  • Det var en lyckad semester! : Semesterfirande svenskars preferenser år 1938-1959
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This licentiate thesis analyzes preferences among Swedish vacationers during the period of 1938-1959. The aim of the thesis is to closely examine these preferences in order to contribute to a more fully developed understanding of holiday-related consumption during the period. The thesis provides an in-depth analysis of the contents of the preferences and also analyzes the kind of consumption related to those preferences. The material on which this thesis is based consists of written recollections gathered from informants who, in response to a list of questions, described their own, past holiday experiences. An important overall result is that holidaymakers desired change. Informants sought contrast to their everyday lives. The strong desire for change had an impact on all areas of holidaymaking. Informants believed that the best way to relax was through a complete break from their ordinary lives. They appreciated meeting new people, being in new places and seeing different natural surroundings than what they encountered on a daily basis. All this meant that they needed to go away. Consequently, travelling was highly appreciated by the informants. The strong desire for change and the different expressions this took has not been fully understood before, nor has it been known that travelling was of such importance already at this time. That change and travel were such important aspects of holiday life provided strong incentives for consumption. A journey often required several modes of consumption, not only those that were directly travel-related. Travelling promoted consumption in a dynamic manner.

  • A new quest for efficiency : the post war programme of the Federation of Swedish Wholesalers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Business and Economic History Online. - : Business History Conference. - 1941-7349. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the mid 1950s the activities of the Federation of Swedish Wholesalers (Sveriges Grossistförbund/SGF) were considered by the OEEC to be among the forerunners concerning the rationalization of European wholesaling. From the 1940s the SGF started to develop more systematic policies and activities to promote the rationalization of Swedish wholesaling. One important effort was the formation of the Wholesale Research Institute in 1943. Another was to produce and circulate publications, some aimed at the public, others for internal use, where measures to promote and implement means to create more efficient and profitable wholesale businesses were discussed. The focus of this paper is to analyze these publications, which I have labeled ”The Post War Program” of the SGF. The Post War Program of the SGF will be put into a wider context by discussing the general debate on rationalization of the distribution sector and also the important Post War Program of the Swedish Labor Movement, a program stressing the need for rationalization of the economy including arguments for increased government intervention or nationalization in case of markets failures.

  • An easy sell? The introduction of a deep frozen food system in Sweden 1945-1970
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Deep frozen food was one of the most important technological developments when the distribution system was modernised and rationalised in the post WW2 era. While the technique of cold storage and transports was developed and used already in the late 19th century, the boom in consumption of deep frozen food relied on the development of a unbroken distribution chain of frozen food from the producer to the final consumer, and this development did not take place in earnest in Europe until the 1940s and 1950s.Similar to the case of self-service Sweden was one the prime movers in Europe concerning the development of a system for deep frozen food. Pioneers such as Findus, producer of vegetables and berries, started production of deep frozen food already in the mid 1940s, while the major actors in the grocery trades started constructing cold stores in the late 1940s.The real challenge was however to convince the retailers and the customers (both private and commercial) to adopt the new technique and the new products and ultimately to install freezing equipment in the stores and in their homes or in restaurants and canteens. This development was more gradual over the 1950s and 1960s, although there was an explosion of the consumption of deep frozen food in the 1950s.Similar to the development of self-service in Sweden, a number of actors was involved in the lobbying for and also practical development of the system of deep frozen food. One important actor was the producers of equipment for deep frozen products. Other actors involved were of course the producers, wholesalers and retailers of deep frozen food. Trade associations such as the Bureau for Deep Freezing was linking all above actors with for instance the The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, while also the trade associations of the retailers and wholesalers were active in the development process. The aim of this paper is to study the Swedish discussion surrounding the system of deep frozen food 1945-1970. I will use journals and possibly also business archives from the actors involved in the discussion. The study will show what arguments for and possibly also against deep frozen food that was used in order to further the development of the system of deep frozen food in Sweden.

  • Mellan bruk och bonde : Organisationen av spannmålshandeln i Västmanlands län 1770-1870
  • 2012
Betydande volymer spannmål fördes in via Mälaren.
