  • 2014. - 2

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scientific and technological inventions produced by universities and moved to the market by new firms represent an option increasingly used for wealth creation that departs from the transfer of knowledge generated from research (Carayannis et al., 1998; Siegel et al., 2003; Vohora et al., 2004; Clarysse et al., 2005; Lockett et al., 2005). In the past, this knowledge transfer from the university to the company was made through research contracts or patents, but in the last two decades spin-offs from universities have become an increasingly popular alternative for the exploitation of research outputs (Etzkowitz et al., 2000). This is partly due to a general societal and scholarly movement into an ëentrepreneurial societyí (Audretsch, 2009). The growing awareness over the past decades of the importance of new firms and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for economic development has stimulated Western governments (at all administrative levels) to provide policies and activities to support the creation of new businesses (Bercovitz and Feldman, 2006; Cassia et al., 2012; Honjo and Harada, 2006; Rothwell and Zegveld, 1982). For instance, Veciana (2007) studied how policies to support the creation of new businesses could have a positive impact on creating jobs, economic growth and innovation potential. Moreover, the transfer of universityñindustry knowledge has become one of the main factors underpinning European innovation policies (Mueller, 2006).

  • Using systematic reviews for hazard and risk assessment of endocrine disrupting chemicals
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Reviews in endocrine and metabolic disorders (Print). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1389-9155 .- 1573-2606. ; 16:4, s. 273-287
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in our environment contribute to hormonally related effects and diseases observed in human and wildlife populations has caused concern among decision makers and researchers alike. EDCs challenge principles traditionally applied in chemical risk assessment and the identification and assessment of these compounds has been a much debated topic during the last decade. State of the science reports and risk assessments of potential EDCs have been criticized for not using systematic and transparent approaches in the evaluation of evidence. In the fields of medicine and health care, systematic review methodologies have been developed and used to enable objectivity and transparency in the evaluation of scientific evidence for decision making. Lately, such approaches have also been promoted for use in the environmental health sciences and risk assessment of chemicals. Systematic review approaches could provide a tool for improving the evaluation of evidence for decision making regarding EDCs, e.g. by enabling systematic and transparent use of academic research data in this process. In this review we discuss the advantages and challenges of applying systematic review methodology in the identification and assessment of EDCs.

  • The development of delinquency and perceived friendship quality in adolescent best friendship dyads
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0091-0627 .- 1573-2835. ; 36:4, s. 471-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examines both the unique and the combined role of best friends' delinquency and perceived friendship quality in the development of adolescent delinquency. Questionnaire data were gathered from 435 Dutch adolescent best friends (mean age at first wave = 12.97) over a period of 5 years with annual assessments. Results showed that mean levels of delinquency and perceived friendship quality increased over time. Adolescent best friends were highly similar in both mean levels and changes in delinquency over time. For boys, similarity in mean level delinquency between best friends was higher than for girls. In addition, only for boys, friends' delinquency is associated with increases in adolescent delinquency over time, and adolescents' delinquency is associated with increases in friends' delinquency over time. No bidirectional longitudinal associations were found between perceived friendship quality and adolescent delinquency. No interaction effects between friendship quality and friends' delinquency on adolescent delinquency were found. Thus, findings were more in support of the differential association theory than of the social control theory.

  • No evidence of genetic benefits from extra-pair fertilisations in female sand martins (Riparia riparia)
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ornithology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2193-7192 .- 2193-7206. ; 148:2, s. 189-198
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic parentage studies of socially monogamous birds reveal a widespread prevalence of extra-pair paternity. Variation in extra-pair paternity among individuals may depend on how different individuals benefit from extra-pair fertilisations and on the opportunity to pursue extra-pair copulations. A long-term study of sand martins (Riparia riparia) in Hungary allowed us to examine patterns of extra-pair fertilisations in a large colony of over 3,000 breeding pairs with many known age individuals. We used multi-locus DNA fingerprinting to determine whether extra-pair fertilisations occur when females are paired to (1) presumably low quality mates, or (2) genetically similar or dissimilar mates, and whether extra-pair fertilisations result in offspring of higher quality. Extra-paternal young were found in 38% of 47 broods and comprised 19% of 190 offspring. Males that lost paternity did not differ significantly from others in age or body condition. Social mates of broods containing extra-pair offspring did not differ in genetic similarity from pairs without extra-pair offspring. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in body condition between extra-pair young and their maternal half-siblings. We were unable to assign paternity and therefore cannot exclude the possibility that extra-pair males differed from the within-pair males they cuckolded, in age, body condition or genetic similarity with the female. We found a positive relationship between paternity losses and breeding density, suggesting that low breeding density may constrain opportunities for seeking extra-pair copulations.

  • Application of Process Mining for Modelling Small Cell Lung Cancer Prognosis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics. - : IOS Press. - 0926-9630 .- 1879-8365. ; 302, s. 18-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process mining is a relatively new method that connects data science and process modelling. In the past years a series of applications with health care production data have been presented in process discovery, conformance check and system enhancement. In this paper we apply process mining on clinical oncological data with the purpose of studying survival outcomes and chemotherapy treatment decision in a real-world cohort of small cell lung cancer patients treated at Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden). The results highlighted the potential role of process mining in oncology to study prognosis and survival outcomes with longitudinal models directly extracted from clinical data derived from healthcare.
