  • Electron-lattice interactions in the perovskite LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 characterized by optical spectroscopy and LDA plus U calculations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X .- 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 80:7, s. 075103-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use resonance Raman scattering (incident photon energies between 1.8 and 4.13 eV), LDA+U calculations, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and oblique IR reflectivity to characterize the strong electron-phonon interactions in the disordered perovskite LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3. When the photon energy coincides with a Cr to Fe Mott-Hubbard transfer gap around 2.4 eV the electron-phonon interaction is manifested by a Franck-Condon effect with exceptional first-and higher order scattering of a local oxygen breathing mode. At higher incident energies we observe a superposition of Franck-Condon scattering and Frohlich interaction induced infrared active longitudinal optical two-phonon scattering activated mainly by O to Fe charge transfer. Our results establish LaFe0.5Cr0.5O3 as a model compound for research on electron-phonon interactions in strongly correlated complex systems and show that Franck-Condon scattering in complex solids is not limited to Jahn-Teller active compounds.

  • Interchanging Lexical information for a multilingual dictionary
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: AMIA Annual Symposium Proceedings. - Washington DC : AMIA Symposium; American Medical Informatics Association. ; , s. 31-35
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE:To facilitate the interchange of lexical information for multiple languages in the medical domain. To pave the way for the emergence of a generally available truly multilingual electronic dictionary in the medical domain.METHODS:An interchange format has to be neutral relative to the target languages. It has to be consistent with current needs of lexicon authors, present and future. An active interaction between six potential authors aimed to determine a common denominator striking the right balance between richness of content and ease of use for lexicon providers.RESULTS:A simple list of relevant attributes has been established and published. The format has the potential for collecting relevant parts of a future multilingual dictionary. An XML version is available.CONCLUSION:This effort makes feasible the exchange of lexical information between research groups. Interchange files are made available in a public repository. This procedure opens the door to a true multilingual dictionary, in the awareness that the exchange of lexical information is (only) a necessary first step, before structuring the corresponding entries in different languages.

  • Cross-Lingual Alignment of Medical Lexicons
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Language Resources and Evaluation. ; 2006, s. 5-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an approach for the creation of a multilingual medical dictionary for the biomedical domain. In a first step, available monolingual lexical resources are compiled into a common interchange format. Secondly, according to a linking format deciced by the authors, the cross-lingual mappings of lexical entries are added. We show how these mappings can be generated using a morpho-semantic term normalization engine, which captures intra- as well as interlingual synonymy relationships on the level of subwords.

  • Towards a Multilingual Medical Lexicon
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: AMIA 2006 Symposium Proceedings. - Washington D.C., USA : AMIA. ; , s. 534-538
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results of the collaboration of a multinational team of researchers from (computational) linguistics, medicine, and medical informatics with the goal of building a multilingual medical lexicon with high coverage and complete morpho-syntactic information. Monolingual lexical resources were collected and subsequently mapped between languages using a morpho-semantic term normalization engine, which captures intra- as well as interlingual synonymy relationships on the level of subwords.

  • Safe cosmetics without animal testing? Contributions of the EU Project Sens-it-iv
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal für Verbraucherschütz und Lebensmittelsicherheit. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1661-5867 .- 1661-5751. ; 4:suppl. 2, s. 41-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 7th Ammendment to the Cosmetics Directive of the European Commission (Directive 76/768/EEC2) bans the marketing of cosmetics containing animal-tested ingredients since March 2009. Excepted are only tests for repeated dose toxicity, for which the animal ban will come into effect by 2013. One major concern for cosmetics, i.e. the risk of containing skin (contact) sensitizers, has in the past been addressed almost exclusively by animal testing. It is this problem attracting the central interest of the integrated research project Sens-it-iv (Novel Testing Strategies for in vitro Assessment of Allergens, http://www.sens-it-iv.eu ), funded by the EC within framework 6 since October 2005. Here, the 28 Sens-it-iv partners from 10 European States present the 5 most promising types of in vitro assays selected for further refinement. These are: (1) a human epidermal equivalent (EE) model to rank contact allergens according to their sensitizing potency, (2) identification of contact sensitizers, including pro-haptens, through intracellular production of IL-18 by the human keratinocyte cell line NCTC 2544, (3) determination of activation markers such as CD86, CD54 and most prominently CXCL8 (IL-8) on/in dendritic cell lines, (4) contact sensitizer-specific migration of MUTZ Langerhans cells towards the chemokine CXCL12, and (5) the allergen-specific activation and proliferation of na < ve human T cells. Ongoing genomic and proteomic experiments are in the process of identifying larger sensitizer-specific biological marker signatures to be integrated into the above assays. We hope to supply the European control agencies with a basis for further validation of in vitro assays by the end of 2010.
