  • Not Speaking or Acting as Anti-Social Feminism and Unbecoming Woman : A Queer Reading of Silence in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony Trilogy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Barnboken. - : The Swedish Institute for Children's Books. - 0347-772X .- 2000-4389. ; 45, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to explore the queer possibilities of the silence in the depiction of the protagonist’s love life in Agnes von Krusenstjerna’s Tony trilogy (1922–1926). The silence in the trilogy is manifested through absence: the theme of “ingenting” (nothing), the protagonist not speaking or acting, and the aesthetic that is created by interruptions in the protagonist’s dialogue, inner monologue, and narration. The analysis focuses on three passages: a depiction of an encounter between Tony and one of her suitors, her relative Frank Maclean, in Tonys läroår (Tony’s Apprenticeship, 1924); the ending of the trilogy in Tonys sista läroår (Tony’s Last Apprenticeship, 1926); and an epilogue to the trilogy, which was never included in it but later published in the second, expanded edition of En dagdriverskas anteckningar (The Notes of a Flâneuse, 1934). They are contextualised with references to the trilogy as a whole and compared to Krusenstjerna’s previous novels Ninas dagbok (The Diary of Nina, 1917) and Helenas första kärlek (Helena’s First Love, 1918). The method is a close reading with instead of against the grain, focusing on queer aspects of depictions of heterosexuality. It draws on theory belonging to the anti-social turn of queer studies and queer temporality studies. My conclusion is that Tony not speaking or acting can be read as anti-social feminism, with Tony as an anti-social feminist subject. Her queer life schedule can be interpreted as unbecoming woman. The “nothing,” and implicitly the creativity, that her passivity leads to accomplishes the opposite of patriarchal and chrononormative structures. The narrative and its ending are queer in the sense that they refuse to cohere and to fulfil demands for a happy, emancipatory ending.

  • A MonoSLAM Approach to Lane Departure Warning System
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics (AIM 2014). - 9781479957378 ; , s. 640-645
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems are one of the widely researched topics under Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), because they are seen as the most viable way to prevent the traffic accidents caused by involuntary lane departures from happening. Various methods and algorithms used for lane tracking to be used in LDW in the literature; however, most of them only track the lanes or the position of the vehicle inside the lane. This article introduces MonoSLAM based method for LDW design, assuming that the camera is moving in a previously unknown scene. While applying this method, a constant lateral velocity model for the vehicle is used, which assumes that the vehicle is exposed to undetermined Gaussian lateral accelerations. As the first output, the localization of the vehicle on the road is achieved. Moreover, the method is applied with a low cost webcam attached on a vehicle. Five control points for each lane is used to track the lanes and these control points are modelled as if they have a constant position. Detection is made with steerable filters exploiting the state covariance from EKF to make detection more robust. In addition to this, off-line experimental results are given for 200 frames. Results of lane slope on image plane compared with ground truth marked manually for performance benchmarking and localization estimation of a scenario similar to loop closure test is given.

  • Dela : a deep ensemble learning approach for cross-layer VSI-DDoS detection on the edge
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Web application services and networks become a major target of low-rate Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks such as Very Short Intermittent DDoS (VSI-DDoS). These threats exploit the TCP congestion control mechanism to cause transient resource outage and impute delays for legitimate users’ requests, while they bypass the secure systems. Besides that, cross-layer VSI-DDoS attacks, where the performed attacks are towards the different layers of the edge cloud infrastructures, are able to cause violation of customers’ Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) with less visible behavioral patterns. In this work, we propose a novel Deep Ensemble Learning Approach named DELA for detection of cross-layer VSI-DDoS on the edge cloud. This approach is developed based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), ensemble learning, and a new voting mechanism based on Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN). In addition, it employs a novel training and detection algorithm to combat such attacks in web services and networks. The model shows improved results due to the utilization of historical information in decision- making and also the usage of neural network as aggregator instead of a static threshold-based aggregation. Moreover, we propose a novel overlapped data chunking algorithm that is able to ameliorate the detection performance. Furthermore, the evaluation of DELA shows its superior performance over our testbed and benchmark datasets. Accordingly, DELA achieves on average 4.88% higher F 1 score compared to state-of-the-art methods.

  • Contrasting lipid biomarkers in mountain rivers in the Nepal Himalayas : Organic matter characteristics and contribution to the fluvial carbon pool
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geoscience Frontiers. - Beijing : China University of Geosciences. - 1674-9871. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nepal Himalayas is the source of many glacial and spring-fed river systems crisscrossing the mountainous terrain. There is an increasing recognition of small mountain rivers (SMRs) to have a significant combined export of dissolved and particulate organic carbon to the global carbon flux. We analyzed fluvial sediments from two SMRs and compared the results with two large mountain rivers (LMRs) in Nepal. We investigated the organic matter (OM), its compositional variability, and seasonal export using a suite of lipid biomarkers, namely n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, n-alkanols, and sterols. The SMRs indicated a similarity in lipid distribution and were affected by a strong seasonal variability. The LMRs showed a distinct contrast in the distribution of lipids in suspended sediments. Bedload sediments in SMRs were derived from diverse sources with weak terrigenous dominance all-year-round compared to the suspended load. Functional lipids (n-alkanoic acids and n-alkanols) were the major constituents in SMR sediments, indicating better preservation. In contrast, n-alkane concentration dominated over other fractions in suspended sediments retrieved from LMRs. The biomarker trends differentiate SMRs from LMRs with lower transformed/degraded OM in SMRs. A common observation was the strong presence of even carbon compounds in short-chain n-alkanes in SMR bedload sediments and their predominance in suspended sediments in LMRs. Such an unusual trend is attributed to specific biomarker sources from the catchment and ongoing processes in fluvial systems. Topsoil colonized by fungal species under moist acidic conditions and autochthonous bacteria contributes to the organic matter pool in shallow SMRs. In LMRs, the contribution from thermally mature sedimentary hydrocarbons and the diagenetic reduction of nalkanoic acids to n-alkanes are additional contributors to the allochthonous carbon pool. The differences in lipid concentrations, their distribution, seasonality, and the size of rivers suggest differential preservation/degradation of the organic matter pool and their importance in contributing to the carbon budget. • Academia and society in collaborative knowledge production towards urban sustainability : several schemes—three common crossroads
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environment, Development and Sustainability. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1387-585X .- 1573-2975.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arrangements for collaboration in knowledge production across academia, government, non-governmental organisations, and corporations have several names, such as citizen-science, community-based participatory research, engaged research and hybrid forums. The multiplicity of schemes does not lie only in the high number of names for various versions of collaborative knowledge production. Different scholars also use concepts in multiple ways, depending on their individual choices, mother disciplines, and the problem area in which collaboration occurs. At the same time, there is a lack of analytical tools that address the full range of collaborative research schemes and provide a systematic set of questions to learn about the schemes, challenges, and opportunities. Based on our review of academic journal articles highlighting collaborative research schemes, this paper aims to analyse three parameters which it is fair to say that virtually all arrangements of collaborative knowledge production ought to consider when making decisions, parameters that are often partially missed or misunderstood: (A) epistemic-procedural, (B) exclusive-inclusive and (C) aggregative-integrative. By examining the three parameters, their political theory origins, and how they connect to and challenge existing schemes of knowledge collaboration, we provide analytical tools that could facilitate processes of developing and scrutinising arrangements of collaborative research.

  • An Extended SNOMED CT Concept Model for Observations in Molecular Genetics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: AMIA Annual Symposium Proceedings. ; , s. 352-360
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Molecular genetics laboratory reports are multiplying and increasingly of clinical importance in diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infectious disease and managing of public health. Little of this data is structured or maintained in the EHR in format useful for decision support or research. Structured, computable reporting is limited by non-availability of a domain ontology for these data. The IHTSDO and Regenstrief Institute(RI) have been collaborating since 2008 to develop a unified concept model and ontology of observable entities - concepts which represent the results of laboratory and clinical observations. In this paper we report the progress we have made to apply that unified concept model to the structured recording of observations in clinical molecular genetic pathology including immunohistochemistry and sequence variant findings. The primary use case for deployment is the structured and coded reporting of Cancer checklist

  • Detection of Missing Web Services: The Partial Deduction Approach
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of International Conference on Next Generation Web Services Practices, NWeSP'05. - : IEEE Computer Society. ; , s. 339-344
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many methods have been recently proposed for composing automatically Web services from existing ones. The methods range from AI planning to automated theorem proving and graph search algorithms. However the usability of these methods is greatly affected by two assumptions. Firstly, it is assumed that developers provide consistent declarative descriptions of Web services. Secondly, it is assumed that there exists a sufficient set of atomic Web services, which would facilitate the composition of all other Web services. In this paper we propose a method to ensure these two assumptions by using analysis of Web services' descriptions. In particular we apply partial deduction for identifying possible inconsistencies in Web service descriptions. Our method also determines possibly missing atomic Web services, which should be implemented in order to compose a requested composite Web service.
