  • TEFIS: A Single Access Point for Conducting Multifaceted Experiments on Heterogeneous Test Facilities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Computer Networks. - : Elsevier BV. - 1389-1286 .- 1872-7069. ; 63, s. 147-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A few years ago, an experimental facility composed of networking gear and simulation tools was sufficient for testing the main features of a prototype before the final product could be launched to the Internet market. This paradigm has certainly changed, but the lack of platforms enabling the realistic assessment of the different facets of a product, including cross-cutting trials across different testbeds, poses strong limitations for researchers and developers. In light of this, we present an open platform that offers a versatile combination of heterogeneous experimental facilities called “TEstbed for Future Internet Services” (TEFIS). TEFIS provides a single access point for conducting cutting-edge experiments on testbeds that supply different capabilities, including testbeds dedicated to network performance, software performance, grid computing, and living labs. We shall show that TEFIS covers the entire life-cycle of a multifaceted experiment, with the advantage that a single testrun can seamlessly execute across different experimental facilities. In order to demonstrate the potential and versatility of the TEFIS platform, we describe the deployment of four distinct experiments and provide a set of results highlighting the benefits of using TEFIS. The experiments described in this article cover: i) the experimentation with an open API called OPENER (which is an open and programmable environment for managing experimentation with SDN applications); ii) an application for skiers and tourists at the Megève ski resort in France; iii) an application that can dynamically adapt the Quality of Experience (QoE) of multimedia services for mobile users; and iv) an augmented reality workspace for remote education and learning purposes based on videoconferencing.

  • Real options analysis of investment in carbon capture and sequestration technology
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Computational Management Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1619-697X .- 1619-6988. ; 9:1, s. 109-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among a comprehensive scope of mitigation measures for climate change, CO 2 capture and sequestration (CCS) plays a potentially significant role in industrialised countries. In this paper, we develop an analytical real options model that values the choice between two emissions-reduction technologies available to a coal-fired power plant. Specifically, the plant owner may decide to invest in either full CCS (FCCS) or partial CCS (PCCS) retrofits given uncertain electricity, CO 2, and coal prices. We first assess the opportunity to upgrade to each technology independently by determining the option value of installing a CCS unit as a function of CO 2 and fuel prices. Next, we value the option of investing in either FCCS or PCCS technology. If the volatilities of the prices are low enough, then the investment region is dichotomous, which implies that for a given fuel price, retrofitting to the FCCS (PCCS) technology is optimal if the CO 2 price increases (decreases) sufficiently. The numerical examples provided in this paper using current market data suggest that neither retrofit is optimal immediately. Finally, we observe that the optimal stopping boundaries are highly sensitive to CO 2 price volatility.

  • Relationships between cardiac magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities in the inter-ventricular septum and Selvester QRS scoring criteria for anterior-septal myocardial infarction in patients with right ventricular volume overload
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electrocardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-8430 .- 0022-0736. ; 46:3, s. 256-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Patients with ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASDs) were studied to determine the prevalence of Selvester anteroseptal myocardial infarction QRS points, and to test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between these criteria and thinning and/or scarring of the inter-ventricular septum (IVS). Methods: Demographic, electrocardiographic (ECG), and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) data were acquired on 46 patients with a secundum ASD closed percutaneously. Selvester QRS scoring on patient ECGs was performed for areas representing the anteroseptal region of the left ventricle (LV). The IVS to LV free wall thickness ratio was used to assess thinning of the IVS while late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) of the IVS was used for scarring; both using CMR. Results: Twenty-four (52%) patients scored Selvester QRS points in the anteroseptal region with a mean score of 2.6 +/- 1.8. The mean IVS/LV free wall thickness ratio at the basal level and mid-ventricular level was 1.1 +/- 0.3 and 1.3 +/- 0.3, respectively. There was no association of Selvester QRS points with IVS/LV free wall ratio at the basal (p= 0.59) or mid-ventricular (p=0.13) levels. The one patient with LGE in the IVS had 4 Selvester anteroseptal QRS points. Conclusion: The results of our study demonstrate that in our patient population there is a 52% prevalence of Selvester anteroseptal QRS points which are due to thinning and/or scarring of the IVS in only one patient. • A chemically modified α-amylase with a molten-globule state has entropically driven enhanced thermal stability
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Protein Engineering Design & Selection. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1741-0126 .- 1741-0134. ; 23:10, s. 769-780
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The thermostability properties of TAA were investigated by chemically modifying carboxyl groups on the surface of the enzyme with AMEs. The TAAMOD exhibited a 200 improvement in starch-hydrolyzing productivity at 60°C. By studying the kinetic, thermodynamic and biophysical properties, we found that TAAMOD had formed a thermostable, MG state, in which the unfolding of the tertiary structure preceded that of the secondary structure by at least 20°C. The X-ray crystal structure of TAAMOD revealed no new permanent interactions (electrostatic or other) resulting from the modification. By deriving thermodynamic activation parameters of TAAMOD, we rationalised that thermostabilisation have been caused by a decrease in the entropy of the transition state, rather than being enthalpically driven. Far-UV CD shows that the origin of decreased entropy may have arisen from a higher helical content of TAAMOD. This study provides new insight into the intriguing properties of an MG state resulting from the chemical modification of TAA.
