  • Electrical detection of nucleotides via nanopores in a hybrid graphene/h-BN sheet
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2040-3364 .- 2040-3372. ; 9:6, s. 2207-2212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Designing the next generation of solid-state biosensors requires developing detectors which can operate with high precision at the single-molecule level. Nano-scaled architectures created in two-dimensional hybrid materials offer unprecedented advantages in this regard. Here, we propose and explore a novel system comprising a nanopore formed within a hybrid sheet composed of a graphene nanoroad embedded in a sheet of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The sensitive element of this setup is comprised of an electrically conducting carbon chain forming one edge of the nanopore. This design allows detection of DNA nucleotides translocating through the nanopore based on the current modulation signatures induced in the carbon chain. In order to assess whether this approach is feasible to distinguish the four different nucleotides electrically, we have employed density functional theory combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Our findings show that the current localized in the carbon chain running between the nanopore and h-BN is characteristically modulated by the unique dipole moment of each molecule upon insertion into the pore. Through the analysis of a simple model based on the dipole properties of the hydrogen fluoride molecule we are able to explain the obtained findings.

    • Installation: Technique: Microscopic Photography + Digital Printing, 3D Printing Material: Paper, Acrylic: Vero White, mounted on metal Size: 49,5x24,5x3,5cm Year: 2017-2018 “I am dreaming since a long time, to observe nature from “within”. I have an interest in observing how nature is building structure and form, and how the internal cell con¬struction of plants, create their overall form. I have been searching for different ways of documenting and mapping this inter-relationship as a designer and artist as an inspiration for new forms of textile expressions. Searching for new sustainable design approaches, which build on the strategy to base future design on form, growth and organizing principles of nature in order to reach long-time sustainability. These objects are an initial exploration of turning microscopic photography into 3-dimensioal objects. Starting point of investigation has been microscopic photography of plant cell structures. The plant samples, which have been studied are 3-dimensional, even they are extremely fine (8-15μm). Taking images of plant structures at the microscope turns a 3-dimensional object, into a 2-dimensional image. So how to turn a 2-dimensional image back into 3D? This is an observation and form study from 2D to 3D. Explored through 3D printing. Microscopes accessed at Biofilia and Chemarts Laboratories at Aalto University, Finland. Objects created with Object Connex 350 3D printer at Aalto University, Department of Design, Finland.” The installation was part of the international group exhibition “Garden of Eden” at the summer symposium Textile Kultur Haslach and the concurrent ETN (European Textile Network) Conference. The exhibition showed contemporary textile artists discussing the topic “Garden of Eden” in diverse ways, materials and techniques. A total of 100 works by artists from 34 nations were presented.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses two case studies colour flow and Colour Collage. These cases explore the visual effects of movement using coloured light as a continuous time-based medium in the field of textile design. They present new forms of instruments, textile instruments, interfaces which allow displaying light compositions inside textile surfaces. The textiles are based on woven structures integrating PMMA optical fibres, which are activated by RGB-LEDs and use a digital interface to realize light-emitting textile expressions. They explore in different ways the light emitting material, thereby not only creating new forms of physical objects, likewise introducing physical as well as nonphysical aspects of design expression – material expression, the light emitting fibres and the light as such. The projects propose new ways of thinking whilst designing with changeable material expressions. Light and Time, both used as physical and non-physical forms of material (optical fibres and light, programmed time duration and changing form of expression over time) create instruments (textile structure) and compositions (lighting sequences), fused into indivisible matter performing unique forms of expressions.

  • Generalizing the mean intercept length tensor for gray-level images
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Medical physics (Lancaster). - : American Association of Physicists in Medicine. - 0094-2405. ; 39:7, s. 4599-4612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The mean intercept length tensor is the most used technique to estimate microstructure orientation and anisotropy of trabecular bone. This paper proposes an efficient extension of this technique to gray-scale images based on a closed formulation of the mean intercept length tensor and a generalization using different angular convolution kernels. Methods: First, the extended Gaussian image is computed for the binary or gray-scale image. Second, the intercepts are computed for all possible orientations through an angular convolution with the half-cosine function. Finally, the tensor is computed by means of the covariance matrix. The complexity of the method is O(n + m) in contrast with O(nm) of traditional implementations, where n is the number of voxels in the image and m is the number of orientations used in the computations. The method is generalized by applying other angular convolution kernels instead of the half-cosine function. As a result, the anisotropy of the tensor can be controlled while keeping the eigenvectors intact. Results: The proposed extension to gray-scale yields accurate results for reliable computations of the extended Gaussian image and, unlike the traditional methodology, is not affected by artifacts generated by discretizations during the sampling of different orientations. Conclusions: Experiments show that the computations on both binary and gray-scale images are correlated, and that computations in gray-scale are more robust, enabling the use of the mean intercept length tensor to clinical examinations of trabecular bone. The use of kernels based on the von Mises-Fisher distribution is promising as the anisotropy can be adjusted with a parameter in order to improve its power to predict mechanical properties of trabecular bone.

  • Serum levels of the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen and hyaluronan during resolving and nonresolving posttransfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0036-5548 .- 1651-1980. ; 22:1, s. 11-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Serum levels of the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) and hyaluronan were analysed before and during the acute, recovery and chronic phases of non-A, non-B (NANB) posttransfusion hepatitis (PTH) in 13 patients. All patients were discovered during a prospective study on NANB PTH in patients undergoing open-heart surgery. 7/13 (54%) patients resolved their hepatitis within 6 months after onset, whereas 6/13 (46%) went on to chronic hepatitis. In 5 of these 6 patients a liver biopsy during the chronic phase of the hepatitis showed chronic active hepatitis in 2 and chronic persistent hepatitis in 3. During the acute NANB PTH phase the mean serum PIINP level rose significantly as compared to prehepatitis levels and to levels in a reference group not developing hepatitis. Neither PIIINP levels nor hyaluronan levels, however, could differentiate patients with resolving from patients with nonresolving hepatitis. These markers should, however, be further evaluated as potential markers for development of fibrosis/cirrhosis during chronic hepatitis.
