Characterization of Listeria strains isolated from soft cheese

- Three soft cheeses were exposed to quantitative analysis for listeria and found to contain a large number of listeria. Thirty-five of the listeria strains isolated from the three cheeses were characterized by use of biochemical tests, serotyping, phagetyping and DNA restriction enzyme analysis. Seven isolates were identified as Listeria innocuaand 28 as Listeria monocytogenes. Two to four different clones of L. monocytogenescould be identified from each cheese. In contrast, only one clone could be detected among the L. innocua isolates. From an epidemiological point of view the findings of different clones of L. monocytogenes in the same cheese emphasize the need for typing several listeria isolates from one and the same food sample. It is concluded that the best overview of the population of the listeria strains is obtained after direct plating of the sample followed by enumeration, isolation and extensive typing.

Contact angles of ultrafiltration membranes and their possible correlation to membrane performance

- The captive bubble method was used to describe the wetting characteristics of a number of commercial ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. The membranes belonged to one of two homologous (same material, different cut-off) series made by the same manufacturer. One series was made of polysulphone and the other one of cellulose triacetate. The porosimetric characteristics of the membranes have also been measured. The combined data were used to explain the fouling behaviour of the membranes upon ultrafiltration of solutions containing dextran, whey protein concentrate and silicate sols. The cellulose triacetate series is characterized by lower receding contact angle and smaller contact angle hysteresis and shows better flux behaviour (permeate flux during UF and pure water flux recovery at the end of UF) than the polysulphone series. Within the same series the mean permeability pore size shows a better correlation with membrane flux behaviour than with contact angle hysteresis.

- To improve image quality in the upper thoracic spine, an anatomically shaped copper wire loop coil, made to fit over the patient's shoulders, was constructed. The coil was permanently mounted on a foam-rubber vest to facilitate attachment to the patient. Phantom and in vivo studies of the performance of the coil in healthy volunteers showed as much as a two times greater signal-to-noise ratio relative to that of standard coils for the upper thoracic spine. In a patient with lesions in the upper thoracic cord, the coil gave better image quality in the region of interest than did the standard coils. The coil has been integrated into the authors' routine imaging equipment and has been the coil of choice for imaging of the upper thoracic spine on their 0.3-T vertical field system.
