  • The potential of Λ and Ξ- studies with PANDA at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: p¯ p→ Λ¯ Λ and p¯ p→ Ξ¯ +Ξ-. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

  • Study of excited Ξ baryons with the P¯ ANDA detector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards N∗ and Δ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the N∗ and Δ spectra. The future antiproton experiment P¯ANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a Ξ¯ Ξ pair, for which production cross sections up to μb are expected in p¯p reactions. With a luminosity of L= 10 31 cm- 2 s- 1 in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of ∼106events/day. With a nearly 4 π detector acceptance, P¯ANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type p¯p → Ξ¯ +Ξ∗ - as well as p¯p → Ξ¯ ∗ +Ξ- with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between 3 and 5%. This allows high statistics data to be collected within a few weeks of data taking.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes a lethal case of leptospirosis that occurred in Southern Russia. TheLeptospirastrain was isolated and characterized using a microscopic agglutination test, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, targeted PCR, and high-throughput sequencing. We show that molecular and mass-spectrometry methods can be an alternative to conventional methods of leptospirosis diagnostics andLeptospirastudy, which require highly qualified staff and can be performed only at specialized laboratories. We also report the first whole genome ofL.interrogansisolated in Russia.

  • Genetic Diversity and Possible Origins of the Hepatitis B Virus in Siberian Natives
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Viruses. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4915. ; 14:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A total of 381 hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA sequences collected from nine groups of Siberian native populations were phylogenetically analyzed along with 179 HBV strains sampled in different urban populations of former western USSR republics and 50 strains from Central Asian republics and Mongolia. Different HBV subgenotypes predominated in various native Siberian populations. Subgenotype D1 was dominant in Altaian Kazakhs (100%), Tuvans (100%), and Teleuts (100%) of southern Siberia as well as in Dolgans and Nganasans (69%), who inhabit the polar Taimyr Peninsula. D2 was the most prevalent subgenotype in the combined group of Nenets, Komi, and Khants of the northern Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region (71%) and in Yakuts (36%) from northeastern Siberia. D3 was the main subgenotype in South Altaians (76%) and Buryats (40%) of southeastern Siberia, and in Chukchi (51%) of the Russian Far East. Subgenotype C2 was found in Taimyr (19%) and Chukchi (27%), while subgenotype A2 was common in Yakuts (33%). In contrast, D2 was dominant (56%) in urban populations of the former western USSR, and D1 (62%) in Central Asian republics and Mongolia. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the studied groups are epidemiologically isolated from each other and might have contracted HBV from different sources during the settlement of Siberia.

  • Wind Energy Potential in the Arctic and Subarctic Regions and Its Projected Change in the 21st Century Based on Regional Climate Model Simulations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Russian Meteorology and Hydrology. - 1068-3739 .- 1934-8096. ; 47:6, s. 428-436
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantitative estimates of changes in wind energy resources in the Arctic were obtained using the RCA4 regional climate model under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios for 2006–2099. The wind power density proportional to cubic wind speed was analyzed. The procedure for the model near-surface wind speed bias correction using ERA5 data as a reference with subsequent extrapolation of wind speed to the turbine height was applied to estimate the wind power density (WPD). According to the RCA4 simulations for the 21st century under both anthropogenic forcing scenarios, a noticeable increase in the WPD was noted, in particular, over the Barents, Kara, and Chukchi seas in winter. In summer, a general increase in the WPD is manifested over the Arctic Ocean. The changes are more significant under the RCP8.5 scenario with high anthropogenic forcing for the 21st century. According to model projections, an increase in the interdaily WPD variations does not generally lead to the deviations of wind speed to the values at which the operation of wind generators is unfeasible.

  • Cold ion energization at separatrices during magnetic reconnection
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - : AIP Publishing. - 1070-664X .- 1089-7674. ; 28:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Separatrices of magnetic reconnection host intense perpendicular Hall electric fields. The fields are produced by the decoupling of the ion and electron components and are associated with the in-plane electrostatic potential drop between the inflow and outflow regions. The width of these structures is typically less than the ion inertial length, which is small enough to demagnetize ions as they cross the layer. We investigate ion acceleration at separatrices by means of 2D particle-in-cell simulations of magnetic reconnection for two limiting cases: (1) a "GEM-like" setup (here GEM stands for geospace environmental modeling reconnection challenge) with the lobe ion thermal velocity equal to the thermal velocity of the initial current sheet ions, which is comparable to the Alfven velocity and (2) a "cold" ion setup, in which the temperature of the background lobe ions is 1/100 of the initial current sheet temperature. The separatrix Hall electric field is balanced by the ion inertia term in the cold background simulations. The effect is indicative of the quasi-steady local perpendicular acceleration. The electric field introduces a cross field beam of unmagnetized particles, which makes the ion distribution function strongly non-gyrotropic and susceptible to sub-ion scale instabilities. This acceleration mechanism nearly vanishes in the hot ion background simulations. Our particle-in-cell simulations are complemented by one-dimensional test particle calculations. They show that the hot ion particles experience energy-scattering after crossing the accelerating layer, whereas cold ions are uniformly energized up to the energies comparable to the electrostatic potential drop between the inflow and outflow regions.

  • Future projections of wind energy potentials in the arctic for the 21st century under the RCP8.5 scenario from regional climate models (Arctic-CORDEX)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Anthropocene. - 2213-3054. ; 44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Arctic has warmed more than twice the rate of the entire globe. To quantify possible climate change effects, we calculate wind energy potentials from a multi-model ensemble of Arctic-CORDEX. For this, we analyze future changes of wind power density (WPD) using an eleven-member multi-model ensemble. Impacts are estimated for two periods (2020-2049 and 2070-2099) of the 21st century under a high emission scenario (RCP8.5). The multi-model mean reveals an increase of seasonal WPD over the Arctic in the future decades. WPD variability across a range of temporal scales is projected to increase over the Arctic. The signal amplifies by the end of 21st century. Future changes in the frequency of wind speeds at 100 m not useable for wind energy production (wind speeds below 4 m/s or above 25 m/s) has been analyzed. The RCM ensemble simulates a more frequent occurrence of 100 m non-usable wind speeds for the wind-turbines over Scandinavia and selected land areas in Alaska, northern Russia and Canada. In contrast, non-usable wind speeds decrease over large parts of Eastern Siberia and in northern Alaska. Thus, our results indicate increased potential of the Arctic for the development and production of wind energy. Bias corrected and not corrected near-surface wind speed and WPD changes have been compared with each other. It has been found that both show the same sign of future change, but differ in magnitude of these changes. The role of sea-ice retreat and vegetation expansion in the Arctic in future on near-surface wind speed variability has been also assessed. Surface roughness through sea-ice and vegetation changes may significantly impact on WPD variability in the Arctic.

  • Case Report: Two New Cases of Autosomal-Recessive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Associated With TRIM63-Compound Heterozygous Variant
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in genetics. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-8021. ; 13, s. 743472-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the most common hereditary diseases, and it is associated with fatal complications. The clinical heterogeneity of HCM requires risk prediction models to identify patients at a high risk of adverse events. Most HCM cases are caused by mutations in genes encoding sarcomere proteins. However, HCM is associated with rare genetic variants with limited data about its clinical course and prognosis, and existing risk prediction models are not validated for such patients’ cohorts. TRIM63 is one of the rare genes recently described as a cause of HCM with autosomal-recessive inheritance. Herein, we present two cases of HCM associated with TRIM63-compound heterozygous variants in young male sportsmen. They demonstrated progressively marked hypertrophy, advanced diastolic dysfunction, a significant degree of fibrosis detected by magnetic resonance imaging, and clear indications for implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. One of the cases includes the first description of TRIM63-HCM with extreme hypertrophy. The presented cases are discussed in light of molecular consequences that might underlie cardiac and muscle phenotype in patients with mutations of TRIM63, the master regulator of striated muscle mass.

  • An observational study on the molecular profiling of primary melanomas reveals a progression dependence on mitochondrial activation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cancers. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6694. ; 13:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Melanoma in advanced stages is one of the most aggressive tumors and the deadliest of skin cancers. To date, the histopathological staging focuses on tumor thickness, and clinical staging is a major estimate of the clinical behavior of primary melanoma. Here we report on an observational study with in‐depth molecular profiling at the protein level including post-translational modifications (PTMs) on eleven primary tumors from melanoma patients. Global proteomics, phosphoproteomics, and acetylomics were performed on each sample. We observed an up‐regulation of key mitochondrial functions, including the mitochondrial translation machinery and the down‐regulation of structural proteins involved in cell adhesion, the cytoskeleton organization, and epidermis development, which dictates the progression of the disease. Additionally, the PTM level pathways related to RNA processing and transport, as well as chromatin organization, were dysregulated in relation to the progression of melanoma. Most of the pathways dysregulated in this cohort were enriched in genes differentially expressed at the transcript level when similar groups are compared or metastasis to primary melanomas. At the genome level, we found significant differences in the mutation profiles between metastatic and primary melanomas. Our findings also highlighted sex‐related differences in the molecular profiles. Remarkably, primary melanomas in women showed higher levels of antigen processing and presentation, and activation of the immune system response. Our results provide novel insights, relevant for developing personalized precision treatments for melanoma patients.
