreciable effect on the vibration levels in the buildings. The synchrotron research facility MAX IV, which is currently under construction in Sweden, serves as an example case for the analyses. In MAX IV, several water-pipe systems used for cooling purposes will be placed near vibration sensitive equipment. These systems will transmit vibrations, into structural parts of the facility, which could exceed the vibration requirements. Structural modifications of pipe systems are investigated here by means of the finite element method in order to reduce vibration levels in the building. The finite element model employed includes a water-pipe system, adjacent building parts and the underlying soil. The use of fluid-structure interaction is investigated as well as the use of component mode synthesis. This paper focuses on the numerical procedure used as well as the effects on transmitted vibrations by different placements of the pipe supports.
