- We prove that the opposite of the category of coalgebras for the Vietoris endofunctor on the category of compact Hausdorff spaces is monadic over $\mathsf {Set}$ . We deliver an analogous result for the upper, lower, and convex Vietoris endofunctors acting on the category of stably compact spaces. We provide axiomatizations of the associated (infinitary) varieties. This can be seen as a version of Jonsson-Tarski duality for modal algebras beyond the zero-dimensional setting.

- This pilot study aimed to assess medical students' appraisals of a "mixed" virtual reality simulation for endoscopic surgery (with a virtual patient case in addition to a virtual colonoscopy) as well as the impact of this simulation set-up on students' performance. Findings indicate that virtual patients can enhance contextualization of simulated endoscopy and thus facilitate an authentic learning environment, which is important in order to increase motivation.

Synthesis of Novel MAX Phase Ti3ZnC2 via A-site-element-substitution Approach

- Using Ti3AlC2 as the precursor, a new MAX phase Ti3ZnC2 was synthesized via an A-elemental substitution reaction in a molten salts bath. Composition and crystal structure of Ti3ZnC2 were confirmed by XRD, SEM and TEM analysis. Its structure stability and lattice parameter of Ti3ZnC2 were further proved by a theoretical calculation based on density function theory (DFT). Moreover, thermodynamics of A-elemental substitution reactions based on Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu were investigated. All results indicated that the similar substitution reactions are feasible to form series of MAX phases whose A sites are Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu elements. The substitution reaction was achieved by diffusion of Zn atoms into A-layers of Ti3AlC2, which requires Al-Zn eutectic formation at high temperatures. The molten salts provided a moderate environment for substitution reaction and accelerated reaction dynamics. The major advantage of this substitution reaction is that MAX phase keeps individual metal carbide layers intact, thus the formation of competitive phases, such as MA alloys, was avoided. The proposed A-elemental substitution reactions approach opens a new door to design and synthesize novel MAX phases which could not be synthesized by the traditional methods.

- BACKGROUND: Chondromalacia patellae is a potentially disabling disorder characterised by features of patellar cartilage degradation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate markers of cartilage and bone turnover in patients with chondromalacia patellae. METHODS: 18 patients with chondromalacia patellae were studied. Serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (s-COMP) and bone sialoprotein (s-BSP) levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and compared with those of age and sex matched healthy control subjects. Periarticular bone mineral density (BMD) of both knee joints was assessed by dual energy x ray absorptiometry (DXA). RESULTS: s-COMP levels were significantly raised in all patients with chondromalacia patellae compared with healthy control subjects (p=0.0001). s-BSP levels did not differ significantly between the groups (p=0.41). BMD of the patella was significantly reduced in patients with chondromalacia patellae compared with the control subjects (p=0.016). In patients with bilateral chondromalacia patellae, BMD of the patella was lower in the more symptomatic knee joint (p=0.005). Changes in periarticular BMD were localised to the patella and were not present in femoral regions. Neither s-COMP (p=0.18) nor s-BSP (p=0.40) levels correlated with patellar BMD. CONCLUSIONS: Increased s-COMP levels, reflecting cartilage degradation, and reduced BMD localised to the patella may represent clinically useful markers in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with chondromalacia patellae. Measures of cartilage degradation did not correlate with loss of patellar bone density, suggesting dissociated pathophysiological mechanisms.

- I Ryssland spelar de litterära klassikerna en roll som på ett avgörande sätt skiljer sig från svenska förhållanden. På grund av den utbredda analfabetismen vid bolsjevikernas makttillträde har böcker och läsande blivit starkt förknippade med det sovjetiska moderniseringsprojektet. De nya makthavarna såg som sin uppgift att sprida det som i väst har uppfattats som ett borgerligt bildningsideal till de breda befolkningslagren, och som i Sovjetunionen kom att kodifieras som ”kampen för kulturnost” (att vara kulturell). En mycket ambitiös litteraturundervisning i ungdomsskolan introducerar de ryska 1800-tals klassikerna redan i femte klass, vilket skapar en gemensam kulturell referensram för stora befolkningsgrupper, både inom och utom nuvarande Ryska federationen. Artikeln studerar hur rysk television sedan millennieskiftet använder klassikerna för att bygga en identitet som överbrygger etnisk och nationell tillhörighet och baserar sig på ett gemensamt sovjetiskt kulturellt arv och tillgång till det ryska språket. Särskild uppmärksamhet ägnas filmatiseringar av klassiker som sänts som TV-serier, samt litterära referenser i humorprogram.
