  • Associations of Blood Absolute Neutrophil Count and Cytokines With Cognitive Function in Dementia-Free Participants : A Population-Based Cohort Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The journals of gerontology. Series A, Biological sciences and medical sciences. - 1079-5006 .- 1758-535X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The relationships of neutrophils and cytokines with cognitive dysfunction are poorly defined. We aimed to investigate the association of peripheral blood absolute neutrophil count (ANC) with cognitive function in older adults and to further explore the mediating role of serum cytokines in this association. Methods: This population-based cohort study included 1 666 dementia-free participants (age ≥60 years) derived from baseline examinations (March–September 2018) of the Multimodal Intervention to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China (MIND-China); of these, 1 087 participants completed follow-up examinations in October–December 2019. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess episodic memory, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function at the baseline and follow-up examinations. We used Mindray BC-6800 automated hematology analyzer to measure ANC and Meso Scale Discovery to measure serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and eotaxin-3.Results: The linear regression analysis of cross-sectional data at baseline (n = 1 666) suggested that increased ANC was significantly associated with a lower episodic memory z score (β coefficient: −0.149, 95% CI: −0.274 to −0.023) and lower long-delayed free recall z score (−0.216, −0.361 to −0.070). Serum IL-6 and eotaxin-3 could mediate 16.16% to 20.21% and 7.55% to 9.35%, respectively, of these associations. The analysis of longitudinal data (n = 1 087) showed a J-shaped relationship of ANC with decline in episodic memory z score (p for nonlinear = .049), and a U-shaped relationship between ANC and decline in long-delayed free recall z score (p for nonlinear = .043).Conclusions: Increased neutrophils are associated with poor cognitive performance and accelerated decline in episodic memory, and the cross-sectional association is partly mediated by serum cytokines.

  • Exosomal miR-532-5p induced by long-term exercise rescues blood–brain barrier function in 5XFAD mice via downregulation of EPHA4
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Aging Cell. - : Wiley. - 1474-9718 .- 1474-9726. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The breakdown of the blood–brain barrier, which develops early in Alzheimer's disease (AD), contributes to cognitive impairment. Exercise not only reduces the risk factors for AD but also confers direct protection against cognitive decline. However, the exact molecular mechanisms remain elusive, particularly whether exercise can liberate the function of the blood–brain barrier. Here, we demonstrate that long-term exercise promotes the clearance of brain amyloid-β by improving the function of the blood–brain barrier in 5XFAD mice. Significantly, treating primary brain pericytes or endothelial cells with exosomes isolated from the brain of exercised 5XFAD mice improves cell proliferation and upregulates PDGFRβ, ZO-1, and claudin-5. Moreover, exosomes isolated from exercised mice exhibit significant changes in miR-532-5p. Administration or transfection of miR-532-5p to sedentary mice or primary brain pericytes and endothelial cells reproduces the improvement of blood–brain barrier function. Exosomal miR-532-5p targets EPHA4, and accordingly, expression of EphA4 is decreased in exercised mice and miR-532-5p overexpressed mice. A specific siRNA targeting EPHA4 recapitulates the effects on blood–brain barrier-associated cells observed in exercised 5XFAD mice. Overall, our findings suggest that exosomes released by the brain contain a specific miRNA that is altered by exercise and has an impact on blood–brain barrier function in AD.

  • Corrosion performance of He + ion irradiated 304 L stainless steel made by laser powder bed fusion in simulated PWR water
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0010-938X. ; 206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The corrosion performance of irradiated 304 L processed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) in simulated primary water of pressurized water reactor was investigated. The oxide scales formed on He+ irradiated and unirradiated LPBF 304 L were compared between as-built and solution-annealed samples along with a conventionally rolled irradiated counterpart. The irradiation induced corrosion acceleration by forming slightly thicker duplex-layer films with loose the inner oxide layer was observed on the solution-annealed sample due to the fast diffusion paths provided by irradiation defects. A relatively dense film with a thinner thickness and more Cr enrichment in the inner scale revealed a better corrosion resistance in the as-built LPBF 304 L sample, which was attributed to the better irradiation resistance and the unique microstructure of ultrafine crystalline.

  • Graptolites as fossil geo-thermometers and source material of hydrocarbons: An overview of four decades of progress
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Earth-Science Reviews. - : Elsevier BV. - 0012-8252 .- 1872-6828. ; 200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thermal maturity of lower Paleozoic graptolite-bearing marine sediments, which host many hydrocarbon deposits worldwide, has long been difficult to determine due to the absence of wood-derived vitrinite particles for conventional vitrinite reflectance. In 1976, graptolite reflectance was introduced as a new indicator for organic maturity of these deposits and has been used since in many regional studies. The majority of these studies, however, were done on a limited sample set and a limited range of thermal maturity, which resulted in a number of controversial views concerning the usefulness of graptolite reflectance as an alternative paleothermal indicator and its correlation with vitrinite reflectance through various proxies. In this paper, we review previous studies and combine those analyses with new data to assess the physical and chemical characteristics of graptolite periderm with increasing thermal maturity. We conclude that graptolite random reflectance (GRor) is a better parameter for the thermal maturity assessment than graptolite maximum reflectance (GRomax) due to the better quality of available data. Combining published data with results of our study of both natural and heat-treated graptolites and vitrinite, we present a new correlation between GRor and equivalent vitrinite reflectance (EqVRo), as EqVRo = 0.99GRor + 0.08. Chemical composition of graptolite periderm is similar to vitrinite; graptolites are mainly kerogen Type II-III, are gas prone and have a substantial hydrocarbon potential. Lower Paleozoic graptolite-bearing organic-rich sediments are important shale gas source rocks and reservoirs globally and make a significant contribution to worldwide petroleum reserves

  • Transpolar Arcs During a Prolonged Radial Interplanetary Magnetic Field Interval
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 126:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transpolar arcs (TPAs) are believed to predominantly occur under northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions with their hemispheric asymmetry controlled by the Sun-Earth (radial) component of the IMF. In this study, we present observations of TPAs that appear in both the northern and southern hemispheres even during a prolonged interval of radially oriented IMF. The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16 and the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellites observed TPAs on the dawnside polar cap in both hemispheres (one TPA structure in the southern hemisphere and two in the northern hemisphere) during an interval of nearly earthward-oriented IMF on October 29, 2005. The southern hemisphere TPA and one of the northern hemisphere TPAs are associated with electron and ion precipitation and mostly sunward plasma flow (with shears) relative to their surroundings. Meanwhile, the other TPA in the northern hemisphere is associated with an electron-only precipitation and antisunward flow relative to its surroundings. Our observations indicate the following: (a) the TPA formation is not limited to northward IMF conditions; (b) the TPAs can be located on both closed field lines rooted in the polar cap of both hemispheres and open field lines connected to the northward field lines draped over one hemisphere of the magnetopause. We believe that the TPAs presented here are the result of both indirect and direct processes of solar wind energy transfer to the high-latitude ionosphere.

  • A strong mitigation scenario maintains climate neutrality of northern peatlands
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: One Earth. - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-3330 .- 2590-3322. ; 5:1, s. 86-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Northern peatlands store 300–600 Pg C, of which approximately half are underlain by permafrost. Climate warming and, in some regions, soil drying from enhanced evaporation are progressively threatening this large carbon stock. Here, we assess future CO2 and CH4 fluxes from northern peatlands using five land surface models that explicitly include representation of peatland processes. Under Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 2.6, northern peatlands are projected to remain a net sink of CO2 and climate neutral for the next three centuries. A shift to a net CO2 source and a substantial increase in CH4 emissions are projected under RCP8.5, which could exacerbate global warming by 0.21°C (range, 0.09–0.49°C) by the year 2300. The true warming impact of peatlands might be higher owing to processes not simulated by the models and direct anthropogenic disturbance. Our study highlights the importance of understanding how future warming might trigger high carbon losses from northern peatlands.

  • Analysis and Design of Partially Information- and Partially Parity-Coupled Turbo Codes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 69:4, s. 2107-2122
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we study a class of spatially coupled turbo codes, namely partially information- and partially parity-coupled turbo codes. This class of codes enjoy several advantages such as flexible code rate adjustment by varying the coupling ratio and the encoding and decoding architectures of the underlying component codes can remain unchanged. For this work, we first provide the construction methods for partially coupled turbo codes with coupling memory m and study the corresponding graph models. We then derive the density evolution equations for the corresponding ensembles on the binary erasure channel to precisely compute their iterative decoding thresholds. Rate-compatible designs and their decoding thresholds are also provided, where the coupling and puncturing ratios are jointly optimized to achieve the largest decoding threshold for a given target code rate. Our results show that for a wide range of code rates, the proposed codes attain close-to-capacity performance and the decoding performance improves with increasing the coupling memory. In particular, the proposed partially parity-coupled turbo codes have thresholds within 0.0002 of the BEC capacity for rates ranging from 1/3 to 9/10, yielding an attractive way for constructing rate-compatible capacity-approaching channel codes.

  • Generalized Spatially-Coupled Parallel Concatenated Codes With Partial Repetition
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 70:9, s. 5771-5787
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new class of spatially-coupled turbo-like codes (SC-TCs), dubbed generalized spatially coupled parallel concatenated codes (GSC-PCCs), is introduced. These codes are constructed by applying spatial coupling on parallel concatenated codes (PCCs) with a fraction of information bits repeated q times. GSC-PCCs can be seen as a generalization of the original spatially-coupled parallel concatenated codes proposed by Moloudi et al. [2]. To characterize the asymptotic performance of GSC-PCCs, we derive the corresponding density evolution equations and compute their decoding thresholds. The threshold saturation effect is observed and proven. Most importantly, we rigorously prove that the rate-R GSC-PCC ensemble with 2-state convolutional component codes achieves at least a fraction 1-R/R+q of the capacity of the binary erasure channel (BEC) for repetition factor q ≥ 2 and this multiplicative gap vanishes as q tends to infinity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first class of SC-TCs that are proven to be capacity-achieving. Further, the connection between the strength of the component codes, the decoding thresholds of GSC-PCCs, and the repetition factor is established. The superiority of the proposed codes with finite blocklength is exemplified by comparing their error performance with that of existing SC-TCs via computer simulations.
