  • Boundary dimensions of social innovation : negotiating conflicts and compatibilities when developing a national agenda
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Innovation: The European Journal of Social Science Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1351-1610 .- 1469-8412. ; 30:2, s. 168-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to add to the existing knowledge on the complex institutional dynamics of negotiating conflicts and compatibilities in innovation processes that address societal challenges and social needs, this article scrutinizes the scientific and societal debate on the theoretical and practical application of “social innovation” by means of the concept “boundary object” linked to institutional theory. A participatory case study of the development of an R&I agenda for social innovation in Sweden, formulated through dialog between stakeholders from the public, private and non-profit sectors, is presented. The results show that the unpredictable, emergent, evolving and adaptable character of needs, challenges and solutions in social innovation processes is made more theoretically and practically manageable by acknowledging social innovation as a boundary object. This is since this concept, despite its ambiguous character, helps balance complexity and usefulness in a way that serves to expand existing knowledge on institutional dynamics.

  • One for all, or all for oneself? : Governance cultures in regional public transport planning
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 25:12, s. 2293-2308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to the fragmented organizational landscape characterizing public transport, it is important to study and explore how regional governance of public transport adapts to national institutional reforms. By employing the term ‘governance cultures’ to a comparative case study of regional public transport planning in Sweden, we contribute to theories of governance by cultural sensitization. Combining governance theory with cultural analysis, we apply a cultural perspective to understand the two cases. We conclude that public transport planning in the Stockholm region is defined by ‘negotiations’ between stakeholders, whereas in the Västra Götaland region it is characterized by a governance culture of ‘collaboration’. The evidence from our case studies emphasizes the importance of understanding local governance practices as situated in cultural contexts as well as of viewing governance cultures as an important factor affecting the purpose, degree and outcomes of collaboration in planning practices.

  • Transporting Inequalities: On Transport in Urban and Regional Inequalities
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite a surge in critical urban studies, the role of transport infrastructure and its material and virtual aspects is still underdeveloped in studies of urban and regional inequalities. Transport infrastructure involves processes of everyday mobility in and to the city, including accessibility to work, services and green areas. Moreover, transport infrastructure guides processes of urban and regional development and planning, where prevailing norms in relation to e.g. automobility continue to pose challenges to environmental sustainability. As such transport mediates power-relations between institutions (private/public), scales and groups. These relations are materialized in terms of spatial segregation and differentiated usages of urban space on the basis of e.g. gender, ethnicity and class. The aim of this session is to enhance our understanding of urban and regional inequalities by emphasizing the role of different aspects of transports and its associated infrastructure. We welcome contributions on the role of transport in urban and regional inequalities, both in regards to empirical studies and broader theoretical and methodological advances in the field.
