    • The level scheme of 157Er has been extended from a spin region where the nucleus behaves as a prolate rotor to a region where the spin is produced by the alignment of all or most of the available valence nucleons along the symmetry axis of a weakly deformed oblate shape. The level scheme was established at high spin using up to four-fold gamma -ray coincidences detected in the Eurogam spectrometer following the reaction 114Cd( 48Ca,5n)157Er at a bombarding energy of 210 MeV. Particularly favoured states have been established at IK=69/2+, 81/2+, 71/2+, 77/2-, 87-/2 and 89-/2. Specific single-particle configurations are assigned to these special states by comparison with cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. These states are related to structures observed in the neighbouring nuclei 158Er and 157Ho. These data provide the spectrum of single-particle states for the lowest lying valence orbitals above the 146Gd closed core.

    • Excited states have been identified for the first time in very neutron deficient Pt-171.172 nuclei using the recoil-or-decay tagging technique. The ground-state band in Pt-172 has been established up to I-pi = 8+. A similar level sequence, presumably built on the I-pi = 13/2(+) state, is observed for Pt-171. The data are compared with theoretical calculations based on the mean field approach and the random phase approximation and are put into the context of the systematics of platinum isotopes.     • Excited states have been observed for the first time in (XPt)-X-168 and Pt-170 using the alpha-decay recoil-tagging technique. The trend of decreasing deformation moving away from the N = 104 mid-shell continues far Pt-170 but the structure of Pt-168 is significantly different.     • InAs(001)-c(8x2), InSb(001)-c(8x2), and several reconstructions of GaAs(001) are exposed at room temperature to iodine molecules (I-2). Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and synchrotron soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (SXPS) are employed to study the surfaces as a function of I-2 dose and sample anneal. In the exposure range studied, GaAs and InAs become saturated with I-2, resulting in removal of the clean surface reconstruction and the formation of a very strong 1x1 LEED pattern. Iodine bonds primarily to the dominant elemental species present on the clean surface, whether it is a group-III or -V element. The InSb(001)-c(8x2) reconstruction is also removed by I-2 adsorption, and a strong 1x1 LEED pattern is formed. SXPS data, in conjunction with scanning tunneling microscopy images, however, reveal that InSb(001)-c(8x2) does not saturate at room temperature, but is instead etched with a preferential loss of In. Heating the iodine-covered group-III-rich InAs(001)-c(8x2) and InSb(001)-c(8x2) surfaces causes removal of the iodine overlayer and transformation to a group-V-rich reconstruction. When the iodine-covered As-rich GaAs(001)-c(2x8) surface is heated to remove iodine, however, the c(2x8) reconstruction is simply regenerated.
