  • Sense of Place and Place Attachment in Tourism
  • 2021
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Place is integral to tourism. In tourism, almost all issues can ultimately be traced back to human–place interactions and human–place relationships. Sense of place, also referred to as place attachment, topophilia, and community sentiment, has received significant attention in tourism studies because it both contributes to, and is affected by, tourism. This book, written by notable authors in the field, examines sense of place and place attachment in terms of a typology of sense of place/place attachment that includes genealogical/historical, narrative/cultural, economic, ideological, cosmological, and dynamic elements. Dimensions of place attachment such as place identity, place dependence, and affective attachment are discussed as well as place marketing, place making, and destination management.Complete with a range of illustrative international cases and examples ranging from Santa Claus to the importance of place in indigenous and traditional cultures, this book represents a substantial addition to knowledge on the inseparable relationship between tourism and place and will be of great interest to all upper-level students and researchers of Tourism.

  • The Triple Blow Effect : Retailing in an Era of Disasters and Pandemics - The Case of Christchurch, New Zealand
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 14:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the last two decades, the retail sector has experienced unprecedented upheaval, having severe implications for economic development and sustenance of traditional inner-city retail districts. In the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, this effect has been exacerbated by a series of earthquakes in 2010/2011 which destroyed much of the traditional retail precinct of the city. After extensive rebuild activity of the city's infrastructure, the momentum of retailers returning to the inner city was initially sluggish but eventually gathered speed supported by increased international visitation. In early 2020, the return to retail normality came to an abrupt halt after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses spending and transaction data to analyze the compounding impact of the earthquake's aftermath, shift to online shopping, and the retail disruption in the Christchurch central retail precinct because of COVID-19. The findings illustrate how consumers through their spending respond to different types of external shocks, altering their consumption patterns and retail mode (offline and online) to cope with an ever-changing retail landscape. Each event triggers different spending patterns that have some similarities but also stark differences, having implications for a sustainable and resilient retail industry in Christchurch. Implications for urban retail precinct development are also discussed.

  • Exploring CBD Retail Performance, Recovery and Resilience of a Smart City Following COVID-19
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 15:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The city of Christchurch, New Zealand, incurred significant damage due to a series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. The city had, by the late 2010s, regained economic and social normalcy after a sustained period of rebuilding and economic recovery. Through the concerted rebuilding effort, a modern central business district (CBD) with redesigned infrastructure and amenities was developed. The Christchurch rebuild was underpinned by a commitment of urban planners to an open and connected city, including the use of innovative technologies to gather, use and share data. As was the case elsewhere, the COVID-19 pandemic brought about significant disruptions to social and economic life in Christchurch. Border closures, lockdowns, trading limitations and other restrictions on movement led to changes in traditional consumer behaviors and affected the retail sector's resilience. In this study, we used CBD pedestrian traffic data gathered from various locations to predict changes in retail spending and identify recovery implications through the lens of retail resilience. We found that the COVID-19 pandemic and its related lockdowns have driven a substantive change in the behavioral patterns of city users. The implications for resilient retail, sustainable policy and further research are explored.

  • Airbnb and the sharing economy: Introduction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; 25:19, s. 3057-3067
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large share of growth in the sharing or platform economy is driven by peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation providers such as Airbnb. The literature argues for both positive and negative socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts emanating from the tourism and hospitality businesses and value chains that are dependent on AirBnB and other online platforms. These impacts are felt in terms of competition with more traditional business models (e.g. hotels, motels and B&Bs) and their influence on tourist and visitor flows as well as their spatial impacts that has led to substantial community opposition to accommodation providers that utilise Airbnb in some destinations. This introduction to the special issue on AirBnB and the sharing economy identifies several themes in the consumption and production of the sharing, peer-to-peer and platform economies on tourism at various scales, ranging from international networks, destinations and business, through to neighbourhoods and individuals. Although Airbnb provides the primary frame by which to investigate the relationships between the sharing economy and tourism and the implications of so-called disruptive innovation this introduction also notes some of the wider implications of the sharing and platform economy for people and places.

  • Destination transitions and resilience following trigger events and transformative moments
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Disasters and crises are increasingly seen as opportunities for transformation of the tourism system at various scales. From a resilience perspective, crises and disasters may act as trigger events for system change, sometimes described as the "disaster-reform hypothesis". An integrative framework informed by different fields is used to analyse the destination development pathways following the Kaik & omacr;ura earthquake in New Zealand. In addition to policy documents and media, the study draws on semi-structured interviews with 21 business owners and managers in the Kaik & omacr;ura region, an internationally recognised ecotourism destination. The findings show pathway competition, experimentation, scale effects and lock-in influencing transitions. The research identifies interactions between different actors at different levels of governance in shaping destination pathways post-disaster, with external political and economic actors having the most influence. Multiple levels of resilience chart a potentially more resilient destination. The study concludes that the range of potential destination pathways is constrained by decision-making at other scales, e.g. national policy settings and insurance coverage, that affect tourism businesses and destination decision-making. As a result, the notion of transformation should be understood as an essentially contested concept both within a destination and between destination stakeholders and those that operate at a national scale.

  • Emerging and future issues in halal hospitality and islamic tourism
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Routledge handbook of halal hospitality and islamic tourism. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2019. : Routledge. - 9781351367042 - 9781138557055 ; , s. 339-346
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter discusses emerging and potentially future issues in research on halal hospitality and Islamic tourism. Drawing on a wide range of research literature the chapter identifies several main themes: the longstanding issue of definitions with respect to halal and Islamic tourism and hospitality; the need to see Islamic pilgrimage as being much more than the hajj and umrah to becoming a wider engagement with the sacred as well as the desire of some locations to diversify economically via tourism; the need for a better understanding of the Muslim traveller; diversifying the range of tourism products and destinations that are examined from Islamic perspectives beyond accommodation and food services; developing an Islamic understanding of the impacts of tourism and the implications of an Islamic environmental paradigm; and, lastly, the need for greater reflexivity and criticality in undertaking studies of halal and Islamic tourism and hospitality including the research journey that is travelled. The chapter concludes by noting the importance of understanding the positionality of scholarship in relation to institutional interests and how this may contribute to the commodification of religious experience and the sacred.

  • Introduction to halal hospitality and islamic tourism
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Routledge handbook of halal hospitality and islamic tourism. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2019. : Routledge. - 9781351367042 - 9781138557055 ; , s. 1-18
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter introduces the reader to some of the issues surrounding religion, hospitality and the host-guest relationship in both a general religion and tourism context and specifically with respect to Islam. A major theme that is highlighted is the apparent tension between religious and commercial needs, including interpretation as to what hospitality actually means. This represents a major issue for formal halal service offerings given that the commercial imperative behind halal may not fully meet the sacred duty of providing hospitality for guests. The chapter also provides a brief introduction to the growing significance of Islamic tourism and hospitality and the definitional issues involved in the development, management and marketing of the area.
