  • Spatial and spectral characterization of a laser produced plasma source for extreme ultraviolet metrology
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 75:11, s. 4981-4988
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a laser produced plasma (LPP) source optimized for metrology and the results of its radiometric characterization. The presented (LPP) source can be used for reflectometry and spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range. For these applications, stable operation with high spectral photon yields high reliability in continuous operation and, to reach high spectral resolution, a small source size and high source point stability is necessary. For the characterization of the source, special instruments have been designed and calibrated using the soft x-ray radiometry beamline of the Physikalisch-Technische-Bundesanstalt at BESSY. These instruments are an imaging spectrometer, a double multilayer tool for in-band power measurements, a transmission slit grating spectrograph, and a pinhole camera. From the measurements a source size of 30 mumx55 mum (2sigma, horizontal by vertical) and a stability of better than 5 mum horizontally and 9 mum vertically were obtained. The source provides a flat continuous emission in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range around 13.4 nm and a spectral photon flux of up to 1*10(14)/(s sr 0.1 nm) at a pump laser pulse energy of 650 mJ. The shot-to-shot stability of the source is about 5% (1sigma) for laser pulse energies above 200 mJ. It is shown that an Au-LPP source provides spectrally reproducible emission with sufficient power at low debris conditions for the operation of a laboratory based EUV reflectometer and for spectroscopy.

  • Synergism between vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor contributes to angiogenesis and plasma extravasation in pathological conditions
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-170X .- 1078-8956. ; 7:5, s. 575-583
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) stimulates angiogenesis by activating VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2). The role of its homolog, placental growth factor (PlGF), remains unknown. Both VEGF and PlGF bind to VEGF receptor-1 (VEGFR-1), but it is unknown whether VEGFR-1, which exists as a soluble or a membrane-bound type, is an inert decoy or a signaling receptor for PlGF during angiogenesis. Here, we report that embryonic angiogenesis in mice was not affected by deficiency of PlGF (Pgf-/-). VEGF-B, another ligand of VEGFR-1, did not rescue development in Pgf-/- mice. However, loss of PlGF impaired angiogenesis, plasma extravasation and collateral growth during ischemia, inflammation, wound healing and cancer. Transplantation of wild-type bone marrow rescued the impaired angiogenesis and collateral growth in Pgf-/- mice, indicating that PlGF might have contributed to vessel growth in the adult by mobilizing bone-marrow-derived cells. The synergism between PlGF and VEGF was specific, as PlGF deficiency impaired the response to VEGF, but not to bFGF or histamine. VEGFR-1 was activated by PlGF, given that anti-VEGFR-1 antibodies and a Src-kinase inhibitor blocked the endothelial response to PlGF or VEGF/PlGF. By upregulating PlGF and the signaling subtype of VEGFR-1, endothelial cells amplify their responsiveness to VEGF during the 'angiogenic switch' in many pathological disorders.

  • Treatment aims and philosophy in the treatment of adolescent anorexia nervosa in Europe
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Eating Disorders Review. - : Wiley. - 1072-4133. ; 10:4, s. 271-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes the range of service provision and explores differences in treatment approaches and therapeutic aims, in the 12 countries participating in the European Union collaborative COST B6 Adolescent Project into the treatment of adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN). Following a number of group meetings, two questionnaires were administered, completed and returned by e-mail. The first questionnaire examined features of the services provided, including details of the numbers of patients seen, inpatient admission criteria and aspects of patient management. The second questionnaire contained a list Of 13 therapeutic aims, asking respondents to rank in order the six they considered most important in the first weeks of treatment. There was broad agreement between services concerning the need to offer a full spectrum of services in a range of settings. Nevertheless, there were significant differences in approaches, chiefly concerning the readiness to admit to hospital, the use of (individual or family) day units and the focus on weight restoration as opposed to therapeutic engagement. • Phonons and free-carrier properties of binary, ternary, and quaternary group-III nitride layers measured by infrared Spectroscopic Ellipsometry
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi. C, Current topics in solid state physics. - : Wiley. - 1610-1634 .- 1610-1642. ; 0:6 SPEC. ISS., s. 1750-1769
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This work reviews recent ellipsometric investigations of the infrared dielectric functions of binary, ternary, and quaternary group-III nitride films. Spectroscopic Ellipsometry in the mid-infrared range is employed for the first time to determine phonon and free-carrier properties of individual group-III nitride heterostructure components, including layers of some ten nanometer thickness. Assuming the effective carrier mass, the free-carrier concentration and mobility parameters can be quantified upon model analysis of the infrared dielectric function. In combination with Hall-effect measurements, the effective carrier masses for wurtzite n- and p-type GaN and n-type InN are obtained. The mode behavior of both the E1(TO) and A1(LO) phonons are determined for ternary compounds. For strain-sensitive phonon modes, the composition and strain dependences of the phonon frequencies are differentiated and quantified. Information on the crystal quality and compositional homogeneity of the films can be extracted from the phonon mode broadening parameters. A comprehensive IR dielectric function database of group-III nitride materials has been established and can be used for the analysis of complex thin-film heterostructures designed for optoelectronic device applications. Information on concentration and mobility of free carriers, thickness, alloy composition, average strain state, and crystal quality of individual sample constituents can be derived. © 2003 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
