- The paper is devoted to modeling optimal exercise strategies of thebehavior of investors and issuers working with convertible bonds.This implies solution of the problems of stock price modeling, payoffcomputation and minimax optimization.Stock prices (underlying asset) were modeled under the assumptionof the geometric Brownian motion of their values. The Monte Carlomethod was used for calculating the real payoff which is the objectivefunction. The minimax optimization problem was solved using thederivative-free Downhill Simplex method.The performed numerical experiments allowed to formulate recommendationsfor the choice of appropriate size of the initial simplex inthe Downhill Simplex Method, the number of generated trajectoriesof underlying asset, the size of the problem and initial trajectories ofthe behavior of investors and issuers.

- DNA monomers and oligomers are currently showing great promise as building blocks for supramolecular arrays that can self-assemble in a fashion preprogrammed by the base pairing code. The design and build-up of hybrid DNA/amphiphilic self-assemblies can expand the range of possible architectures and enhance the selectivity toward a well-specified geometry. We report on the self-assembly properties in aqueous solution of a cholesteryl-tetraethylenglycol single stranded 18-mer oligonucleotide (ON(1)TEG-Chol) and on its spontaneous insertion in fluid phospholipid membranes. Up to 500 units of these lipophilic ss-oligonucleotides can be incorporated in the outer leaflet of 350 A radius POPC vesicle. The insertion and hybridization with the complementary oligonucleotide are monitored through light scattering as an increase of hydrodynamic thickness, which is interpreted in terms of average distance between anchoring sites. The conformation of the ss-oligonucleotidic portion is strongly dependent on surface coverage, passing from a quasi-random coil to a more rigid configuration, as concentration increases. Interestingly, conformational details affect in a straightforward fashion the hybridization kinetics. Liposomes with single- and double-strand decorations remain stable within the experimental time window (about one week). The structure represents an example of successful and stable amphiphile/DNA supramolecular hybrid, where a DNA guest is held in a membrane by hydrophobic interactions. The lipophilic oligonucleotide under investigation is therefore a suitable building block that can effectively serve as a hydrophobic anchor in the fluid bilayer to assemble supramolecular constructs based on the DNA digital code.

How Do Consumers Perceive Cultured Meat in Croatia, Greece, and Spain?

- The meat production industry is one of the leading contributors of greenhouse gas emissions. Cultured meat presents itself as a potential eco- and animal-friendly meat substitute which has the potential to eradicate animal cruelty and reduce both the environmental footprint and the risk of zoonotic illnesses, while delivering a nutrient-dense product. The purpose of this study was to investigate how consumers perceive cultured meat and if the frequency of meat consumption is related to their intention of trying or purchasing cultured meat. Data were collected online in 2020 from Croatia, Greece, and Spain. Among the 2007 respondents, three segments were identified according to meat consumption and variety, plus an a priori identified group of “non-meat eaters”. Sixty percent perceived cultured meat as kind to animals, 57% as unnatural, 45% as healthy and environmentally-friendly, 21% as disgusting, and only 16% as tasty. Although 47% of the respondents had not heard of cultured meat before, 47% would taste it and 41% would purchase it for the same price as conventional meat. This indicates that consumers from Croatia, Greece and Spain might be likely to purchase cultured meat if sold at an affordable price.

Mechanical characterization of tablets using post compression in-die cyclic loading

- The purpose of this work is to use post compression in-die cyclic loading as an analytical powder compression tool. Cyclic loading experiments (partial unloading followed by reloading) were performed on tablets formed from three relatively coarse powders (similar to 100 mu m) comprised of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), ibuprofen (IBU) and lactose monohydrate (LAC). The reloading curve was always linear initially, irrespective of the shape of the unloading curve. Hence, nonlinearities in the unloading curve should be attributed to inelastic phenomena rather than to nonlinear elasticity. The slope of the reloading curve generally decreased with increasing degree of unloading, indicating a progressive damage of the contact network upon unloading. For MCC and IBU, consistent unloading curves following primary and secondary loading were obtained. For LAC, the secondary unloading curves were displaced towards smaller tablet heights, suggesting that that particle fragmentation occurs during unloading and reloading, also when the maximal tableting pressure is not exceeded.

- The reactivity of alkylperoxyl radicals and -O3SOO* toward ozone was investigated. The peroxyl radicals were produced by steady-state gamma-radiolysis in the presence Of O-3. The rate constants were extracted from the decay rate of ozone measured during the irradiation. The rate constants vary between 7 x 10(3) and 2 x 10(5) M-1 s(-1) and there is a trend of increasing rate constant with electron-withdrawing substituent. Quantum chemical computations support a mechanism, according to which formation of an alkyl trioxide radical is the rate-determining step. This is followed by rapid expulsion Of O-2 to yield the alkoxyl radical. Conceivably, the alkyl trioxide radical is preceded by an extremely unstable alkyl pentoxide radical in equilibrium with the reactants.
