  • Tidal deformations of neutron stars : The role of stratification and elasticity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - College Park, MD : American Physical Society. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 84:10, s. 103006-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the response of neutron stars to the tidal interaction in a compact binary system, as encoded in the Love number associated with the induced deformation. This problem is of interest for gravitational-wave astronomy as there may be a detectable imprint on the signal from the late stages of binary coalescence. Previous work has focused on simple barotropic neutron star models, providing an understanding of the role of the stellar compactness and overall density profile. We add realism to the discussion by developing the framework required to model stars with varying composition and an elastic crust. These effects are not expected to be significant for the next generation of detectors, but it is nevertheless useful to be able to quantify them. Our results show that (perhaps surprisingly) internal stratification has no impact whatsoever on the Love number. We also show that crust elasticity provides a (predictably) small correction to existing models.

  • Surgical Predictors of Early Revision Surgery After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Results From the Swedish National Knee Ligament Register on 13,102 Patients.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The American journal of sports medicine. - : SAGE Publications. - 1552-3365 .- 0363-5465. ; 42:7, s. 1574-1582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND:An important objective of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) registries is to detect and report early graft failure and revision surgery after ACL reconstruction. PURPOSE:To investigate surgical variables and identify predictors of revision surgery after ACL reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN:Prospective cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS:This prospective cohort study was based on data from the Swedish National Knee Ligament Register during the years 2005 through 2011. Eight surgical variables were investigated: graft selection, graft width, single-bundle or double-bundle techniques, femoral graft fixation, tibial graft fixation, injury-to-surgery interval, injuries to menisci, and injuries to cartilage. The primary endpoint was the 2-year incidence of revision surgery. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated and adjusted for confounders by use of multivariate statistics. RESULTS:A total of 13,102 patients were included (5541 women [42%] and 7561 men [58%]; P < .001). Hamstring tendon autografts accounted for 90% (11,764 patients) of all reconstructions, of which 96% were performed with a single-bundle technique (11,339 patients). Patellar tendon autografts accounted for the remaining 10% (1338 patients). At index reconstruction, observed injuries to menisci and cartilage were common (40% and 28%, respectively). The overall 2-year incidence of revision surgery was 1.60% (women, 1.57%; men, 1.63%; P = .854). Patients with metal interference screw fixation of a semitendinosus tendon autograft on the tibia had a significantly reduced risk of early revision surgery (RR = 0.32; 95% CI, 0.12-0.90; P = .031). CONCLUSION:Metal interference screw fixation of a semitendinosus tendon autograft on the tibia was an independent predictor of significantly lower 2-year incidence of revision surgery. Graft selection, graft width, a single-bundle or a double-bundle technique, femoral graft fixation, the injury-to-surgery interval, and meniscus injury were not predictors of early revision surgery.

  • Gravitational Waves from Color-Magnetic "Mountains" in Neutron Stars
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 109:8, s. 081103-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron stars may harbor the true ground state of matter in the form of strange quark matter. If present, this type of matter is expected to be a color superconductor, a consequence of quark pairing with respect to the color and flavor degrees of freedom. The stellar magnetic field threading the quark core becomes a color-magnetic admixture and, in the event that superconductivity is of type II, leads to the formation of color-magnetic vortices. In this Letter, we show that the volume-averaged color-magnetic vortex tension force should naturally lead to a significant degree of nonaxisymmetry in systems such as radio pulsars. We show that gravitational radiation from such color-magnetic mountains in young pulsars, such as the Crab and Vela, could be observable by the future Einstein Telescope, thus, becoming a probe of paired quark matter in neutron stars. The detectability threshold can be pushed up toward the sensitivity level of Advanced LIGO if we invoke an interior magnetic field about a factor ten stronger than the surface polar field.

  • Zebrafish as a model to study live mucus physiology
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dysfunctional mucus barriers can result in important pulmonary and gastrointestinal conditions, but model systems to study the underlying causes are largely missing. We identified and characterized five mucin homologues in zebrafish, and demonstrated a strategy for fluorescence labeling of one selected mucin. These tools can be used for in vivo experiments and in pharmacological and genetic screens to study the dynamics and mechanisms of mucosal physiology.

  • C-peptide in the classification of diabetes in children and adolescents
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Diabetes. - : John Wiley and Sons. - 1399-543X .- 1399-5448. ; 13:1, s. 45-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To report C-peptide results in newly diagnosed patients and the relation to clinical diagnosis of diabetes. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods: A nation-wide cohort, the Better Diabetes Diagnosis study was used to determine serum C-peptide at diagnosis in 2734 children and adolescents. Clinical data were collected at diagnosis and follow-up. C-peptide was determined in a validated and controlled time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults: The clinical classification of diabetes, before any information on human leukocyte antigen, islet autoantibodies, or C-peptide was received, was type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 93%, type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 1.9%, maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) in 0.8%, secondary diabetes (0.6%), while 3.3% could not be classified. In a random, non-fasting serum sample at diagnosis, 56% of the patients had a C-peptide value andgt; 0.2 nmol/L. Children classified as T2D had the highest mean C-peptide (1.83 + 1.23 nmol/L) followed by MODY (1.04 +/- 0.71 nmol/L) and T1D (0.28 +/- 0.25 nmol/L). Only 1/1037 children who had C-peptide andlt; 0.2 nmol/L at diagnosis was classified with a type of diabetes other than T1D. Predictive value of C-peptide andgt; 1.0 nmol/L for the classification of either T2D or MODY was 0.46 [confidence interval 0.37-0.58]. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusions: More than half of children with newly diagnosed diabetes have clinically important residual beta-cell function. As the clinical diagnosis is not always straightforward, a random C-peptide taken at diagnosis may help to classify diabetes. There is an obvious use for C-peptide determinations to evaluate beta-cell function in children with diabetes.
