  • Studies of bromine modified single-walled carbon nanotubes using photoelectron spectroscopy and density-functional theory
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Radiation Physics and Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-806X .- 1879-0895. ; 75:11, s. 1939-1942
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many applications based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) require chemical modification of carbon nanotube to optimize the functionalities of the device. In this contribution we discuss the properties of SWNTs immersed in a hydrobromic acid (HBr) solution. Changes of atomic and electronic structures of bromine modified SWNTs were investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). Spectra of SWNTs before and after immersion in the HBr solution exhibit different features. To understand the mechanism of interaction between SWNTs and bromine, we performed density-functional theory calculations to reveal the structural changes, adsorption energy and chemical bonding information of SWNTs interacting with bromine. In addition, based on the Gelius model, from the molecular orbitals (MOs), we calculated ultraviolet photoelectron spectra (UPS) of SWNTs with and without functionalizing and compared them with the experiment. The present study is a first step in the understanding of the functionalization mechanism of carbon nanotubes.

  • Safety and immunogenicity of a malaria vaccine, Plasmodium falciparum AMA-1/MSP-1 chimeric protein formulated in montanide ISA 720 in healthy adults
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : PLOS. - 1932-6203. ; 3:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The P. falciparum chimeric protein 2.9 (PfCP-2.9) consisting of the sequences of MSP1-19 and AMA-1 (III) is a malaria vaccine candidate that was found to induce inhibitory antibodies in rabbits and monkeys. This was a phase I randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation study to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the PfCP-2.9 formulated with a novel adjuvant Montanide ISA720. Fifty-two subjects were randomly assigned to 4 dose groups of 10 participants, each receiving the test vaccine of 20, 50, 100, or 200 microg respectively, and 1 placebo group of 12 participants receiving the adjuvant only.METHODS AND FINDINGS: The vaccine formulation was shown to be safe and well-tolerated, and none of the participants withdrew. The total incidence of local adverse events (AEs) was 75%, distributed among 58% of the placebo group and 80% of those vaccinated. Among the vaccinated, 65% had events that were mild and 15% experienced moderate AEs. Almost all systemic adverse reactions observed in this study were graded as mild and required no therapy. The participants receiving the test vaccine developed detectable antibody responses which were boosted by the repeated vaccinations. Sixty percent of the vaccinated participants had high ELISA titers (>1:10,000) of antigen-specific antibodies which could also recognize native parasite proteins in an immunofluorescence assay (IFA).CONCLUSION: This study is the first clinical trial for this candidate and builds on previous investigations supporting PfCP-2.9/ISA720 as a promising blood-stage malaria vaccine. Results demonstrate safety, tolerability (particularly at the lower doses tested) and immunogenicity of the formulation. Further clinical development is ongoing to explore optimizing the dose and schedule of the formulation to decrease reactogenicity without compromising immunogenicity.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) 2002SL0046; Controlled-Trials.com ISRCTN66850051 [66850051].

  • Nanoparticle-assisted DNA nanosensor
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: AOE 2007. - SHENZHEN : AOE. - 9780978921736 ; , s. 84-86
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a sensitive nanosensor based on a micro-fluidic chip and nanoparticles to detect low concentrations of DNA. The emission of CdSe/ZnS-QDs linked with single strand DNAs was quenched by gold nanoparticles linked with the complementary sequences after hybridization. Sensitively detected signal of DNA was obtained from a 100 mu m capillary.

  • Study on enhancement of fluorescence with gold nanorods
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Asia Optical Fiber Communication and Optoelectronic Exposition and Conference 2008. - : Optical Society of America. - 9781557528636
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enhancement of fluorescence of streptavidin conjugated with gold nanorods (GNRs) was observed. The impact of GNRs with different surface plasmon resonance bands and different concentrations to the efficiency of the fluorescence enhancement was studied.

  • Colloidal mesoporous silica nanoparticles with protoporphyrin IX encapsulated for photodynamic therapy
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biomedical Optics. - : SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng. - 1083-3668 .- 1560-2281. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX)-encapsulated mesoporous silica nanoparticles were synthesized, characterized, and utilized for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer. Silica encapsulation is relatively transparent for activated light and can protect the PpIX against denaturation induced by the extreme bioenvironment. The mesoporous silica can also ensure that the encapsulated PpIX can be well-contacted with oxygen, stimulated, and released. PpIX-encapsulated colloidal mesoporous silica nanoparticles were uptaken by tumor cells in vitro, and the effect of photon-induced toxicity was demonstrated after comparison with some control experiments. The surface of PpIX-encapsulated silica nanoparticles can be grafted with appropriate functionalized groups and conjugated with certain biomolecules for specific targeting.

  • Using plasmon-resonant gold nanorods as absorption contrast agents for optical coherence tomography
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 Asia Optical Fiber Communication and Optoelectronic Exposition and Conference, AOE 2008. - 9781557528636
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plasmon-resonant gold nanorods were used as high absorption contrast agents for optical coherence tomography (OCT). It is shown that nanorods imaging, with resonance wavelengths overlapping OCT source, can provide more information than conventional OCT images.
