- This article deals with issues related to theory/practice and professionals/layman in architectural competitions. The data is based from experience in Finland. Architectural competitions have been institutionalized since the end of the 19:th century and they are an important part of the architect’s profession. Despite this, there are few scientific studies made on this topic. Due to this, we hade done an Investigative survey in Finland.The article is based on interviews, studies of competition material and literature. A special follow-up has been made on the competitions held during the years of 1999 and 2000; to get a picture of to what degree the winning competition proposals have been implemented. Seven persons with first hand experience from competitions have been interviewed. They represent the architect’s organization, the arranger and the competitors.The presentation of the results from the completed interviews follows the different stages in the competition process. From the initial stage of bringing forward a competition programme for the task, through the judging of the entries into the final stage of presentation of an opinion from the jury. The task of the jury in architectural competitions is to find the best proposal among the entries. The judgement of the entries is a process where the jury appoint good proposals. Competence and consensus are two essential factors that make the jury feel comfortable in the final choice of a winner of an architectural competition.

- The presented report is a summary of the research program Quality in Architecture and Urban Planning. The aimed have been to develop concepts and theory regarding architecturalquality. ‘Quality’ is discussed by three different studies. The first is an analysis of quality criteriafor a Swedish architecture reward. Then architects’ views on quality management in the design processwere studied. The last study concerned debate on architecture in current daily press. Thechanging perspectives highlight the diversity of how ‘quality’ is perceived in the design and constructionprocess. The results are presented in five statements on ‘architectural quality’:1) The use of the concept can appear unclear and confusing,2) ‘Quality’ is an open and evaluating concept,3) The concept reflects a divide between architects and their customers,4) It is a value laden concept, as are the criteria used by professional practitioners judging the builtenvironment and5) Normative critique of architectures is based upon an external model, while interpreting critique isbased upon internal experience.
