    • Virtual Reality (VR) as a complementary tool for medical practitioners in the assessment and rehabilitation of people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is discussed. A pilot-study has been undertaken on a prototype VR assessment tool. The design involved nine occupational therapists with expertise in the care of traumatic brain injured patients and one (computer experienced) patient. The aim was to begin a dialogue and to ascertain the potential of a VR system. A common method for occupational therapists to assess function and ability is to ask a patient to brew coffee. From the performance of such a task, an individual’s “functional signature” can be determined. The prototype was built using Superscape, a personal computer based VR system, to be close to the real coffee making task, including effects of making mistakes, realistic graphics and sound effects. The world was designed to be as easy to use and intuitive as possible, though problems of mental abstraction level, transfer of training and realistic interaction have yet to be resolved. The comments from the test participants have highlighted problem areas, given positive insight and pointed out other scenarios where VR may be of use in the rehabilitation of people with a traumatic brain injury.

    • The risk of gastric stump carcinoma is increased 15-20 years after gastric resection for benign disease. Reflux of duodenal juice, bacterial overgrowth and formation of N-nitroso compounds are possible etiological factors. There is a geographical variation in the incidence of gastric cancer, possibly explained by differences in food intake. Experimentally it is possible to induce gastric stump carcinoma in rats without the addition of exogenous carcinogens. The aim of this study was: 1) to find the incidence of gastric carcinoma in rats subjected to BII resection and followed for 10 months, and 2) to examine if acetic acid, a common dietary factor, could influence the development of gastric carcinoma. Amongst BII-operated male Wistar rats, infiltrating carcinoma was found in 5/20 on a normal diet and in 5/24 exposed to acetic acid (NS). Benign mucosal changes were seen in 12/20 and 16/24 respectively (NS). With the exception of a profound inflammation in one sham-operated animal, no mucosal pathological changes were found in 24 sham-operated and 24 control animals where no operation was performed.

    • A group of worldwide virtual reality and health-care researchers have decided to combine their efforts in a multidisciplinary project titled VETERAN – virtual environments in the diagnosis, prevention and intervention of age-related diseases. The main goal of the VETERAN project is the tuning and testing of different virtual environments, designed to address the cognitive/functional impairments that may occur due to the aging process and age-related disorders. In particular the developed modules will address the problems commonly found in the following pathologies that have a strong impact on the elderly health care policy: Alzheimer’s disease and other senile dementias; stroke and unilateral spatial neglect; mobility-related accidents within specific environments (e.g., falls, shocks). The project will focus on research into clinical aspects of age-related diseases and disorders of high morbidity and specifically target goals of prevention, treatment, or delay in onset. Another goal of the VETERAN project is to define and develop new protocols and tools to be used for general rehabilitation purposes. These tools will aim to provide systematic restorative training within the context of functionally relevant, ecologically valid simulated environments This approach is hoped to optimize the degree of transfer of training and/or generalization of learning to the person’s real world environment.

    • We present new results from global VLBI observations of the highly active blazar OJ287 at 7 and 3 mm wavelengths. We show the first map of the mas to sub-mas structure of OJ287 at 43 GHz and discuss this image in the context with models of the source structure seen at 100 GHz.
