  • Fast-neutron-induced fission cross section of Pu 242 measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility nELBE
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 99:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fast-neutron-induced fission cross section of Pu242 was measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility nELBE. A parallel-plate fission ionization chamber with novel, homogeneous, large-area Pu242 deposits on Si-wafer backings was used to determine this quantity relative to the IAEA neutron cross-section standard U235(n,f) in the energy range of 0.5 to 10 MeV. The number of target nuclei was determined from the measured spontaneous fission rate of Pu242. This helps to reduce the influence of the fission fragment detection efficiency on the cross section. Neutron transport simulations performed with geant4, mcnp6, and fluka2011 are used to correct the cross-section data for neutron scattering. In the reported energy range the systematic uncertainty is below 2.7% and on average the statistical uncertainty is 4.9%. The determined results show an agreement within 0.67(16)% to recently published data and a good accordance to current evaluated data sets.

  • Performance of timing resistive plate chambers with relativistic neutrons from 300 to 1500 MeV
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-0221. ; 10:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prototype composed of four resistive plate chamber layers has been exposed to quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced from a deuteron beam of varying energy (300 to 1500 AMeV) in experiment S406 at GSI, Darmstad, Germany. Each layer, with an active area of about 2000 × 500 mm2, is made of modules containing the active gaps, all in multigap construction. Each gap is defined by 0.3 mm nylon mono-filaments positioned between 2.85 mm thick float glass electrodes. The modules are operated in avalanche mode with a non-flammable gas mixture composed of 90% C2H2F4 and 10% SF6. The signals are readout by a pick-up electrode formed by 15 copper strips (per layer), spaced at a pitch of 30 mm, connected at both sides to timing front end electronics. Measurements of the time of flight jitter of neutrons, in the mentioned energy range, point to a contribution of the resistive plate chamber in the order of 150 ps, independent of the neutron energy.

  • Performance of timing Resistive Plate Chambers with protons from 200 to 800 MeV
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 10:1, s. C01043-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A prototype composed of four resistive plate chamber layers has been exposed to quasi-monoenergetic protons produced from a deuteron beam of varying energy (200 to 800 AMeV) in experiment S406 at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The aim of the experiment is to characterize the response of the prototype to protons in this energy range, which deposit from 1.75 to 6 times more energy than minimum ionizing particles. Each layer, with an active area of about 2000 × 500 mm 2 , is made of modules containing the active gaps, all in multigap construction. Each gap is defined by 0.3 mm nylon mono-filaments positioned between 2.85 mm thick float glass electrodes. The modules are operated in avalanche mode with a non-flammable gas mixture composed of 90% C 2 H 2 F 4 and 10% SF 6 . The signals are readout by a pick-up electrode formed by 15 copper strips (per layer), spaced at a pitch of 30 mm, connected at both sides to timing front end electronics. Results show an uniform efficiency close to 100% along with a timing resolution of around 60 ps on the entire 2000 × 500 mm 2 area.

  • Concise Review : Workshop Review: Understanding and Assessing the Risks of Stem Cell-Based Therapies
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Stem Cells Translational Medicine. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2157-6564 .- 2157-6580. ; 4:4, s. 389-400
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The field of stem cell therapeutics is moving ever closer to widespread application in the clinic. However, despite the undoubted potential held by these therapies, the balance between risk and benefit remains difficult to predict. As in any new field, a lack of previous application in man and gaps in the underlying science mean that regulators and investigators continue to look for a balance between minimizing potential risk and ensuring therapies are not needlessly kept from patients. Here, we attempt to identify the important safety issues, assessing the current advances in scientific knowledge and how they may translate to clinical therapeutic strategies in the identification and management of these risks. We also investigate the tools and techniques currently available to researchers during preclinical and clinical development of stem cell products, their utility and limitations, and how these tools may be strategically used in the development of these therapies. We conclude that ensuring safety through cutting-edge science and robust assays, coupled with regular and open discussions between regulators and academic/industrial investigators, is likely to prove the most fruitful route to ensuring the safest possible development of new products.

  • Practical guidelines and recent advances in the Itrax XRF core-scanning procedure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Quaternary International. - : Elsevier BV. - 1040-6182 .- 1873-4553. ; 514, s. 16-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • XRF core scanning has evolved to become a standard analytical technique for the rapid assessment of elemental, density and textural variations in a wide range of sediments and other materials, with applications ranging from palaeoceanography, paleoclimatology, geology, and environmental forensics to environmental protection. In general, scanning provides rapid, non-destructive acquisition of elemental and textural variations at sub-millimetre resolution for a wide range of materials. Numerous procedural adaptations have been developed for the growing number of applications, such as analyses of unconsolidated, water-rich sediments, powdered soil samples, or resin bags. Here, practical expertise and guidance from the Itrax community, gained over 15 years, is presented that should provide insights for new and experienced users.

  • Genetic models reveal origin, persistence and non-redundant functions of IL-17-producing γδ T cells
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Journal of experimental medicine. - : Rockefeller University Press. - 1540-9538 .- 0022-1007. ; 215:12, s. 3006-3018
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • γδ T cells are highly conserved in jawed vertebrates, suggesting an essential role in the immune system. However, γδ T cell–deficient Tcrd−/− mice display surprisingly mild phenotypes. We hypothesized that the lack of γδ T cells in constitutive Tcrd−/− mice is functionally compensated by other lymphocytes taking over genuine γδ T cell functions. To test this, we generated a knock-in model for diphtheria toxin–mediated conditional γδ T cell depletion. In contrast to IFN-γ–producing γδ T cells, IL-17–producing γδ T cells (Tγδ17 cells) recovered inefficiently after depletion, and their niches were filled by expanding Th17 cells and ILC3s. Complementary genetic fate mapping further demonstrated that Tγδ17 cells are long-lived and persisting lymphocytes. Investigating the function of γδ T cells, conditional depletion but not constitutive deficiency protected from imiquimod-induced psoriasis. Together, we clarify that fetal thymus-derived Tγδ17 cells are nonredundant local effector cells in IL-17–driven skin pathology.
