  • Reading Stockholm Riots 2013 in social media by text-mining
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The riots in Stockholm in May 2013 were an event that reverberated in the world media for its dimension of violence that had spreadthrough the Swedish capital. In this study we have investigated the role of social media in creating media phenomena via text miningand natural language processing. We have focused on two channels of communication for our analysis: Twitter and Poloniainfo.se(Forum of Polish community in Sweden). Our preliminary results show some hot topics driving discussion related mostly to SwedishPolice and Swedish Politics by counting word usage. Typical features for media intervention are presented. We have built networks ofmost popular phrases, clustered by categories (geography, media institution, etc.). Sentiment analysis shows negative connotation withPolice. The aim of this preliminary exploratory quantitative study was to generate questions and hypotheses, which we could carefullyfollow by deeper more qualitative methods.

  • An Exploratory Analysis of Swedish Street Gangs : Applying the Maxson and Klein Typology to a Swedish Gang Dataset
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1043-9862 .- 1552-5406. ; 28:4, s. 426-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we investigate the application of the Maxson and Klein gang typology on a dataset of seven Swedish street gangs. Individual-level data on 239 gang members were analyzed. While some Swedish criminologists maintain that no street gangs exist in Sweden, this research project provides evidence to the contrary. Findings support the utility of the Maxson and Klein typology. Results show that the “compressed gang” was the most common type of street gang in the dataset. This finding is also in concert with other European gang studies, adding further evidence for the applicability of the gang typology. Findings also suggest a similar pattern of gang development and structure to that of American and European street gangs.

  • The myth of sucess: the emergence and maintance of a special gang unit in Stockholm Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0192-4036 .- 2157-6475. ; 39:3, s. 199-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Street gangs and organized crime groups pose a unique challenge to police departments across the globe. Given their penchant for public displays of affiliation through well-recognized signs and symbols, their presence is often associated with media attention and public scrutiny, which threatens the legitimacy of the police and creates added pressure to generate a specific and public response to the threat these groups pose. The current study documents how the Stockholm County, Sweden, police developed and maintained an anti-gang operation in response to an emerging gang problem. While police officials labeled the anti-gang initiative a success in the news media, analyses of prosecution statistics and internal police documents demonstrate a less than ideal effect of this operation. Potential reasons for the discrepancy in public pronouncements of programmatic success relative to evaluation of official data are discussed.

  • The Stockholm Gang Intervention and Prevention Project (SGIP) : introducing a holistic approach to gang enforcement
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Youth gangs in international perspective. - New York : Springer. - 9781461416586 - 9781461416593 ; , s. 251-269
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some commentators have suggested that there are important differences between American and European gangs, such as the availability of guns, cars, and drugs (Curry and Decker 2003). Researchers contend that this would arguably change the very nature of European gangs compared to American gangs. Curry and Decker (2003) also point out that American and European gangs differ in the type of responses they incur from society. European responses, for example, are more concerned with social opportunity approaches, whereas American responses are more concerned with gang suppression. This chapter will examine the early criminal network and gang development research in Sweden and delineate some of the police responses to the phenomenon. Furthermore, this chapter will address recent gang developments in Sweden and highlight the essential components and working mechanisms of the Stockholm Gang Intervention and Prevention Project (SGIP)—a holistic enforcement response to the growing gang problem in Sweden. SGIP will test various theoretical components of gang enforcement, intervention, and prevention and apply them to street gangs in Stockholm. The goal is to fi nd a method that is practical and applicable to this complex problem. Consequently, this chapter will discuss issues and challenges surrounding the implementation of prevention and intervention policies.
