  • Fatigue modeling as related to flexible pavement design - State of the art
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Road Materials and Pavement Design. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0629 .- 2164-7402. ; 8:2, s. 165-205
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A literature study of rheological and fatigue modeling of asphalt mixtures is presented. Theoretical aspects on structural modeling, rheological behavior and the fatigue integration in design procedures are reviewed In principle, pavement design methods can be categorized in three broad groups: empirical, semi-mechanistic and fully mechanistic methods. Pavement design is generally performed using semi-mechanistic methods comprising analytical or numerical structural response models and deterioration modeling based on transfer functions and shift factors. In the case of fatigue deterioration, several approaches have been elaborated e.g. classical models, fracture mechanics and damage mechanics. The approaches differ regarding theoretical foundation and evaluation methods used. Recognizing significant limitations concerning theoretical basis as well as lack of empirical support for current design methods, a shift in paradigm from semi-empirical methods towards more advanced fully mechanistic methods have been initiated. According to this approach, improved pavements are achieved by appropriate design methods which are capable of predicting fatigue resistance in the actual pavement environment, and thus taking into account complex stress conditions, influence of temperature and material characteristics, such as aging and healing.

  • Distribution of vesicular glutamate transporters 1 and 2 in the rat spinal cord, with a note on the spinocervical tract.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Comparative Neurology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0021-9967 .- 1096-9861. ; 497:5, s. 683-701
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To evaluate whether the organization of glutamatergic fibers systems in the lumbar cord is also evident at other spinal levels, we examined the immunocytochemical distribution of vesicle glutamate transporters 1 and 2 (VGLUT1, VGLUT2) at several different levels of the rat spinal cord. We also examined the expression of VGLUTs in an ascending sensory pathway, the spinocervical tract, and colocalization of VGLUT1 and VGLUT2. Mainly small VGLUT2-immunoreactive varicosities occurred at relatively high densities in most areas, with the highest density in laminae I-II. VGLUT1 immunolabeling, including small and medium-sized to large varicosities, was more differentiated, with the highest density in the deep dorsal horn and in certain nuclei such as the internal basilar nucleus, the central cervical nucleus, and the column of Clarke. Lamina I and IIo displayed a moderate density of small VGLUT1 varicosities at all spinal levels, although in the spinal enlargements a uniform density of such varicosities was evident throughout laminae I-II in the medial half of the dorsal horn. Corticospinal tract axons displayed VGLUT1, indicating that the corticospinal tract is an important source of small VGLUT1 varicosities. VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 were cocontained in small numbers of varicosities in laminae III-IV and IX. Anterogradely labeled spinocervical tract terminals in the lateral cervical nucleus were VGLUT2 immunoreactive. In conclusion, the principal distribution patterns of VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 are essentially similar throughout the rostrocaudal extension of the spinal cord. The mediolateral differences in VGLUT1 distribution in laminae I-II suggest dual origins of VGLUT1-immunoreactive varicosities in this region.

  • Inverse association of high-fat diet preference and anxiety-like behavior : a putative role for urocortin 2
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Genes, Brain and Behavior. - 1601-1848 .- 1601-183X. ; 8:2, s. 193-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate whether the preference for a palatable high-fat diet (HFD) is associated with response to novelty and with anxiety-like behavior in rats and whether such fat preference correlates with gene expression of hypothalamic neuropeptides related to feeding. We subjected male rats to two tests of exploration of novel environments: the multivariate concentric square field (MCSF) and the elevated plus maze (EPM). The rats were then exposed to a 5-day test of preference for a palatable HFD versus reference diets. Messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of 21 neuropeptides were investigated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We found a strong positive correlation of HFD preference and open-arm activity in the EPM (% open-arm time, r(s) = 0.629, df = 26, P < 0.001). Thus, HFD preference was inversely associated with anxiety-like behavior. The same association was found for HFD preference and behavior in the MCSF (bridge entries, r(s) = 0.399, df = 23, P = 0.048). In addition, the HFD preference was positively correlated (r(s) = 0.433, df = 25, P = 0.021) with hypothalamic mRNA levels of urocortin 2 (Ucn 2). Moreover, behavior in the EPM was significantly correlated with expression levels of the receptor for Ucn 2, the corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 2, in the hypothalamus (r(s) = 0.382, df = 33, P = 0.022, pituitary (r(s) = 0.494, df = 31, P = 0.004) and amygdala (r(s) = 0.381, df = 30, P = 0.032). We conclude that preference for palatable HFD is inversely associated with anxiety and propose that Ucn 2 signaling may play a role in this association.

  • Offset Eliminative Map Matching Algorithm for Intersection Active Safety
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: 2006 IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, IV 2006; Meguro-Ku, Tokyo; Japan; 13 June 2006 through 15 June 2006. - 9784901122863 ; :1689609, s. 82-88
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital map information and Continuous Positioning Systems (CPS) are being increasingly used in active safety applications. However due to imprecision associated with digital road maps and inevitable inaccuracies in CPS positions, a map matching algorithm is essentialfor these applications. One field of active safety in which navigation information can be used is Intersection Active Safety Applications (IASA) which requires a precise position of vehicle relative to road network in an intersection. In this paper a novel map matching algorithm for an IASA is presented. To determine the vehicle trajectory relative to the road network, the proposed map matching algorithm calculates the general offset between digital road map and the CPS given vehicle trajectory by fusion of local offsets with a Kalman filter, incorporating their respective ncertainties. The created offset liminative map matching algorithm was tested on a omplex urban trajectory and showed very ncouraging results.

  • It seemed like a good idea at the time
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: SIGCSE '08. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781595937995 ; , s. 528-529
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We often learn of successful pedagogical experiments, but we seldom hear of the the ones that failed. For this special session we solicited submissions from the SIGCSE membership, selected the best from among these, and will have presentations at the session by the selected authors. Our contributions describe pedagogical approaches that seemed to be good ideas but turned out as failures. Contributors will describe their pedagogical experiment, the rationale for the experiment, evidence of failure, and lessons learned.
