  • Introduction : The greenest city?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Stockholm. - : Taylor & Francis.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • THE EUROPEAN UNION inaugurated the European Green Capital Award in 2010. The annual prize recognizes the consistent record of high environmental standards and commitment to ongoing and ambitious goals for further environmental improvement of one city within the European Union, which can then function as a role model to inspire and “promote best practice experiences in all other European cities” (European Green Capital, 2009). The first city to receive this award was Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

  • Polycentric spatial development : institutional challenges to intermunicipal cooperation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Jahrbuch für Regional Wissenschaft. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0173-7600 .- 1613-9836. ; 31:2, s. 155-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policies supporting a polycentric metropolitan spatial structure have been suggested as an effective way to achieve sustainable environmental, economic and social urban development. However, there are significant challenges to implementing a polycentric spatial strategy in practice. Metropolitan space is governed by many large and small municipalities and infrastructure investments are determined by local, regional and national authorities and private developers. Polycentric spatial strategies meet classic collective action problems since local costs and benefits are asymmetrical. Most metropolitan regions lack effective institutions for resolving social dilemmas and collective action challenges that could facilitate land use and transport policies supporting polycentric or other sustainable spatial strategies. This study of intermunicipal dialogue regarding the polycentric spatial strategy in the Stockholmregion suggests that cooperation for polycentric spatial development may in fact lead instead to a corridor development pattern.

  • Socialt kapital och innovation: ett rumsligt perspektiv” (Social capital and innovation: a spatial perspective)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - 0037-833X. ; 90:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our understanding of the relationship between innovative capacity, social ca-pital and the social dimension of sustainable development is still in its infan-cy. There is an extensive literature on innovation with a strong connection to theories of social capital, but only a few studies have examined the effects of social capital on innovation. We create and test two measurable variables that describe local innovative potential in order to contribute to deeper understan-ding of the link between innovation and social capital: business-related social capital related to place, and innovative policy potential in local communities. Our model for Swedish municipalities indicates that these two variables have a positive impact on firm innovation (measured by export value per capita) at the local level, but also that there may be differences between these relationships in urban and rural municipalities.

  • Sustainable Stockholm : Exploring Urban Sustainability in Europe's Greenest City
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable Stockholm provides a historical overview of Stockholms environmental development, and also discusses a number of cross-disciplinary themes presenting the urban sustainability work behind Stockholms unique position, and importantly the question of how well Stockholms practices can be exported and transposed to other places and contexts. By using the case of Stockholm as the pivot of discussions, Sustainable Stockholm investigates the core issues of sustainable urban environmental development and planning, in all their entanglements. The book shows how intersecting fields such as urban planning and architecture, traffic planning, land-use regulation, building, waste management, regional development, water management, infrastructure engineeringtogether and in combination-have contributed to making Stockholm Europes "greenest" city.
