  • Aspects of exercise with person-centred guidance influencing the transition to independent exercise: a qualitative interview study among older adults with rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Review of Aging and Physical Activity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1813-7253 .- 1861-6909. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Besides being health enhancing and disease preventing, exercise is also an important part of the management of chronic conditions, including the inflammatory joint disease rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, older adults with RA present a lower level of physical activity than healthy older adults. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore aspects of participation in moderate- to high-intensity exercise with person-centred guidance influencing the transition to independent exercise for older adults with RA. Methods: A qualitative interview study was conducted. In-depth interviews with 16 adults with RA aged between 68 and 75years, who had taken part in the interventionarm of a randomized controlled trial performing moderate-to-high-intensity exercise with person-centred guidance, were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in six main categories: A feasible opportunity to adopt exercise, Experiencing positive effects of exercise, Contextual factors affect the experience of exercise, Developing knowledge and thinking, Finding one's way, and Managing barriers for exercise. The exercise with person-centred guidance was described as a feasible opportunity to start exercising as a basis for the transition to independent exercise. They described developing knowledge and thinking about exercise during the intervention enabling them to manage the transition to independent exercise. Finding one's own way for exercise became important for sustaining independent exercise. Lastly, barriers for exercise and strategies for overcoming these were described. Reduced physical health, both temporary and permanent, was described as a considerable barrier for exercise. Conclusion: The participants described several aspects of participating in exercise that influenced and facilitated their transition to independent exercise. The exercise was experienced as manageable and positive, by a careful introduction and development of an individual exercise routine in partnership with a physiotherapist. This seems to have favored the development of self-efficacy, with importance for future independent exercise. Reduced physical health, both temporary and permanent, was described as a considerable barrier for exercise. The personal process of trying to make the exercise one's own, and developing knowledge about exercise and new thoughts about oneself, seemed to prepare the participants for managing independent exercise and overcoming barriers.

  • Synaptic relationships between serotonin-immunoreactive axons and dorsal horn spinocerebellar tract cells in the cat spinal cord
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience. - 0306-4522. ; 70, s. 247-253
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dorsal horn spinocerebellar tract cells were identified according to electrophysiological criteria in adult cats and labelled intracellularly with horseradish peroxidase. Sections containing labelled neurons were processed to reveal serotonin immunoreactivity and examined with light and electron microscopy. Numerous contacts were observed on cell bodies, and on proximal and intermediate parts of dendrites. Electron microscopic examination of contacts revealed that synaptic junctions were usually present at the region of apposition. It is concluded that serotonin has a postsynaptic action on dorsal horn spinocerebellar tract cells and that this action is mediated through conventional synapses. Copyright © 1995 IBRO. • A socio-technical analysis of functional properties in a joint cognitive system: a case study in an aircraft cockpit
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0014-0139 .- 1366-5847.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a socio-technical work domain, humans, device interfaces and artefacts all affect transformations of information flow. Such transformations, which may involve a change of auditory to visual information & vice versa or alter semantic approximations into spatial proximities from instruments readings, are generally not restricted to solely human cognition. This paper applies a joint cognitive system approach to explore a socio-technical system. A systems ergonomics perspective is achieved by applying a multi-layered division to transformations of information between, and within, human and technical agents. The approach uses the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM), but abandons the traditional boundary between medium and agent in favour of accepting aircraft systems and artefacts as agents, with their own functional properties and relationships. The joint cognitive system perspective in developing the FRAM model allows an understanding of the effects of task and information propagation, and eventual distributed criticalities, taking advantage of the functional properties of the system, as described in a case study related to the cockpit environment of a DC-9 aircraft.Practitioner Summary: This research presents the application of one systemic method to understand work systems and performance variability in relation to the transformation of information within a flight deck for a specific phase of flight. By using a joint cognitive systems approach both retrospective and prospective investigation of cockpit challenges will be better understood.

  • Stadsbarndom: om barns erfarenheter av platser i staden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Barn: forskning om barn og barndom i Norden. - : Norsk senter for barneforskning (Noseb). - 0800-1669. ; :2, s. 23-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Domestic hot water heat pump: Modelling, analysis and flexibility assessment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference, APPEEC. - 2157-4847 .- 2157-4839. - 9798350318098 ; 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current study deals with a demonstration of how buildings can support the power system during power deficit conditions, with a focus on using domestic hot water heat pumps as a flexibility resource. A vapour compression heat pump cycle is used for estimating the performance of the heat pump during different operating conditions. Furthermore, this model is integrated with a simple, yet detailed state space model of the domestic hot water tank considering stratification. The result shows that the domestic hot water heat pump under study can provide flexibility by consuming no electricity for nearly two hours, without compromising the thermal comfort. This is realised by reducing the set point temperature of water by 5◦C.

  • Quantification of electrical load flexibility offered by an air to water heat pump equipped single-family residential building in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 14th IEA Heat Pump Conference 2023 (HPC2023) Conference Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heat pumps are widely used in Swedish single-family houses for space and water heating applications, of which the most common is air-to-water heat pumps. Today, there is an increase in the variability and uncertainty of electricity production due to an increment in the share of electricity generation by intermittent energy sources. Hence, as opposed to the conventional power system operation, there is variability and uncertainty in electricity consumption and production. One possible way of addressing the challenge of balancing the power system is by using heat pumps as a flexibility resource. In this regard, this study quantifies the flexibility potential by developing and integrating a mathematical model of an air-to-water heat pump with the thermal model of a building with a standard way of space heating i.e., radiator heating. The result from this study will provide an estimate of flexibility levels from space heating, in terms of varying levels of reduced electricity consumption as a function of indoor temperature, during different outdoor ambient temperatures. Furthermore, the result of this study helps in employing suitable measures for demand-side-management to support the power system during severe problems.

  • Climbing the ladder : an evaluation of three different anguillid eel climbing substrata and placement of upstream passage solutions at migration barriers
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Animal Conservation. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1367-9430 .- 1469-1795. ; 22:5, s. 452-462
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conservation programmes for endangered, long-lived and migratory species often have to target multiple life stages. The bottlenecks associated with the survival of juvenile anguillid eels migrating into inland waters, the survival and growth of the freshwater life stage, as well as the recruitment and survival of silver eels, migrating back to the ocean to spawn, must be resolved. In this study, we focus on the efficiency of passage solutions for upstream migrating juveniles. Such solutions can consist of inclined ramps lined with wetted climbing substrata. We evaluated different commonly used substrata in a controlled experiment, recorded eel behaviour at the entrance of the ramp with infrared videography and validated the experimental results at a hydropower dam, where we also investigated the effects of ramp placement on performance. In the experiment on eel substratum selection, 40 % of the eels passed in lanes with studded substratum, whereas only 21 and 5 % passed using open weave and bristle substrata, respectively. Video analysis revealed that the studded substratum attracted more approaches and initiated climbs than the other substrata, but once a climb had been initiated, passage success rates did not differ between substrata. Eels using the studded substratum climbed 26 % faster than those using the bristle substratum and almost four times as fast as those climbing in the open weave. The superior performance of the studded substratum was supported by data from the field validation. Moreover, ramps positioned by the bank with low water velocities caught the most eels, but proximity to the dam had no effect on performance. To strengthen the European eel population, more juveniles need to reach their freshwater feeding grounds. A critical step to achieve this increase is to equip upstream passage solutions with suitable substrata and to optimize ramp placement at migration obstacles.
