  • The Sutherland tradition in criminology : a bibliometric story
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Criminal justice studies. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1478-601X .- 1478-6028. ; 26:1, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we provide an overview of the body of knowledge associated with the Sutherland tradition in criminology. We track Sutherland's impact through a bibliometric analysis of papers citing any of Sutherland's works and by focusing on publications that are co-cited with Sutherland. This approach enables us to visualize Sutherland's role in relation to the forerunners and founding fathers of criminology during his own active period, to his followers, and to contemporary scholars. The dataset consisted of 2596 genuine articles that cite at least one of Sutherland's publications, in which he appears as first author in Web of Science TM published between 1955 and 2010. The results show a clear impact of the Sutherland tradition more or less throughout the twentieth century, peaking during the 1930s and 1940s and decreasing in the 1990s, when the Sutherland tradition was more powerfully challenged, primarily by the life-course tradition.

  • The Swedish production of highly cited papers
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report analyses how Swedish research stands in bibliometrical comparison with research in the four European countries of Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK, which have a higher average citation than Sweden, as well as Finland, which is number eight in Europe. The report shows that the five countries being compared have performed better than Sweden in the past twenty years, both with respect to average citation and the production of highly cited publications. Explanations for this have been sought in achievements in different subjects, degrees of international cooperation, degrees of interdisciplinary research and publication in the most prominent journals, among other things. But the reason for citation of Swedish research not performing at par with the five countries being compared proves difficult to pick up on in bibliometrical statistics. The causes seem more likely to be on the “systematic level”.

  • Mapping the geography of science : Distribution patterns and networks of relations among cities and institutes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of The American Society For Information Science And Technology. - : Wiley. - 1532-2882 .- 1532-2890. ; 61:8, s. 1622-1634
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using Google Earth, Google Maps, and/or network visualization programs such as Pajek, one can overlay the network of relations among addresses in scientific publications onto the geographic map. The authors discuss the pros and cons of various options, and provide software (freeware) for bridging existing gaps between the Science Citation Indices (Thomson Reuters) and Scopus (Elsevier), on the one hand, and these various visualization tools on the other. At the level of city names, the global map can be drawn reliably on the basis of the available address information. At the level of the names of organizations and institutes, there are problems of unification both in the ISI databases and with Scopus. Pajek enables a combination of visualization and statistical analysis, whereas the Google Maps and its derivatives provide superior tools on the Internet.

  • Are highly cited papers more international?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 83:2, s. 397-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract  Several bibliometric studies have shown that international or multicountry papers are generally more cited than domestic or single country papers. Does this also hold for the most cited papers? In this study, the citation impact of domestic versus international papers is analyzed by comparing the share of international papers among the hundred most cited papers in four research specialities, from three universities, four cities and two countries. It is concluded that international papers are not well represented among high impact papers in research specialities, but dominate highly cited papers from small countries, and from cities and institutions within them. The share of international papers among highly cited papers is considerably higher during 2001–2008 compared to earlier years for institutions, cities and countries, but somewhat less for two of the research fields and slightly higher for the other two. Above all, domestic papers from the USA comprise about half of the highly cited papers in the research specialities.

  • Citation analysis to reconstruct the dynamics of Antarctic ozone hole research and formulation of the Montreal Protocol
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Current Science. - 0011-3891. ; 104:7, s. 835-840
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ozone layer acts like a shield in safeguarding the Earth by preventing the harmful ultraviolet radiations from entering into the atmosphere. Reported damage to the ozone layer in 1985 was a significant milestone in Antarctic science research. The research work played a significant role in generating international socio-political debate on this great environmental crisis. This article aims to reconstruct the intellectual developments in the field and identify important scientific events which contributed to the formulation of the world’s most successful multilateral treaty, the Montreal Protocol. The dynamics of the research field was mapped using a newly developed indicator – weighted direct citations (WDC). The WDC value indicates intellectual closeness between two citations in terms of co-citations and shared references. Direct citations were weighted with shared references and co-citations to derive WDC values. An attempt was made to decompose the citation network of articles to identify significant activity layers. The work of J. C. Farman et al. (1985) and S. Solomon (1986), which are the top two most cited significant papers in the subject accounts for top WDC values jointly.
