  • Symposium in memory of Professor Inga Marie Nilsson
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Haemophilia. - : Wiley. - 1351-8216. ; 7:4, s. 401-410
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professor Inga Marie Nilsson (1923-99) was a pioneer in the field of bleeding and thrombo-embolic disorders and made several major scientific contributions during her career. To honour her memory, colleagues from all over the world were invited to cover several aspects of haemostasis by giving state-of-the-art lectures at an international symposium in Malmö on September 22-23, 2000, chaired by Professors Lou Aledort and Erik Berntorp. Colleagues of Professor Nilsson in Malmö gave a short introduction to each topic. A short review of the meeting will be presented.

  • The Odin satellite - I. Radiometer design and test
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 402:3, s. L27-L34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Sub-millimetre and Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) is the main instrument on the Swedish, Canadian, Finnish and French spacecraft Odin. It consists of a 1.1 metre diameter telescope with four tuneable heterodyne receivers covering the ranges 486-504 GHz and 541-581 GHz, and one fixed at 118.75 GHz together with backends that provide spectral resolution from 150 kHz to 1 MHz. This Letter describes the Odin radiometer, its operation and performance with the data processing and calibration described in Paper II.

  • Gradient echo imaging of flowing hyperpolarized nuclei : theory and phantom studies on 129Xe dissolved in ethanol
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Magnetic Resonance. - 1090-7807 .- 1096-0856. ; 159:1, s. 68-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of flip angle and flow velocity on the signal intensity achieved when imaging a hyperpolarized substance with a spoiled gradient echo sequence was investigated. The study was performed both theoretically and experimentally using hyperpolarized xenon dissolved in ethanol. Analytical expressions regarding the optimal flip angle with respect to signal and the corresponding signal level are presented and comparisons with thermally polarized substances are made. Both experimentally and theoretically, the optimal flip angle was found to increase with increasing flow velocity. Numerical calculations showed that the velocity dependence of the signal differs between the cases of hyperpolarized and thermally polarized substances.

  • Perfusion assessment with bolus differentiation : a technique applicable to hyperpolarized tracers
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0740-3194 .- 1522-2594. ; 52:5, s. 51-1043
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new technique for assessing tissue blood flow using hyperpolarized tracers, based on the fact that the magnetization of a hyperpolarized substance can be destroyed permanently, is described. Assessments of blood flow with this technique are inherently insensitive to arterial delay and dispersion, and allow for quantification of the transit time and dispersion in the arteries that supply the investigated tissue. Renal cortical blood flow was studied in six rabbits using a 13C-labeled compound (2-hydroxyethylacrylate) that was polarized by the parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) technique. The renal cortical blood flow was estimated to be 5.7/5.4 +/- 1.6/1.3 ml/min per milliliter of tissue (mean +/- SD, right/left kidney), and the mean transit time and dispersion in the renal arteries were determined to be 1.47/1.42 +/- 0.07/0.07 s and 1.78/1.93 +/- 0.40/0.42 s2, respectively.

  • Echo-planar MR imaging of dissolved hyperpolarized 129Xe : Potential for MR angiography
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - : SAGE Publications. - 0284-1851 .- 1600-0455. ; 43:5, s. 60-455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The feasibility of hyperpolarized 129Xe for fast MR angiography (MRA) was evaluated using the echo-planar imaging (EPI) technique.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Hyperpolarized Xe gas was dissolved in ethanol, a carrier agent with high solubility for Xe (Ostwald solubility coefficient 2.5) and long relaxation times. The dissolved Xe was injected as a bolus into a flow phantom where the mean flow velocity was 15 cm/s. Ultrafast EPI images with 44 ms scan time were acquired of the flowing bolus and the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) were measured.RESULTS: The relaxation times of hyperpolarized Xe in ethanol were measured to T1=160+/-11 s and T2 approximately 20 s. The resulting images of the flowing liquid were of reasonable quality and had an SNR of about 70.CONCLUSION: Based on the SNR of the obtained Xe EPI images, it was estimated that rapid in vivo MRA with 129Xe may be feasible, provided that an efficient, biologically acceptable carrier for Xe can be found and polarization levels of more than 25% can be achieved in isotopically enriched 129Xe.

  • Physiological evaluation of a new quantitative SPECT method measuring regional ventilation and perfusion
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985). - : American Physiological Society. - 8750-7587 .- 1522-1601. ; 96:3, s. 1127-1136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have developed a new quantitative single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) method that uses 113mIn-labeled albumin macroaggregates and Technegas (99mTc) to estimate the distributions of regional ventilation and perfusion for the whole lung. The multiple inert-gas elimination technique (MIGET) and whole lung respiratory gas exchange were used as physiological evaluations of the SPECT method. Regional ventilation and perfusion were estimated by SPECT in nine healthy volunteers during awake, spontaneous breathing. Radiotracers were administered with subjects sitting upright, and SPECT images were acquired with subjects supine. Whole lung gas exchange of MIGET gases and arterial Po2 and Pco2 gases was predicted from estimates of regional ventilation and perfusion. We found a good agreement between measured and SPECT-predicted exchange of MIGET and respiratory gases. Correlations ( r2) between SPECT-predicted and measured inert-gas excretions and retentions were 0.99. The method offers a new tool for measuring regional ventilation and perfusion in humans.

  • Nurr1-RXR heterodimers mediate RXR ligand-induced signaling in neuronal cells
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Genes & development. - : Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. - 0890-9369 .- 1549-5477. ; 17:24, s. 3036-3047
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The retinoid X receptor (RXR) is essential as a common heterodimerization partner of several nuclear receptors (NRs). However, its function as a bona fide receptor for endogenous ligands has remained poorly understood. Such a role would depend on the existence of RXR activating ligands in vivo and on the ability of such ligands to influence relevant biological functions. Here we demonstrate the presence of endogenous RXR ligands in the embryonic central nervous system (CNS) and show that they can activate heterodimers formed between RXR and the orphan NR Nurr1 in vivo. Moreover, RXR ligands increase the number of surviving dopaminergic cells and other neurons in a process mediated by Nurr1-RXR heterodimers. These results provide evidence for a role of Nurr1 as a ligand-independent partner of RXR in its function as a bona fide ligand-activated NR. Finally, our findings identify RXR-Nurr1 heterodimers as a potential target in the treatment of neurodegenerative disease.
