- Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems are one of the widely researched topics under Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), because they are seen as the most viable way to prevent the traffic accidents caused by involuntary lane departures from happening. Various methods and algorithms used for lane tracking to be used in LDW in the literature; however, most of them only track the lanes or the position of the vehicle inside the lane. This article introduces MonoSLAM based method for LDW design, assuming that the camera is moving in a previously unknown scene. While applying this method, a constant lateral velocity model for the vehicle is used, which assumes that the vehicle is exposed to undetermined Gaussian lateral accelerations. As the first output, the localization of the vehicle on the road is achieved. Moreover, the method is applied with a low cost webcam attached on a vehicle. Five control points for each lane is used to track the lanes and these control points are modelled as if they have a constant position. Detection is made with steerable filters exploiting the state covariance from EKF to make detection more robust. In addition to this, off-line experimental results are given for 200 frames. Results of lane slope on image plane compared with ground truth marked manually for performance benchmarking and localization estimation of a scenario similar to loop closure test is given.

- This paper addresses one of the pedagogical challenges that followed the presence of increasingly multinational student groups, particularly the increased diversity of academic backgrounds among students. Theoretically, this challenge can be understood as an encounter between different teaching and learning regimes (TLRs). TLR, coined by Trowler and Cooper (2002), implies a constellation of assumptions, rules, relationships, and practices regarding the conduct of higher education that colours academic staff members’ performance in their profession. It has become a widely used heuristic tool in the reflection process among university staff. It is shown in this paper that TLRs are not only a heuristic tool that can be applied in teacher reflection but may also be fruitfully applied in the classroom in student-teacher interaction. Consequently, we decided to bring the TLR into the classroom. The written student reflections constitute the empirical material that this analysis is based on. We approach these reflections as expressions of confessions of the Self, as laid out by Michel Foucault. We conclude that it is useful for the students to reflect upon TLR’s, but simultaneously, such an approach runs the risk of enhancing pedagogical and epistemological conformism at the neoliberal university.

- Direct metal laser sintering is a rapid manufacturing technique to make intricate and near net-shaped parts. An iron-based laser sintered metal was studied to evaluate its thermal fatigue properties. The test was performed using cylindrical specimens in a high power induction heating system equipped with a laser strain gauge for a contactless surface strain measurement. Initiation of thermal fatigue cracks occurred preferentially at pores and layer interfaces, while propagation of cracks followed along phase boundaries and thin inter-dendritic phases and showed an inter-granular fracture. By using the fundamental Fourier equation for heat conduction, the temperature cycle was modeled and calculated. A thermo elastic ideal plastic model was used to deduce the thermal stress based on surface strain experimentally measured. Finally, the temperature distribution, thermal stresses and mechanical strains were discussed with respect to thermal fatigue damage.

- Oxygen anion redox offers an effective strategy to enhance the energy density of layered oxide positive electrodes for sodium- and lithium-ion batteries. However, lattice oxygen loss and irreversible structural transformations over the first cycle may result in large voltage hysteresis, thereby impeding practical application. Herein, ribbon superstructure ordering of Li/transition-metal-ions was applied to suppress the voltage hysteresis combined with Ti-substitution to improve the cycling stability for P3-Na0.67Li0.2Ti0.15Mn0.65O2. When both cation and anion redox reactions are utilized, Na0.67Li0.2Ti0.15Mn0.65O2 delivers a reversible capacity of 172 mA h g(-1) after 25 cycles at 10 mA g(-1) between 1.6-4.4 V vs. Na+/Na. Ex-situ X-ray diffraction data reveal that the ribbon superstructure is retained with negligible unit cell volume expansion/contraction upon sodiation/desodiation. The performance as a positive electrode for Li-ion batteries was also evaluated and P3-Na0.67Li0.2Ti0.15Mn0.65O2 delivers a reversible capacity of 180 mA h g(-1) after 25 cycles at 10 mA g(-1) when cycled vs. Li+/Li between 2.0-4.8 V.

- BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The treatment of acquired aplastic anemia (AA) is based on allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and immunosuppressive therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of children and adults with AA treated in the last decade, and to determine whether results have improved in two sequential time periods,1991-1996 and 1997-2002. DESIGN AND METHODS: Two-thousands and seventy-nine consecutive patients with AA, classified according to first-line treatment: BMT (n=1567) or immunosuppressive therapy (n= 912), the patients for the two sequential time periods were studied. Analyses included variables related to patients, disease and transplant. RESULTS: The actuarial 10-year survival was 73% and 68% for BMT or immunosuppressive treatment, respectively (p=0.002). BMT outcome improved significantly with time (69% and 77%, p=001) for both matched sibling donor (MSD) (74% and 80%; p=0.003 ), alternative donor (38% and 65% p=0.0001), and was better in children (79% versus 68%, p<0.0001). Multivariate analysis: favorable predictors (p<0.001) were younger age, transplant beyond 1996, MSD, a short interval diagnosis-transplant , no irradiation. IS: no significant improvement over time (69% and 73% p=0.29). Survival was significantly better in children (81% versus 70%, p=0.001), especially in vSAA(83% versus 62%, p=0.0002). Combined IS was superior to single drug treatment (77% versus 62%, p=0.002). Multivariate analysis: significant predictors of survival: age > or =16 years (p=0.0009), longer interval between diagnosis -treatment (p=0.04), single drug versus combined IS (p=0.02). INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSIONS: Outcome has improved in subsets of AA patients: those receiving first- line BMT and children with vSAA treated with IS. Age remains a major predictor for both treatments. Early intervention is associated with a significantly better outcome and is strongly recommended, whatever the first-line therapy.
