  • Precise Determination of the Unperturbed B8 Neutrino Spectrum
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Phys. Rev. Lett.. ; 108:16, s. Art. no. 162502-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A measurement of the final state distribution of the 8B beta decay, obtained by implanting a 8B beam in a double-sided silicon strip detector, is reported here. The present spectrum is consistent with a recent independent precise measurement performed by our collaboration at the IGISOL facility, Jyvaskyla [O. S.Kirsebom et al., Phys. Rev. C 83, 065802 (2011)]. It shows discrepancies with previously measuredspectra, leading to differences in the derived neutrino spectrum. Thanks to a low detection threshold, theneutrino spectrum is for the first time directly extracted from the measured final state distribution, thusavoiding the uncertainties related to the extrapolation of R-matrix fits. Combined with the IGISOL data, this leads to an improvement of the overall errors and the extension of the neutrino spectrum at highenergy. The new unperturbed neutrino spectrum represents a benchmark for future measurements of thesolar neutrino flux as a function of energy.

  • Observations of the radial velocity of the Sun as measured with the novel SONG spectrograph : results from a 1-week campaign
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics, Conference Series. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 440, s. 012051-012051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deployment of the prototype node of the SONG project took place in April 2012 at Observatorio del Teide (Canary Islands). Its key instrument (echelle spectrograph) was installed and operational a few weeks later while its 1 m feeding telescope suffered a considerable delay to meet the required specifications. Using a fibre-feed, solar light could be fed to the spectrograph and we carried out a 1-week observing campaign in June 2012 to evaluate its performance for measuring precision radial velocities. In this work we present the first results of this campaign by comparing the sensitivity of the SONG spectrograph with other helioseismology reference instruments (Mark-I and GOLF) when simultaneous data are considered.

  • Description and performance of an electron-ion coincidence TOF spectrometer used at the Brazilian synchrotron facility LNLS
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier BV. - 0368-2048 .- 1873-2526. ; 180:1-3, s. 6-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the characteristics and performance of a Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (TOF-MS) for coincidence measurements between electrons and ions that has been developed jointly in Sweden and Brazil. The spectrometer, used for studies of inner-shell photoexcitation of molecules in the gas-phase, has been optimized by implementing ion and electron lenses to allow the use of relatively small diameter detectors. Simulations were performed to understand the lens performance and they show that ions (electrons) could be collected without angular discrimination with a maximum kinetic energy up to ten (two) times higher than without the lens actions. A rotary vacuum chamber allows the spectrometer axis to be positioned at different angles relative to the polarization vector of the excitation beam. An important characteristic of the apparatus is that the acquisition setup allows a multi-hit capability with 1 ns resolution. Hereby, Photoelectron-Photoion-Photoion Coincidence (PEPIPICO) measurements can be performed on molecules containing two or more atoms of equal mass. A method to obtain experimental detection efficiencies of a single ion and one of one, two or three electrons has been developed. A systematic study of the interaction region has been performed to determine the shape of the photon and gas beams. Measurements on molecular nitrogen demonstrate the spectrometer's ability to resolve fragments with the same charge to mass ratio arriving within only a few ns. Simulations and experimental results of fragmentation of two singly charged cation nitrogen atoms agree, confirming that the spectrometer performance is well understood. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. • Scandiatransplant report 2009.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Transplantation proceedings. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-2623 .- 0041-1345. ; 42:10, s. 4429-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scandiatransplant is the Nordic organ exchange organization that has existed for 41 years by a close collaboration between transplant centers. It has been valuable to ensure the optimal usage of available organs for transplantation. Analyzing the database for the past 15 years (1995-2009) revealed that the fraction of organ donors in the age category 60 to 90 years has increased considerably. The number of retrieved organs from deceased donors increased for kidney, liver, and lungs but only slightly for hearts. In the last time period, the mean number of organs retrieved per deceased donor counting only those having a recipient increased to 3.7 for younger donors and to 2.6 from the older group. In 2009, the STAMP (Scandiatransplant acceptable mismatch program) was launched to help highly immunized kidney patients. In 2009, kidney transplantations exhibited for Norway, 60 per million people (pmp); more than 40 pmp for Sweden and for Denmark; approximately 35 pmp for Finland; and more than 20 pmp for the living donor kidney transplantations in Iceland. The best year ever within Scandiatransplant with respect to total number of organ transplantations from deceased and living donors was 2009.

  • Clinical, neuroimaging and neurophysiological features in addicts with manganese-ephedrone exposure
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Hindawi Limited. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 121:4, s. 237-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective - To identify biomarkers supporting the clinical diagnosis of manganism in patients several years after exposure to manganese (Mn). Methods - Neurophysiological examinations, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single-photon emission computed tomography and fluorodeoxyglycose (FDG) positron emission tomography were performed in four former ephedrone addicts with extrapyramidal symptoms. Results - Peripheral nervous system was not affected. No patients had reduced uptake of (123)I Ioflupane in the striatum. MRI signal intensities were slightly changed in the basal ganglia. All patients showed a widespread, but not uniform, pathological pattern of FDG uptake with changes mainly located to the central part of the brain including the basal ganglia and the surrounding white matter. Conclusions - Presynaptic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway are intact in Mn-induced parkinsonism after prolonged abstinence from ephedrone. The diagnosis is principally based on clinical signs and the history of drug abuse.

  • Association of vitamin D status with arterial blood pressure and hypertension risk: a mendelian randomisation study.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The lancet. Diabetes & endocrinology. - 2213-8595 .- 2213-8587. ; 2:9, s. 719-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Low plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentration is associated with high arterial blood pressure and hypertension risk, but whether this association is causal is unknown. We used a mendelian randomisation approach to test whether 25(OH)D concentration is causally associated with blood pressure and hypertension risk. Methods In this mendelian randomisation study, we generated an allele score (25[OH]D synthesis score) based on variants of genes that affect 25(OH)D synthesis or substrate availability (CYP2R1 and DHCR7), which we used as a proxy for 25(OH)D concentration. We meta-analysed data for up to 108173 individuals from 35 studies in the D-CarDia collaboration to investigate associations between the allele score and blood pressure measurements. We complemented these analyses with previously published summary statistics from the International Consortium on Blood Pressure (ICBP), the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium, and the Global Blood Pressure Genetics (Global BPGen) consortium. Findings In phenotypic analyses (up to n=49363), increased 25(OH)D concentration was associated with decreased systolic blood pressure (β per 10% increase, −0·12 mm Hg, 95% CI −0·20 to −0·04; p=0·003) and reduced odds of hypertension (odds ratio [OR] 0·98, 95% CI 0·97–0·99; p=0·0003), but not with decreased diastolic blood pressure (β per 10% increase, −0·02 mm Hg, −0·08 to 0·03; p=0·37). In meta-analyses in which we combined data from D-CarDia and the ICBP (n=146581, after exclusion of overlapping studies), each 25(OH)D-increasing allele of the synthesis score was associated with a change of −0·10 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure (−0·21 to −0·0001; p=0·0498) and a change of −0·08 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure (−0·15 to −0·02; p=0·01). When D-CarDia and consortia data for hypertension were meta-analysed together (n=142255), the synthesis score was associated with a reduced odds of hypertension (OR per allele, 0·98, 0·96–0·99; p=0·001). In instrumental variable analysis, each 10% increase in genetically instrumented 25(OH)D concentration was associated with a change of −0·29 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure (−0·52 to −0·07; p=0·01), a change of −0·37 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure (−0·73 to 0·003; p=0·052), and an 8·1% decreased odds of hypertension (OR 0·92, 0·87–0·97; p=0·002). Interpretation Increased plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D might reduce the risk of hypertension. This finding warrants further investigation in an independent, similarly powered study.
