- Rolling bearing simulations are very computationally in tensive. Serial simulations may take weeks to execute, and there is a need to use the potential of parallel comput ing. The specific structure of the rolling bearing problem is used to develop suitable scheduling strategies. The authors discuss the system of stiff ordinary differential equations arising from a bearing model and show how to numerically solve these ordinary differential equations on parallel computers. Benchmarking results are presented for two test cases on three platforms.

- Denna rapport innehåller sju betraktelser av KommunAktuellt nummer 5 1997. Med den starka ställning KommunAktuellt har är det säkert ingen som ifrågasätter behovet av en granskning av tidningen. Alla makthavare förtjänar att granskas - även pressen! Den valda granskningsmetoden kan däremot komma att förvåna läsaren. Sju forskare presenterar var sin betraktelse. Stilarna skiljer sig från vad som är brukligt i akademiska sammanhang. Granskningen omfattar helhet och delar ur olika perspektiv. Resultatet är en mycket läsvärd rapport som ger spännande insikter om den betraktade tidningen. Den kommer förhoppningsvis också att få läsaren att med större öppenhet våga betrakta viktiga fenomen i sin egen omgivning.

- A pattern synthesis technique for a conformal array antenna on a cylinder is presented using the method of alternate projections. Both the sidelobe region and the shape of the main beam are controlled. The method includes the effect of the mutual coupling in the synthesis. It is shown that if mutual coupling is neglected, then poor results are obtained, especially in the shaped beam region.

- A central problem for real-time scheduling is to acquire tight but conservative bounds on task execution times. We present a prototype for an environment where such bounds are interactively presented, in terms of source code constructs, to the programmer during development. The prototype is based on the language development tool APPLAB and uses an extended attribute grammar formalism, reference attributed grammars (RAGs), which overcomes some drawbacks of conventional attribute grammars in this context (e.g. description of non-local dependencies). In this paper we show how timing schemata can be implemented as RAGs. Our experience is that the RAG approach allows timing schemata to be implemented in a clear, concise, and modular manner.

- Real-time garbage collection is essential if object-oriented languages (in particular, Java) are to become predictable enough for real-time embedded systems. Although techniques for hard real-time garbage collection exist, they are based on estimations of the maximum amount of referenced (live) memory. Such estimations may be difficult to derive manually for complex programs.We present techniques for predicting the maximum amount of live memory in object-oriented languages with inheritance and virtual methods. Annotations are used to bound recursively defined data structures. The annotations may also be used for timing analysis of code traversing annotated structures.A prototype live memory analysis tool has been developed. The tool interactively provides predictions of the maximum amount of live memory referenced from an arbitrary reference or block in an object-oriented program.

The report also presents the background, motivation, and research topics in the ARTES project Integrated Control and Scheduling.
