  • Electroweak measurements in electron positron collisions at W-boson-pair energies at LEP

    • Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3 fb(-1) collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, 13 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 GeV to 209 GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant WW and ZZ production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in WW production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, m(w) and Gamma(w), the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B(W -> had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g(1)(Z), K-gamma and lambda(gamma), are determined to be: m(w) = 80.376 +/- 0.033 GeV Gamma(w) = 2.195 +/- 0.083 GeV B(W -> had) = 67.41 +/- 0.27% g(1)(Z) = 0.984(-0.020)(+0.018) K-gamma - 0.982 +/- 0.042 lambda(gamma) = 0.022 +/- 0.019.     • The electron and photon reconstruction and identification algorithms used by the DO Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider are described. The determination of the electron energy scale and resolution is presented. Studies of the performance of the electron and photon reconstruction and identification are summarized. The results are based on measurements of Z boson decay events of Z ee and Z gamma ll(i=e mu) collected in pp(over bar) collisions at a center- of- mass energy of 1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of up to10 fb(-1.)

    • The calibration of jet energy measured in the DO detector is presented, based on p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider, jet energies are measured using a sampling calorimeter composed of uranium and liquid argon as the passive and active media, respectively. This paper describes the energy calibration of jets performed with gamma+jet, Z+jet and dilet events, with jet transverse momentum p(T) > 6 GeV and pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar < 3.6, The corrections are measured separately for data and simulation, achieving a precision of 1.4-1.8% for jets in the central part of the calorimeter ancl up to 3.5% for the jets with pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar = 3.0. Specific corrections are extracted to enhance the description of jet energy in simulation and in particular of the effects due to the flavor of the parton originating the jet, correcting biases up to 3-4% in jets with low PT originating from gluons and up to 6-8% in jets from b quarks.     • Six DNA regions were evaluated as potential DNA barcodes for Fungi, the second largest kingdom of eukaryotic life, by a multinational, multilaboratory consortium. The region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 used as the animal barcode was excluded as a potential marker, because it is difficult to amplify in fungi, often includes large introns, and can be insufficiently variable. Three subunits from the nuclear ribosomal RNA cistron were compared together with regions of three representative protein-coding genes (largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, and minichromosome maintenance protein). Although the protein-coding gene regions often had a higher percent of correct identification compared with ribosomal markers, low PCR amplification and sequencing success eliminated them as candidates for a universal fungal barcode. Among the regions of the ribosomal cistron, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region has the highest probability of successful identification for the broadest range of fungi, with the most clearly defined barcode gap between inter- and intraspecific variation. The nuclear ribosomal large subunit, a popular phylogenetic marker in certain groups, had superior species resolution in some taxonomic groups, such as the early diverging lineages and the ascomycete yeasts, but was otherwise slightly inferior to the ITS. The nuclear ribosomal small subunit has poor species-level resolution in fungi. ITS will be formally proposed for adoption as the primary fungal barcode marker to the Consortium for the Barcode of Life, with the possibility that supplementary barcodes may be developed for particular narrowly circumscribed taxonomic groups.

    • DNA phylogenetic comparisons have shown that morphology-based species recognition often underestimates fungal diversity. Therefore, the need for accurate DNA sequence data, tied to both correct taxonomic names and clearly annotated specimen data, has never been greater. Furthermore, the growing number of molecular ecology and microbiome projects using high-throughput sequencing require fast and effective methods for en masse species assignments. In this article, we focus on selecting and re-annotating a set of marker reference sequences that represent each currently accepted order of Fungi. The particular focus is on sequences from the internal transcribed spacer region in the nuclear ribosomal cistron, derived from type specimens and/or ex-type cultures. Re-annotated and verified sequences were deposited in a curated public database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), namely the RefSeq Targeted Loci (RTL) database, and will be visible during routine sequence similarity searches with NR_prefixed accession numbers. A set of standards and protocols is proposed to improve the data quality of new sequences, and we suggest how type and other reference sequences can be used to improve identification of Fungi.

    • In this paper we present the closed form expressionof bit-error-rate (BER) of a convolution coded MB-OFDM Ultra-Wideband (UWB) system. The analysis considers the log-normal fading statistics of UWB channels and captures the estimation error variances of timing and carrier frequency offset (CFO)estimation by our already published synchronizers1 ATS [1] and MBAFS [2] respectively. The derivation invokes moment generating function (MGF) for log-normal fading statistics and the Gauss-Hermite quadrature integration to deliver average BER expression for rate Rc coded QPSK modulated MB-OFDM system with ATS and MBAFS synchronizers and least square (LS) channel estimator. The analytical result is validated with simulation in the high delay spread UWB channel model CM3.This analysis helps in thorough understanding on theperformance of an OFDM based communication system in anUltra-Wideband environment.

    • A cross-correlation function (CCF) based timingsynchronization algorithm of low complexity, applicable forsingle-band transmission is presented. Novelty of thesynchronizer lies in utilization of specific preamble structure of the Multi-band OFDM frame format. This threshold based algorithm also takes care of the fact that stronger multipath components frequently appear on the later clusters. Performance of the algorithm is measured in terms of mean-squared-error and synchronization probability. Performance is compared with another single-band based timing algorithm by Yak et al. [2]. The probability of correct detection is analyzed mathematically to verify the experimental results.

    • Palovarotene is an oral gamma-selective retinoid agonist. In animal emphysema models, palovarotene reduced inflammation, promoted structural repair and functional improvement. REPAIR (Retinoid treatment of Emphysema in Patients on the alpha(1)-antitrypsin International Registry), was an investigator-initiated, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised study to assess the safety and efficacy of 5 mg.day(-1) palovarotene given for 1 year to 262 patients with severe alpha(1)-antitrypsin deficiency and emphysema confirmed by computed tomography. Change in volume-adjusted 15th percentile point lung density from baseline in 1 year was the primary endpoint; functional end-points were also regularly assessed. We randomly assigned 133 and 129 patients to placebo or palovarotene, respectively. Both groups were well matched for all baseline characteristics, including respiratory medications. 88% and 85% of patients completed 1 year of treatment with placebo and palovarotene, respectively. Palovarotene was generally well tolerated. In the study completers population, the placebo-corrected difference of lung density was -0.45 HU at week 28 (p=0.64) and -0.25 HU at week 52 (p=0.94). A nonsignificant treatment difference in most functional parameters of the lung in favour of the drug was observed over time suggesting potential pharmacological effects of palovarotene. Palovarotene 5 mg.day(-1) over 1 yr failed to show a significant benefit on lung density in moderate-to-severe emphysema secondary to severe alpha(1)-antitrypsin deficiency.
