  • Physics with e + e - linear colliders
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - 0370-1573. ; 299:1, s. 1-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physics potential of e + e - linear colliders is summarized in this report. These machines are planned to operate in the first phase at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV, before being scaled up to about 1 TeV. In the second phase of the operation, a final energy of about 2 TeV is expected. The machines will allow us to perform precision tests of the heavy particles in the Standard Model, the top quark and the electroweak bosons. They are ideal facilities for exploring the properties of Higgs particles, in particular in the intermediate mass range. New vector bosons and novel matter particles in extended gauge theories can be searched for and studied thoroughly. The machines provide unique opportunities for the discovery of particles in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the spectrum of Higgs particles, the supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, and of the matter particles. High precision analyses of their properties and interactions will allow for extrapolations to energy scales close to the Planck scale where gravity becomes significant. In alternative scenarios, i.e. compositeness models, novel matter particles and interactions can be discovered and investigated in the energy range above the existing colliders up to the TeV scale. Whatever scenario is realized in Nature, the discovery potential of e + e - linear colliders and the high precision with which the properties of particles and their interactions can be analyzed, define an exciting physics program complementary to hadron machines.

  • Summary report of the TD-3 workshop: characterization of 83 antibodies against prostate-specific antigen
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Tumor Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1423-0380 .- 1010-4283. ; 20:Suppl. 1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Twelve research groups participated in the ISOBM TD-3 Workshop in which the reactivity and specificity of 83 antibodies against prostate-specific antigen (PSA) were investigated. Using a variety of techniques including cross-inhibition assays, Western blotting, BIAcore, immunoradiometric assays and immunohistochemistry, the antibodies were categorized into six major groups which formed the basis for mapping onto two- and three-dimensional (2-D and 3-D) models of PSA. The overall findings of the TD-3 Workshop are summarized in this report. In agreement with all participating groups, three main antigenic domains were identified: free PSA-specific epitopes located in or close to amino acids 86-91; discontinuous epitopes specific for PSA without human kallikrein (hK2) cross-reactivity located at or close to amino acids 158-163; and continuous or linear epitopes shared between PSA and hK2 located close to amino acids 3-11. In addition, several minor and partly overlapping domains were also identified. Clearly, the characterization of antibodies from this workshop and the location of their epitopes on the 3-D model of PSA illustrate the importance of selecting appropriate antibody pairs for use in immunoassays. It is hoped that these findings and the epitope nomenclature described in this TD-3 Workshop are used as a standard for future evaluation of anti-PSA antibodies.

  • Computer-Aided Planning of Production, Working and Residential Environments
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-8141 .- 1872-8219. ; 17:1, s. 59-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses a computer-aided planning methodology and its applicability for planning of industrial production and working environments as well as for planning of residential and working environments for the differently abled. The methodology has been developed and evaluated in six case studies in mechanical industries and in six case studies related to adaptations for the differently abled. The results from the case studies indicate that computer-supported modelling and visualisation may serve as a common and efficient language facilitating communication about multifaceted environmental planning issues. The methodology is a cost-effective way of demonstrating layout ideas and testing dynamic activities like manufacturing and transportation. Corporate groups comprising people involved in, or affected by, development work seem to be a fruitful approach for cooperation, one which enhances learning and creativity. Such groups may be a proper forum for the dissemination of information, exchange of opinions, utilisation of both expert and lay experiences, and for public testing of current reality or future plans in such a way that mutual understanding between different professional categories is increased, hence promoting internal commitment.

  • Binding of [3H]-5-hydroxytryptamine to human coronary artery and bypass graft vessels
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Cardiovascular Research. - 1755-3245. ; 31:5, s. 800-806
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) has a wide range of vascular effects mediated via specific receptors and it has been suggested to be a mediator in ischemic heart disease. The aim of the present study was to localise the 5-HT receptors within the vessel wall. METHODS: Epicardial coronary arteries obtained from patients undergoing cardiac transplantation, internal mammary arteries from heart donors and saphenous veins from patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery, were sectioned and incubated with [3H]-5-HT for in vitro receptor autoradiography. RESULTS: Microscopic analysis of high resolution autoradiographic images revealed a similar pattern of [3H]-5-HT binding in epicardial coronary and internal mammary artery, where it predominated in the lamina muscularis. In the saphenous vein, binding increased towards the adventitia which showed dense, displaceable binding to the vasa vasorum as well as to nerve-like structures, from which binding was only partially displaced. Computer-assisted densitometric analysis of low resolution autoradiographs revealed a high degree of specific binding to all vessels examined. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of the [3H]-5-HT binding is different in the saphenous vein compared to epicardial coronary and internal mammary artery. The dense binding to vasa vasorum in the saphenous vein suggests a role for 5-HT in closure of these nutrient vessels, which could contribute to the formation of atherosclerotic changes in saphenous vein grafts.

  • Breakdown of the independent particle approximation in high-energy photoionization
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007. ; 78:24, s. 4553-4556
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The independent particle approximation is shown to break down for the photoionization of both inner and outer nl (l > 0) electrons of all atoms, at high enough energy, owing to interchannel interactions with the nearby ns photoionization channels. The effect is illustrated for Ne 2p in the 1 keV photon energy range through a comparison of theory and experiment. The implications for x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of molecules and condensed matter are discussed.

  • Beyond the dipole approximation: angular-distribution effects in valence photoemission
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - 0953-4075. ; 30:21, s. L727-L733
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Angular distributions of valence photoelectrons showing effects due to highermultipole photon interactions have been measured for the first time. Neon 2s and 2p photoemission exhibits effects beyond the dipole approximation throughout the 250 to 1200 eV photon-energy range studied. The results suggest that any photoemission experiment, on any sample, can be affected at relatively low photon energies, pointing to a general need for caution in interpreting angle-resolved-photoemission measurements.

  • Community education for cardiovascular disease prevention. Morbidity and mortality results from the Minnesota Heart Health Program
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Epidemiology. - 0002-9262. ; 144:4, s. 351-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Minnesota Heart Health Program was a community trial of cardiovascular disease prevention methods that was conducted from 1980 to 1990 in three Upper Midwestern communities with three matched comparison communities. A 5- to 6-year intervention program used community-wide and individual health education in an attempt to decrease population risk. A major hypothesis was that the incidence of validated fatal and nonfatal coronary heart disease and stroke in 30- to 74-year-old men and women would decline differentially in the education communities after the health promotion program was introduced. This hypothesis was investigated using mixed-model regression. The intervention effect was modeled as a series of annual departures from a linear secular trend after a 2-year lag from the start of the intervention program. In the education communities, 2,394 cases of coronary heart disease and 818 cases of stroke occurred, with 2,526 and 739 cases, respectively, being seen in the comparison communities. The overall decline in coronary heart disease incidence was 1.8 percent per year in men (p = 0.03) and 3.6 percent per year in women (p = 0.007). For stroke, there were no significant secular trends. The authors recently published findings showing minimal effects of sustained intervention on risk factor levels. In the current report, there was no evidence of a significant intervention effect on morbidity or mortality, either for coronary heart disease or for stroke.
