    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

    • Aims: Sorbitol and myo-inositol levels and morphology of sural nerve were compared with nerve function and clinical neuropathy in men with diabetic, impaired (IGT), and normal glucose tolerance. Methods: After neurography of sural nerve and determinations of sensory thresholds for vibration, warm and cold on the foot, whole nerve sural nerve biopsy was performed in 10 men with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, 10 with IGT, and 10 with normal glucose tolerance. Polyol levels were assessed by gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results: Sural nerve amplitudes were significantly lower and sorbitol levels significantly higher in diabetic patients (median (interquartile range)) (3.7 (3.5) μV and 643 (412) pmol/mg protein, respectively) both compared with IGT (11.3 (10.6) μV; P = 0.04 and 286 (83) pmol/mg protein; P = 0.0032, respectively) and normally glucose tolerant (10.0 (11.6); P = 0.0142 and 296 (250) pmol/mg protein; P = 0.0191, respectively) subjects. There were no differences in nerve morphology between the three groups. Nerve myo-inositol levels correlated, however, positively with cluster density (r(s) = 0.56; P = 0.0054). In diabetic and IGT subjects, sural nerve amplitudes (2.6 (3.8) vs. 12.1 (10.6) μV; P = 0.0246) and myelinated nerve fibre density (MNFD; 4076 (1091) vs. 5219 (668) nerve fibres/mm2; P = 0.0021) were significantly lower in nine subjects with clinical neuropathy than in 10 without. Conclusions: Nerve degeneration (i.e. MNFD) correlated with clinical neuropathy but not with glucose tolerance status whereas nerve myo-inositol levels positively correlated with signs of nerve regeneration (i.e. increased cluster density).

  • Dissociative recombination of D+(D2O)(2) water cluster ions with free electrons

    • Dissociative recombination (DR) of the water cluster ion D+(D2O)(2) has been studied at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING (Manne Siegbahn Laboratory, Stockholm University). Cluster ions were injected into the ring and accelerated to an energy of 2.28 MeV. The stored ion beam was merged with an almost monoenergetic electron beam, and neutral fragments produced by DR were detected by an energy-sensitive surface barrier detector. The first experimental determinations of the absolute DR cross section and branching ratios for a cluster ion are reported. The cross section for the process D+(D2O)(2)+e(-) is large and reaches 6.10(-12) cm(2) at a low center-of-mass collision energy of 0.001 eV. The cross section has an E-1.19+/-0.02 dependence in the energy range 0.001-0.0052 eV, and a steeper slope with an E-1.70+/-0.12 dependence for E=0.052-0.324 eV. The general trends are similar to the results for previously studied molecular ions, but the cross section is higher in absolute numbers for the cluster ion. Thermal rate coefficients for electron temperatures of 50-2000 K are deduced from the cross section data and the rate coefficients are consequently also large. Branching ratios for the product channels are determined with a grid technique. Break-up into 2D(2)O+D is the dominating dissociation channel with a probability of 0.94+/-0.04. The channel resulting in the fragments D2O+OD+D-2 has a probability of 0.04+/-0.02, and the probability for formation of D3O+D2O is 0.02+/-0.03. The results are compared with data for molecular ions, and the cluster dissociation dynamics are discussed.

  • OH desorption energies for a palladium catalyst characterised by kinetic modelling and laser-induced fluorescence

    • A kinetic model for the H-2/O-2 reaction on a polycrystalline palladium catalyst has been constructed using CHEMKIN in order to understand the coverage-dependent OH desorption energy. Each adsorbed oxygen atom was modelled to cover four I'd surface sites. The yield of OH and the water production were measured with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and microcalorimetry respectively as a function of the relative hydrogen concentration, alpha(H2). The temperature of the catalyst was 1300 K, the total pressure was 13 Pa and the flow was set to 100 SCCM. In fitting the model to the experimental data, the OH desorption energy E-OH(d) was found to have a first-order coverage dependence according to: E-OH(d)(theta) = E-OH(d)(0) - Btheta, where B is a constant set to 92 kJ/mol. The desorption energy at zero coverage E-OH(d)(0) was determined to be 226 kJ/mol. The model could also qualitatively and quantitatively reproduce the apparent desorption energy as a function of alpha(H2); therefore it is believed that the coverage could be predicted by the model. The values for E-OH(d)(theta) were calculated as a function of alpha(H2). From the results of a sensitivity analysis and rate of production calculations' there are strong reasons to believe that the main water-forming reaction on Pd at 1300 K is the hydrogen addition reaction, H + OH reversible arrow H2O. Enthalpy diagrams for the water-forming reactions are also presented.
