  • Heating, current drive and energetic particle studies on JET in preparation of ITER operation
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 43:3, s. 202-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper summarizes the recent work on JET in the three areas of heating, current drive and energetic particles. The achievements have extended the possibilities of JET, have a direct connection to ITER operation and provide new and interesting physics. Toroidal rotation profiles of plasmas heated far off axis with little or no refuelling or momentum input are hollow with only small differences on whether the power deposition is located on the low field side or on the high field side. With LH current drive the magnetic shear was varied from slightly positive to negative. The improved coupling (through the use of plasma shaping and CD4) allowed up to 3.4 MW of PLH in internal transport barrier (ITB) plasmas with more than 15 MW of combined NBI and ICRF heating. The q-profile with negative magnetic shear and the ITB could be maintained for the duration of the high heating pulse (8 s). Fast ions have been produced in JET with ICRF to simulate alpha particles: by using third harmonic He-4 heating, beam injected He-4 at 120 kV were accelerated to energies above 2 MeV taking advantage of the unique capability of JET to use NBI with 4 He and to confine MeV class ions. ICRF heating was used to replicate the dynamics of alpha heating and the control of an equivalent Q = 10 `burn' was simulated.

  • Structural and mechanical properties of diamond-like carbon films deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology. A. Vacuum, Surfaces, and Films. - : American Vacuum Society. - 0734-2101 .- 1520-8559. ; 21:4, s. 851-859
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A systematic study of physical properties of sputter-deposited DLC films was performed as a function of flux ratio and ion energy. The energy and flux ions and neutral atoms impinging on the surface of the growing films were deduced from Langmuir probe measurements and theoretical calculations. The bombardment of growing films by the energetic particles led to changes in microstructure and mechanical properties. Results suggest that the presence of defective graphite formed by subplanted C and Ar atoms is the dominant influence on the mechanical properties of the DLC films.

  • Thermal stability of carbon nitride thin films
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Research. - 0884-2914 .- 2044-5326. ; 16:11, s. 3188-3201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thermal stability of carbon nitride films, deposited by reactive direct current magnetron sputtering in N-2 discharge, was studied for postdeposition annealing temperatures T-A up to 1000 degreesC. Films were grown at temperatures of 100 degreesC (amorphous structure) and 350 and 550 degreesC (fullerenelike structure) and were analyzed with respect to thickness, composition, microstructure, bonding structure, and mechanical properties as a function of T-A and annealing time. All properties investigated were found to be stable for annealing up to 300 degreesC for long times (> 48 h). For higher T-A, nitrogen is lost from the films and graphitization takes place. At T-A = 500 degreesC the graphitization process takes up to 48 h while at T-A = 900 degreesC it takes less than 2 min. A comparison on the evolution of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and Raman spectra during annealing shows that for T-A > 800 degreesC, preferentially pyridinelike N and -C equivalent toN is lost from the films, mainly in the form of molecular N-2 and C2N2, while N substituted in graphite is preserved the longest in the structure. Films deposited at the higher temperature exhibit better thermal stability, but annealing at temperatures a few hundred degrees Celsius above the deposition temperature for long times is always detrimental for the mechanical properties of the films.

  • Localized bulk electron heating with ICRF mode conversion in the JET tokamak
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 44:1, s. 33-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ion cyclotron resonance frequencies (ICRF) mode conversion has been developed for localized on-axis and off-axis bulk electron heating on the JET tokamak. The fast magnetosonic waves launched from the low-field side ICRF antennas are mode-converted to short-wavelength waves on the high-field side of the He-3 ion cyclotron resonance layer in D and He-4 plasmas and subsequently damped on the bulk electrons. The resulting electron power deposition, measured using ICRF power modulation, is narrow with a typical full-width at half-maximum of approximate to30 cm (i.e. about 30% of the minor radius) and the total deposited power to electrons comprises at least up to 80% of the applied ICRF power. The ICRF mode conversion power deposition has been kept constant using He-3 bleed throughout the ICRF phase with a typical duration of 4-6 s, i.e. 15-40 energy confinement times. Using waves propagating in the counter-current direction minimizes competing ion damping in the presence of co-injected deuterium beam ions.

  • Dust mode in collisionally dominated complex plasmas with particle drift
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0093-3813 .- 1939-9375. ; 32:2, s. 613-616
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments with flow of microparticles were conducted in a de discharge. A sharp threshold in the neutral gas pressure for the onset of an unstable low-frequency dust wave mode was observed. Highly space- and time-resolved measurements of the microparticle flow combined with probe measurements of the plasma parameters have allowed detailed comparison with a theoretical model. The model demonstrates good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experimental results providing accurate estimates of the particle charge.

  • Experimental determination of dust-particle charge in a discharge plasma at elevated pressures
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 93:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The charge of dust particles is determined experimentally in a bulk dc discharge plasma in the pressure range 20-100 Pa. The charge is obtained by two independent methods: one based on an analysis of the particle motion in a stable particle flow and another on an analysis of the transition of the flow to an unstable regime. Molecular-dynamics simulations of the particle charging for conditions similar to those of the experiment are also performed. The results of both experimental methods and the simulations demonstrate good agreement. The charge obtained is several times smaller than predicted by the collisionless orbital motion theory, and thus the results serve as an experimental indication that ion-neutral collisions significantly affect particle charging.
