  • Vein blood rheology alterations immediately after coronary angiography with iohexol, and one month later.
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Clinical Hemorheology. - New York, USA : Pergamon Press. - 0271-5198. ; 16:6, s. 737-743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract  The effects of coronary angiography with iohexol upon vein blood rheology were studied before, immediately after and one month after angiography. Haematocrit decreased from 40.5 % to 39.0 % immediately after angiography (p < 0.01). When this was compensated for by in vitro standardisation of sample haematocrits to 45% there was a blood viscosity increase by 10.9 - 15.0 %, at the four studied shear rates 0.8 s-1, 2.3 s-1,   19.6 s-1, and 40.0 s-1 (p < 0.05 - p < 0.01). In unadjusted samples, i.e. at the patients natural haematocrits, there was only a slight and statistically      non-significant blood viscosity increase. Plasma viscosity decreased immediately after angiography, and was even lower 1 month after angiography. The haematocrit reduction correlated significantly with the iohexol doses (correlation coefficient -0.852, p < 0.001), whereas no significant correlation was found between the contrast volumes and the alterations of blood and plasma viscosity. Except for plasma viscosity, there were no significant differences when the values before angiography and one month later were compared. • The aetiology and pathogenesis of human breast cancer
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Mutation research. - 0027-5107 .- 1873-135X. ; 333:1-2, s. 29-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whilst investigators have clearly shown that non-hereditary factors dominate the aetiology of human breast cancer, they have failed to identify quantitatively important causes, and prospects for prevention remain indeed limited. However, progress in epidemiological and basic research has taken place during the last few years. Current evidence suggests that breast cancer may be affected by the intra-uterine environment, that exposures during adolescence are particularly important, and that pregnancy has a dual effect on breast cancer risk: an early increase followed by long-term protection. Great variation exists in the structural development of the breast ductal system already in the newborn--and by inference in utero--and a pregnancy induces permanent structural changes in the mammary gland. We suggest that these observations fit into an aetiological model with the following key components: (1) breast cancer risk depends on the number of cells at risk, the susceptibility of individual cells to malignant transformation, and on the degree of cellular proliferation, notably cells which can act as founders of breast cancer; (2) the number of target cells is determined by the hormonal environment mainly early in life, perhaps already in utero; (3) in adult life, hormones which are non-genotoxic, increase breast cancer risk by increasing selective cell proliferation and thus number of target cells and the risk of retention of spontaneous somatic mutations; (4) while a pregnancy stimulates the growth of already malignant cells or cells close to malignant transformation (and thereby entails a short-term risk increase) the dominating long-term protection occurs due to permanent structural changes, terminal differentiation and perhaps decreased cell proliferation and carcinogen-binding in combination.

  • Labor Supply Prediction when Tax Avoidance Matters
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We examine how tax avoidance in the form of trade in well-functioning asset markets affects the emipircal study of labor supply. We discuss the implications for tax policy analysis, and we show that a failure to account for avoidance responses may lead to huge errors when predicting how tax reform affects labor supply, tax revenue, and the welfare cost of taxation. in conclusion we argue that our model may explain a number of otherwise hard to understand dimensions of tax payer response.

  • A low-complexity PAR-reduction method for DMT-VDSL
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Digital Signal Processing for Communication Systems. ; , s. 164-169
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DMT-VDSL signals have a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAR). In the transmitters, the PAR governs the necessary resolution of the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and is an important factor for the power consumption of the line-driver. Aiming at implementation in a specific system, we propose a low complexity PAR-reduction method based on the iterative algorithm derived in [5, 20, 24, 25]. We maintain good performance while stressing a straigthforward and low-complex implementation. Key elements of the method are: low latency; no loss in data rate; precalculated and stored peak-cancellation waveform; and bit-shifts (multiplication with powers of two) replacing the scaling of the waveform. Computer simulations show that, for a DMT frame length of 4096 samples and a frame clip rate of 10-4, the PAR can be reduced about 1.5 to 2.0 dB, depending on the number of peaks cancelled. When multiplication is replaced by bit-shifts, the reduction is still 1.5-1.7 dB.

  • Changes of blood viscosity in pateints treated with 5-fluorouracil : A link to cardiotoxicity?
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - Norway. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 34:1, s. 83-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract  Cardiotoxicity is a serious but relatively unknown side-effect of treatment with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The underlying mechanism of 5-FU cardiotoxicity has not been defined. The aim of the present study was to determine whether hemorheological factors might in part explain 5-FU cardiotoxicity. Changes of blood and plasma viscosity, fibrinogen and hematocrit were studied in 11 patients treated by 5-FU. The study showed a decrease in blood and plasma viscosity during treatment with 5-FU, probably caused by a decrease of plasma fibrinogen. Reversible cardiotoxic effects were demonstrated in four patients.
