  • The character of a VR -visualization
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 26th International Systems Research in Scandinavia (IRIS)Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When we humans are dealing with complex things in our daily lives, for example an artifact, we tend to ascribe different characters to it. This is our way of getting a quick overview of the artifact and makes it understandable to us. The ascribing of character is not based on thorough examination of the object at hand though, but rather on a certain thing, i.e. a characteristic that catches our attention. This characteristic gives us a certain feeling about the artifact and makes it possible for us to make a judgment about it, even if it is a snap one. With this as a starting point we try to identify the different characteristics, which constitute the overall character, i.e. realism. In many visualisations with this objective, realism is juxtaposed with copying static structures, i.e. buildings and streets. This is also a strong contributor to the realism character in the Botnia-track visualisation. In our opinion this is not enough to get a realistic character. We have identified a few other prominent characteristics that also are important contributors to the realism character, for example landmarks, sound, moving objects and narrator voice. Our main conclusion is that if a realistic character is desirable, more than visualisation of static structures is necessary. We found at least five additional characteristics that influence people’s perception of a virtualisation; landmarks, sound, moving objects and narrator voice. In our opinion, all of these are important for a realistic character to emerge and something that designers have to take in to consideration to reach the intended goal.

  • Growth of Ti3SiC2 thin films by elemental target magnetron sputtering
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 96:9, s. 4817-4826
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Epitaxial Ti3SiC2(0001) thin films have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering from three elemental targets of Ti, C, and Si onto MgO(111) and Al2O3(0001) substrates at temperatures of 800–900 °C. This process allows composition control to synthesize Mn + 1AXn (MAX) phases (M: early transition metal; A: A-group element; X: C and/or N; n = 1–3) including Ti4SiC3. Depositions on MgO(100) substrates yielding the Ti–Si–C MAX phases with (105), as the preferred orientation. Samples grown at different substrate temperatures, studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction investigations, revealed the constraints of Ti3SiC2 nucleation due to kinetic limitations at substrate temperatures below 700 °C. Instead, there is a competitive TiCx growth with Si segregation to form twin boundaries or Si substitutional incorporation in TiCx. Physical properties of the as-deposited single-crystal Ti3SiC2 films were determined. A low resistivity of 25 µ cm was measured. The Young's modulus, ascertained by nanoindentation, yielded a value of 343–370 GPa. For the mechanical deformation response of the material, probing with cube corner and Berkovich indenters showed an initial high hardness of almost 30 GPa. With increased maximum indentation loads, the hardness was observed to decrease toward bulk values as the characteristic kink formation sets in with dislocation ordering and delamination at basal planes.

  • Quantitative analysis of immunogold labeling indicates low levels and non-vesicular localization of L-aspartate in rat primary afferent terminals.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Comparative Neurology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0021-9967 .- 1096-9861. ; 430:2, s. 147-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of L-aspartate as an excitatory neurotransmitter in primary afferent synapses in the spinal cord dorsal horn is disputed. To further investigate this issue, we examined the presence of aspartate-like immunoreactivity in primary afferent nerve terminals and other tissue components of the dorsal horn. We also examined the relationship between aspartate and glutamate immunogold labeling density and the density of synaptic vesicles in primary afferent terminals and presumed inhibitory terminals forming symmetric synapses. Weak aspartate immunosignals, similar to or lower than those displayed by presumed inhibitory terminals, were detected in both C-fiber primary afferent terminals in lamina II (dense sinusoid axon terminals, identified by morphological criteria) and in A-fiber primary afferent terminals in laminae III-IV (identified with anterograde transport of choleragenoid-horseradish peroxidase conjugate). The aspartate immunogold signal in primary afferent terminals was only about one-fourth of that in deep dorsal horn neuronal cell bodies. Further, whereas significant positive correlations were evident between synaptic vesicle density and glutamate immunogold labeling density in both A- and C-fiber primary afferent terminals, none of the examined terminal populations displayed a significant correlation between synaptic vesicle density and aspartate immunogold labeling density. Thus, our results indicate relatively low levels and a non-vesicular localization of aspartate in primary afferent terminals. It is therefore suggested that aspartate, rather than being a primary afferent neurotransmitter, serves a role in the intermediary metabolism in primary afferent terminals.

  • Multireference Calculations of the Phosphorescence and Photodissociation of Chlorobenzene
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606. ; 121:11000
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multireference complete active space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) and multireference CASSF second-order perturbation theory (MSCASPT2) calculations were performed on the ground state and a number of low-lying excited singlet and triplet states of chlorobenzene. The dual phosphorescence observed experimentally is clearly explained by the MSCASPT2 potential-energy curves. Experimental findings regarding the dissociation channels of chlorobenzene at 193, 248, and 266 nm are clarified from extensive theoretical information including all low-energy potential-energy curves.

  • Photodissociation of Bromobenzene, Dibromobenzene, and 1,3,5-Tribromobenzene
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 120:14, s. 6502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantum chemical calculations have been performed on the ground state and several low-lying excited states of bromobenzene, ortho-, meta-, and para-dibromobenzene, and 1,3,5-tribromobenzene using high-level ab initio and hybrid density-functional methods. Experimental observations of ultrafast predissociation in these molecules are clarified from extensive theoretical information about all low-energy potential-energy curves together with symmetry arguments. The intriguing observation that o- and m-dibromobenzene have two ultrafast predissociation channels while bromobenzene, p-dibromobenzene, and 1,3,5-tribromobenzene only have one such channel is explained from the calculated potential-energy curves. These show that the lowering of point-group symmetry from C2v to Cs along the main photodissociation reaction coordinate, which only occurs in o- and m-dibromobenzene, opens up a new predissociation channel. Dynamical quantum simulations based on the calculated potential-energy curves are used to estimate the coupling strength at the intersystem crossing point in bromobenzene.

  • Theoretical Study of the Fast Photodissociation Channels of the Monohalobenzenes
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry A. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1089-5639 .- 1520-5215. ; 108:2339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited state properties of fluorobenzene, chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, and iodobenzene have been investigated theoretically using multireference CASSCF and CASPT2 methods. Experimentally, chlorobenzene and bromobenzene are known to exhibit one fast dissociation channel, whereas iodobenzene exhibits two fast dissociation channels. The calculations indicate that the chlorobenzene, the bromobenzene, and the slower iodobenzene dissociation channels are due to intersystem crossings from a bound (,*) singlet excited state to a repulsive (n,*) triplet excited state. The faster iodobenzene dissociation channel is instead found to be caused by a direct dissociation of an antibonding (n,*) singlet excited state. The CASPT2 calculations predict that the onset of fluorobenzene photodissociation should occur around 196 nm, with a single time constant longer than 1 ns. CASSCF geometries and accurate MSCASPT2 calculated vertical excitation energies are presented for the ground state as well as the first excited singlet and triplet states of all the monohalobenzenes.

  • Theoretical Study of the Photodissociation of Low Lying Excited States of Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Molecular Physics. ; 102:2575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to explain recent photofragmentation experiments of hydrogen peroxide, the vertical excitation energies, potential-energy curves and surfaces, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and transition moments for a number of low lying excited states were calculated. The accessibility of different photodissociation channels for different excitation wavelengths was discussed, on the basis of the calculated results.

  • Magnetron sputtered epitaxial single-phase Ti3SiC2 thin films
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 81:5, s. 835-837
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis and characterization of epitaxial single-crystalline Ti3SiC2 films (Mn + 1AXn-phase). Two original deposition techniques are described, (i) magnetron sputtering from Ti3SiC2 compound target and (ii) sputtering from individual titanium and silicon targets with co-evaporated C60 as carbon source. Epitaxial Ti3SiC2 films of single-crystal quality were grown at 900 °C with both techniques. Epitaxial TiC(111) deposited in situ on MgO(111) by Ti sputtering using C60 as carbon source was used to nucleate the Ti3SiC2 films. The epitaxial relationship was found to be Ti3SiC2(0001)//TiC(111)//MgO(111) with the in-plane orientation Ti3SiC2[100]//TiC[101]//MgO[101].
