  • Microwave-assisted rapid characterization of lipase selectivities.
  • 2002
  • In: Journal of Biochemical and Biophysical Methods. - 0165-022X. ; 51:2, s. 115-120
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A rapid screening procedure for characterization of lipase selectivities using microwaves was developed. The rate of reaction of various commercial lipases (porcine pancreas, Mucor miehei, Candida rugosa, Pseudomonas cepacia) as well as lipases from laboratory isolates-Bacillus stearothermophilus and Burkholderia cepacia RGP-10 for triolein hydrolysis was 7- to 12-fold higher in a microwave oven as compared to that by pH stat. The esterification of sucrose/methanol and ascorbic acid with different fatty acids was also achieved within 30 s in a microwave using porcine pancreas, B. stearothermophilus SB-1 and B. cepacia RGP-10 lipases. The relative rates and selectivity of the lipases both for hydrolytic and synthesis reactions remains unaltered. However, the rate of reaction was dynamically enhanced when exposed to microwaves. Microwave-assisted enzyme catalysis can become an attractive procedure for rapid characterization of large number of enzyme samples and substrates, which otherwise is a cumbersome and time-consuming exercise.

  • Volumetric properties and phase relations of silica - thermodynamic assessment
  • 2001
  • In: Journal of Alloys and Compounds. - 0925-8388 .- 1873-4669. ; 327:1-2, s. 253-262
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Taking into account various available experimental data, an improved internally consistent data set for the SiO2 system is obtained by thermodynamic assessment. The volumetric properties for SiO2 polymorphs are reassessed using the CALPHAD method. A two-coefficient expression is used to describe the thermal expansion and bulk modulus. For liquid phase, one equation is achieved in the temperature range of 298-4000 K either for thermal expansion or for bulk modulus. Phase diagrams have been calculated up to 40 GPa. It has been concluded that, in the pressure range lower than 20 GPa, there is no significant difference between the phase diagrams calculated by the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state (EOS) and by Murnaghan EOS.

  • Stability of KAlSi3O8 hollandite-type structure in the earth's lower mantle conditions
  • 2001
  • In: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276. ; 28:14, s. 2735-2738
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The stability of KAISi3O8 hollandite-type structure is investigated in a series of synthesis experiments between 20 and 95 GPa at 650(±50) °C and between 1200 to 2300 °C, using electrically- and laser-heated diamond anvil cells, respectively. Potassium feldspar transformed to a hollandite-type structure in the experimental pressure range from 20 to 95 GPa at temperatures between 1200 to 2300 °C, whereas it remained amorphous at 65(±5) GPa and 650(±50) °C. KAISi3O8 hollandite is, therefore, a stable phase under the pressure and temperature conditions of at least 2200 km deep in the lower mantle and could be an important host for potassium in that region.
