  • Arbete, hälsa och kön
  • 2008
• Model-Based Investigation of Machining Systems Characteristics : Static and Dynamic Stability Analysis
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The increasing demands for precision and efficiency in machining call for new control strategies for machining systems based on the identification of static and dynamic characteristics under operational conditions. By considering the machining system as a closed-loop system consisting of a machine tool structure and a machining process, the join system characteristics can be analyzed. The capability of a machining system is mainly determined by its static and dynamic stiffness. The goal of this thesis is to introduce some concepts and methods regarding the identification of machining system stability. Two methods are discussed, one for the static behaviour analysis of a machine tool, and one for dynamic stability of a machining system. Preliminary results are indicating unambiguous identification of capabilities of machining systems static and dynamic characteristics. The static behaviour of a machine tool is evaluated by use of a loaded double ball bar (LDBB) device. The device reproduces the real interaction between the join system, the machine tool elastic structure and the cutting process. This load is not equivalent to real cutting forces, but it does have a similar effect on the structure. This has been investigated both trough simulation and experimental work. It is possible to capture the process – machine interaction in a machining system by use of the model-based identification approach. The identification approach takes into consideration this interaction and can therefore be used to characterize the machining system under operational conditions. The approach provides realistic prerequisites for in-process machining system testing. The model parameters can be further employed for control and optimization of the cutting process. Using different classification schemes, the model-based identification method is promising for the detection of instability. Furthermore, it is the author’s belief that a model-based stability analysis approach is needed to exploit the full potential of a model driven parts manufacturing approach.

  • Terahertz Instrumentation For Radio Astronomy
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Symposium on Terahertz Science and Technology between Japan and Sweden. ; , s. 28-29
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Radio Astronomy was always a frontrunner in the demand on terahertz technology. Millimetre and sub-millimetre wave receivers operate at ground-based observatories for more than 20 years with real Terahertz instruments making its way to ground-based [1] and space-based observatories, e.g., Herschel HIFI, during last years. In this talk, we will look at the key requirements to the radio astronomy and environmental science terahertz receivers using heterodyne technology. The most promising and established technologies for high-resolution spectroscopy instrumentation will be discussed. Using results of the Group for Advanced Receiver Development for Onsala Space Observatory 20 m telescope, for Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope and ALMA Project Band 5, we will illustrate the trends and achievements in the terahertz instrumentation for radio astronomy.

  • Impact of artemisinin-based combination therapy and insecticide-treated nets on malaria burden in Zanzibar
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: PLoS Medicine. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1549-1277 .- 1549-1676. ; 4:11, s. e309-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe Roll Back Malaria strategy recommends a combination of interventions for malaria control. Zanzibar implemented artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) for uncomplicated malaria in late 2003 and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) from early 2006. ACT is provided free of charge to all malaria patients, while LLINs are distributed free to children under age 5 y (“under five”) and pregnant women. We investigated temporal trends in Plasmodium falciparum prevalence and malaria-related health parameters following the implementation of these two malaria control interventions in Zanzibar. Methods and FindingsCross-sectional clinical and parasitological surveys in children under the age of 14 y were conducted in North A District in May 2003, 2005, and 2006. Survey data were analyzed in a logistic regression model and adjusted for complex sampling design and potential confounders. Records from all 13 public health facilities in North A District were analyzed for malaria-related outpatient visits and admissions. Mortality and demographic data were obtained from District Commissioner's Office. P. falciparum prevalence decreased in children under five between 2003 and 2006; using 2003 as the reference year, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were, for 2005, 0.55 (0.28–1.08), and for 2006, 0.03 (0.00–0.27); p for trend < 0.001. Between 2002 and 2005 crude under-five, infant (under age 1 y), and child (aged 1–4 y) mortality decreased by 52%, 33%, and 71%, respectively. Similarly, malaria-related admissions, blood transfusions, and malaria-attributed mortality decreased significantly by 77%, 67% and 75%, respectively, between 2002 and 2005 in children under five. Climatic conditions favorable for malaria transmission persisted throughout the observational period.ConclusionsFollowing deployment of ACT in Zanzibar 2003, malaria-associated morbidity and mortality decreased dramatically within two years. Additional distribution of LLINs in early 2006 resulted in a 10-fold reduction of malaria parasite prevalence. The results indicate that the Millennium Development Goals of reducing mortality in children under five and alleviating the burden of malaria are achievable in tropical Africa with high coverage of combined malaria control interventions.

  • Seamless integration of robots and tiny embedded devices in a PEIS-ecology
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE/RSJ international  conference on intelligent robots and systems, IROS 2007. - New York : IEEE. - 9781424409129 ; , s. 3101-3106
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fields of autonomous robotics and ambient intelligence are converging toward the vision of smart robotic environments, in which tasks are performed via the cooperation of many networked robotic devices. To enable this vision, we need a common communication and cooperation model that can be shared between robotic devices at different scales, ranging from standard mobile robots to tiny embedded devices. Unfortunately, today's robot middlewares are too heavy to run on tiny devices, and middlewares for embedded devices are too simple to support the cooperation models needed by an autonomous smart environment. In this paper, we propose a middleware model which allows the seamless integration of standard robots and simple off-the-shelf embedded devices. Our middleware is suitable for building truly ubiquitous robotics applications, in which devices of very different scales and capabilities can cooperate in a uniform way. We discuss the principles and implementation of our middleware, and show an experiment in which a mobile robot, a commercial mote, and a custom-built mote cooperate in a home service scenario.
