  • Testing an oral assessment guide during chemotherapy treatmen in a Swedish care setting : a pilot study
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 8:2, s. 150-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oral complications are common in patients with haematological malignancies who undergo chemotherapy treatment. A pilot study including 16 haematological patients was carried out to evaluate the oral status using an Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) and to test the reliability of the OAG. The oral assessments were made daily by registered nurses at a Department of Internal Medicine in Sweden. Once a week a dental hygienist made the oral assessments independent of the registered nurses in order to provide data for calculations of inter-rater reliability. All patients had varying degrees of alterations in the oral cavity, especially in the mucous membranes, teeth/dentures and gums. The inter-rater agreement between the nurses and the dental hygienist was good for saliva and swallow, and moderate for voice and gums. Assessments to detect alterations in the oral cavity afford the opportunity for early and individualized interventions and may decrease the risk of oral infections. It is necessary to train the nurses to ensure high levels of reliability in the oral assessments. The OAG seems to be a reliable and clinical useful tool for assessing the oral cavity status and determining changes.

  • High prevalence of Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in patients with cardiovascular disease and in middle-aged blood donors.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0022-1899 .- 1537-6613. ; 178:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) demonstrated the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae-specific DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). PBMC samples were obtained from 103 consecutive patients (62 male, 41 female) aged 22-85 years (mean, 64) admitted for coronary angiography because of suspected coronary heart disease and from 52 blood donors (43 male, 9 female) aged 40-64 years (mean, 49). Of the 101 evaluable patients, 60 (59%) were identified by nPCR assay as C. pneumoniae DNA carriers; C. pneumoniae-specific microimmunofluorescence (MIF) serology confirmed exposure to the bacterium in 57 (95%) of the 60 nPCR-positive patients. Among the 52 blood donors, the nPCR assay identified 24 (46%) C. pneumoniae DNA carriers, all of whom were positive by C. pneumoniae-specific serology. Thirty-two patients (32%) and 23 blood donors (44%) were MIF antibody-positive but repeatedly nPCR-negative; Bartonella henselae- or Bartonella quintana-specific antibodies were not detected among any of these subjects. In this study, C. pneumoniae DNA was common in PBMC of patients with coronary heart disease and in middle-aged blood donors.

  • Staten som marknadens salt : en studie i institutionsbildning, kollektivt handlande och tidig välfärdspolitik på en strategisk varumarknad i övergången mellan merkantilism och liberalism 1720-1862
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation studies public institutional arrangements on the Swedish salt market 1720-1862. Crucial issues are how an why these arrangements emerged and were changed as well as they were used. The arrangements were erected in order to realize economic and social goals. In this respect, the policy persued by the Swedish government differed from those of most other governments, where policies concerning salt primarily meant tax policies. Government policies in Sweden were firstly external and had a long-term orientation. The aim was to import as much salt as possible to Sweden. The government also pursued a short-term policy in order to cope with short-term shorages. Overall, these policies were successful. Contrary to what has been stated in earlier Swedish research, the protectionist shipping policies did not lead to shortages of salt and high saltprices. Instead, the Swedish shipping and freight manufacture was stimulated, and Sweden became independent of foreign merchant fleets. The mercantilist aim of building a large merchant fleet, independent of potential enemy nations, was achieved without any negative effects on prices or supply on the Swedish salt market.Shortages of salt were not caused by a generally low yearly supply of salt. On the contrary, Sweden consistently had a surplus of salt and re-exported every year salt to other countries. The shortages of salt was rather regional and temporary, due to unexpected shocks on the supply side (wars, buccaneering, shipwrecks, persistent head winds, crises of production) and on the demand side (abundant fishing, cattle diseases and forced slaughter etc.). Costly and slow transports and communication meant that unexpected shortages could not be solved through trade. To solve these problems different institutional arrangements were created. These arrangements emerged in an evolutionary process of institutional change characterized by significant random elements. Severe shortages caused large changes in relative prices which acted as triggering factors in the process of institutional formation.Three more elaborated institutional arrangements having welfare purpuses were established, but disappeared in a rather short time. In 1774 a system of State Salt Stores were established in all staple towns. This arrangement proved to be very efficient as an insurance system, and the Salt Stores were frequently used to avert temporary shortages until new cargos of salt had arrived. The active state policy was a prerequisite for the markets to function satisfactory under mercantilism. But public stockpiling came to an end because the need for this insurance services diminished. But new technologies in saltproduction and shipping, increases in security and improved communications, a more efficiently-functioning market structure caused a significant long run decline i saltprices in relation to other prices and wages. Consequently, the need for public arrangements on the saltmarket decreased.

  • Real interpolation for divisible cones
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. - 0013-0915 .- 1464-3839. ; 42:2, s. 285-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a general cone of positive functions to satisfy the Decomposition Property (DP) introduced in [5] and connect the results with the theory of interpolation of cones introduced by Sagher [9]. One of our main result states that if Q satisfies DP or equivalently is divisible, then for the quasi-normed spaces E0 and E1, According to this formula, it yields that the interpolation theory for divisible cones can be easily obtained from the classical theory

  • S-divisibility property and a Holmstedt type formula
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Approximation Theory. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9045 .- 1096-0430. ; 98:1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given a conePof positive functions and an operatorS: →Pwith an additive group, we extend the concept ofK-divisibility to get some new formulas for theK-functional of finite families of lattices. Applications are given in the setting of rearrangement invariant spaces and weighted Lorentz spaces. As a consequence of our results, we also obtain a generalized Holmstedt formula due to Asekritova

  • Nonlinear mechanical behaviour and analysis of wood and fibre materials
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Computers & Structures. - 0045-7949. ; 72:4-5, s. 459-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanical behaviour of wood was studied from a micro up to a macro level. Wood is a cellular material possessing a high degree of anisotropy. Like other cellular solids, it often exhibits a highly nonlinear stress–strain behaviour. In the present study the mechanical properties of the cellular structure of wood are characterized and modelled, the irregular cell shape, the anisotropic layered structure of the cell walls and the periodic variations in density being taken into account. The continuum properties were derived by use of a homogenization procedure and the finite element method. Stiffness and shrinkage properties determined by this procedure are presented and are compared with measured data. The constitutive properties thus determined at various structural levels can be used in numerical simulations of the behaviour of wood in different industrially related areas. One such area is that of the refining process in mechanical pulp manufacture. Simulations of the deformation and fracturing of wood specimens loaded under conditions similar to those found in the refining process are presented. The numerical and experimental results obtained are compared.
