  • Enrolment in labour market training programmes
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Labour. - : Wiley. - 1121-7081 .- 1467-9914. ; 10:1, s. 193-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The specification of a model for selection to labour market training is studied. Based on present value maximization, it is demonstrated that frequently adopted specifications of wage equations yield selection models containing a difference between alternative wage rates paid in the training period. In addition, the training effect on future wage rates can be sign determined. Using this, we test the hypothesis of present value maximization. A test that is robust against omitted variables and heteroskedasticity is used. Based on a sample of unemployed Swedish workers, we find positive training effects for most sub-groups.

  • Conjugacy of Coxeter elements
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. - 1097-1440 .- 1077-8926. ; 16:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For a Coxeter group (W, S), a permutation of the set S is called a Coxeter word and the group element represented by the product is called a Coxeter element. Moving the first letter to the end of the word is called a rotation and two Coxeter elements are rotation equivalent if their words can be transformed into each other through a sequence of rotations and legal commutations. We prove that Coxeter elements are conjugate if and only if they are rotation equivalent. This was known for some special cases but not for Coxeter groups in general.

  • Homocysteine is related to neopterin and endothelin-1 in plasma of subjects with disturbed glucose metabolism and reference subjects
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Angiology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0003-3197 .- 1940-1574. ; 51:6, s. 489-497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for vascular disease. In order to evaluate relations between hyperhomocysteinemia and endothelial and leukocyte function, the investigators related homocysteine to indices of endothelial function (plasma endothelin-1 [p-ET-1] and intraplatelet levels of the nitric oxide [NO] and prostacyclin mediators 3'-5' guanosine monophosphate [cGMP] and cyclic 3'-5' adenosine monophosphate [cAMP]) and the monocyte-derived inflammatory mediator neopterin in 168 men (mean age 69, range 49-72 years) with disturbed glucose metabolism and a reference group of 52 male subjects (mean age 70, range 61-79 years). Among the 168 patients with disturbed glucose metabolism plasma (p)-homocysteine correlated- significantly with age (r = 0.20; p<0.01), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) (r = 0.17; p<0.05), triglycerides (r = 0.20; p<0.05), intraplatelet GMP (r = 0.16; p<0.05), p-ET-1 (r = 0.21; p<0.05), and p-neopterin (r = 0.31; p<0.001). The correlation between p-homocysteine and p-ET-1 persisted (p<0.01) in multiple regression analysis. Among the 52 reference subjects p- homocysteine correlated significantly with p-ET-1 (r = 0.32; p<0.05) and p- neopterin (r = 0.37; p<0.01). The correlation between p-homocysteine and p- neopterin persisted (p<0.05) in multiple regression analysis. In conclusion, homocysteine is related to neopterin and endothelin-1 in plasma of subjects with disturbed glucose metabolism and in reference subjects, suggesting that homocysteine exerts its deleterious effects on vascular function through interference with endothelial and leukocyte function.

  • Editors publishing in their own journals : A systematic review of prevalence and a discussion of normative aspects
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Learned Publishing. - : Wiley. - 0953-1513 .- 1741-4857. ; 35:2, s. 229-240
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Journal editors are the main gatekeepers in scientific publishing. Yet there is a concern that they may receive preferential treatment when submitting manuscripts to their own journals. The prevalence of such self-publishing is not known, nor the consequences for reliability and trustworthiness of published research. This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the prevalence of editors publishing in their own journals and to conduct a normative ethical analysis of this practice. A systematic review was performed using the following databases: Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus and Web of Science. Articles that provided primary data about editors publishing in own journals were included. We identified 15 studies meeting inclusion criteria. There was large variability of self-publishing across fields, journals and editors, ranging from those who never published in their own journal to those publishing extensively in their own journal. Many studies suffered from serious methodological limitations. Nevertheless, our results show that there are settings where levels of self-publication are very high. We recommend that editors-in-chief and associate editors who have considerable power in journals refrain from publishing research articles in their own journals. Journals should have clear processes in place about the treatment of articles submitted by editorial board members.

  • Practical matters, rather than lack of trust, motivate non-participation in a long-term cohort trial
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Diabetes. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1399-543X .- 1399-5448. ; 10:6, s. 408-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the importance of trust in researchers and other reasons that participating parents, former participants, and non-participants had for participating, or not participating, in a longitudinal cohort study on prediction and development of diabetes in children. Study design: A questionnaire addressing each of these groups, where respondents graded the importance of a set of listed reasons for participating/not participating, was randomly distributed to 2500 families in the All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) study region with children born between 1997 and 1999. Results: Lack of trust was not a central factor to a great majority of respondents who decided not to participate in the ABIS study or who later decided to opt out. Practical matters, like blood sampling and lack of time, were important factors to many more. Yet, four fifths of those who still participate in the ABIS study stated trust in the researchers to be an important factor to their initial decision to participate. Conclusions: Trust in researchers may be a necessary prerequisite in order for people to be willing to participate in research, but practical matters such as time that has to be spent or pain involved in collecting blood were more important factors than lack of trust in explaining opt out in relation to the ABIS study.

  • Stochasticity in the adaptive dynamics of evolution: the bare bones
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Dynamics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1751-3758 .- 1751-3766. ; 5:2, s. 147-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First a population model with one single type of individuals is considered. Individuals reproduce asexually by splitting into two, with a population size dependent probability. Population extinction, growth and persistence are studied. Subsequently results are extended to such a population with two competing morphs. Results are applied to a simple model, where morphs arise through mutation. The movement in trait space of a monomorphic population and its possible branching into polymorphism are discussed. This is a first report. It purports to display the basic conceptual structure of a simple exact probabilistic formulation of adaptive dynamics.
