  • ‘Time for Conflict Prevention Across the Taiwan Strait’
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: China Brief. ; 8:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 2008 presidential election, the Nationalist KMT has regained the government control in Taiwan. But this does not resolve the fundamental dilemma between Beijing´s one-China principle and Taipei´s claim of de facto sovereignty. The US-China co-management, a prevailing concept among pro-Beijing scholars and government officials, has been counter-productive in the longer-term in its efforts to muddle through the situation. More creative and innovative approach is needed to solve the cross-Strait relationship problem in a fundamental and sustainable manner.

  • Sound experts’ perspectives on astronomy sonification projects
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Astronomy. - : Springer Nature. - 2397-3366. ; 6:11, s. 1249-1255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Audible Universe project aims to create dialogue between two scientific domains investigating two distinct research objects: stars and sound. It has been instantiated within a collaborative workshop that began to mutually acculturate the two communities, by sharing and transmitting respective knowledge, skills and practices. One main outcome of this exchange was a global view on the astronomical data sonification paradigm for observing the diversity of tools, uses and users (including visually impaired people), but also the current limitations and potential methods of improvement. From this viewpoint, here we present basic elements gathered and contextualized by sound experts in their respective fields (sound perception/cognition, sound design, psychoacoustics, experimental psychology), to anchor sonification for astronomy in a more well informed, methodological and creative process.

  • The suppressive effect of renewables on nuclear energy : implications for OECD countries
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Environmental Economics and Policy Studies. - : SPRINGER. - 1432-847X .- 1867-383X. ; 22:2, s. 247-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the impact of renewables on nuclear energy consumption in 15 OECD countries over the period 1991-2015. We find that the share of renewables (in total electricity production) has negative long-run effects on both nuclear energy consumption per capita and the share of nuclear energy (in total electricity production) while controlling for real GDP per capita, the proportion of carbon emissions from electricity production, and energy dependency. By taking proper account of both cross-section dependence and heterogeneity in the error-correction models, we find that a one percentage point increase in the share of renewables is associated with a 1.8% decrease in nuclear energy consumption per capita and a 2.7% decrease in the share of nuclear energy. Two main implications emerge. First, our results indicate a suppressive effect of renewables on nuclear energy in electric power generation, raising the possibility of restraining installed nuclear capacity through sustained penetration of renewables in OECD countries. Second, our results suggest the limited ability to replace nuclear energy with renewables in electric power generation. As a consequence, raising the share of renewables by rapidly deploying renewable energy technologies on a massive scale may not lead to the intended outcome of greatly reducing the dependence on nuclear energy in OECD countries.

  • Out with the new, in with the old! Revitalizing existing communities for sustainability and subjective wellbeing
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urbanisation as a megatrend shows no signs of weakening globally, or in the Nordic countries. At the same time, the overwhelming majority of environmental impacts are generated in cities. This derives from the economic growth generated by cities, as the decoupling of economic activity from environmental impacts has not been successful to date. Moreover, from a built environment perspective, urbanization has led to both housing crises in major cities, and a large amount of vacant buildings in rural areas. An enormous amount of environmental and economic resources is tied to these vacant buildings, and simultaneously, costly new construction with major environmental impacts takes place in cities. For environmental considerations alone, revitalizing communities outside major cities should be a policy goal. Another consideration relates to social sustainability, namely, the perceived happiness and subjective wellbeing of people. Research has shown subjective wellbeing to be on a higher level in smaller communities than in major cities. Revitalization would require financial incentives, but also enablers, like the utilization of new technologies. Digitalizationalready allows time and space independent work. The overall servitization of society, along with advances in e.g. farming technology have the potential to bring new life outside major cities in the Nordic countries. A key enabler, and a necessity, is the repurposing of existing buildings for new uses. This research presents a typology for sustainable and liveable communities in the Nordic countries. The research employs mixed methods and a case study design. Cases are selected among Nordic communities where successful revitalization has occurred. The selected case studies are explored in detail with qualitative means, including interviews and future studies methods. The qualitative methods are complemented with quantitative comparisons of e.g. population and employment structures, accessibility, and temporal development. Finland, Norway, and Sweden are all in different phases of urbanization, which provides a fruitful basis for comparison. A typology for sustainable communities is constructed as a synthesis of the findings. The research incorporates elements fromurban and future studies, as well as real estate and sustainability management. The findings allow researchers to expand their thinking on urban sustainability, beyond the densely populated major cities, toward smaller communities. Furthermore, the findings give policy makers and authorities practical ideas to drive revitalization in their respective regions.

  • A review of the scope and measurement of postoperative quality of recovery
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Anaesthesia. - Hoboken, USA : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0003-2409 .- 1365-2044. ; 69:11, s. 1266-1278
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To date, postoperative quality of recovery lacks a universally accepted definition and assessment technique. Current quality of recovery assessment tools vary in their development, breadth of assessment, validation, use of continuous vs dichotomous outcomes and focus on individual vs group recovery. They have progressed from identifying pure restitution of physiological parameters to multidimensional assessments of postoperative function and patient-focused outcomes. This review focuses on the progression of these tools towards an as yet unreached ideal that would provide multidimensional assessment of recovery over time at the individual and group level. A literature search identified 11 unique recovery assessment tools. The Postoperative Quality of Recovery Scale assesses recovery in multiple domains, including physiological, nociceptive, emotive, activities of daily living, cognition and patient satisfaction. It addresses recovery over time and compares individual patient data with base line, thus describing resumption of capacities and is an acceptable method for identification of individual patient recovery.

  • A Population Shift between Sparsely Populated Folding Intermediates Determines Amyloidogenicity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 138:19, s. 6271-6280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The balance between protein folding and misfolding is a crucial determinant of amyloid assembly. Transient intermediates that are sparsely populated during protein folding have been identified as key players in amyloid aggregation. However, due to their ephemeral nature, structural characterization of these species remains challenging. Here, using the power of nonuniformly sampled NMR methods we investigate the folding pathway of amyloidogenic and nonamyloidogenic variants of beta(2)-microglobulin (beta(2)m) in atomic detail. Despite folding via common intermediate states, we show that the decreased population of the aggregation-prone I-Trans state and population of a less stable, more dynamic species ablate amyloid formation by increasing the energy barrier for amyloid assembly. The results show that subtle changes in conformational dynamics can have a dramatic effect in determining whether a protein is amyloidogenic, without perturbation of the mechanism of protein folding.
